RoninGarden 2013 Glog

Welcome to another season of RoninGarden,

In this episode...

2013 is here, and a new season is upon us.

This season I got a good head start on the summer outdoor season. I've started a few new strains for 2013 as well as carrying over a few from 2012.

Currently the kids are residing in my closet, within a makeshift grow room.
All are in Airpots varying in size from 1/2 liter for the new sprouts, to 1.5 gallon for the 2012 survivors.
Lighting is a dual bulb t8 fixture running 6500k lamps.
My growing medium is Promix Bx.

Here's the lineup for 2013:

2012 survivors in closet grow area:
7 Pot Douglah
7 Pot Red Brain Strain
Yellow Bhut Jolokia (thanks Taxing)
Giant Bhut Jolokia
Trinidad Scorpion
Butch T Trinidad Scorpion #2
Butch T Trinidad Scorpion #3

All peppers will receive nutrients via General Hydroponics General Organics series.
IMG_9047_zps664cb36a.jpg

I used these nutes in 2012 with great results, so I'm sticking with what has worked for me...

Having recently moved, my summer growing space has been reduced by half compared to what I had in 2012.
None the less, I'm planning on moving all peppers outside once summer rolls around so they can enjoy the wonderful Colorado sun..
At this point, the plan is to move them into root pruning pouches approximately 5-7 gallons in size.
We'll see how that all goes...
2012 was a great learning experience, can't wait to see what 2013 throws at me...

Thanks for stopping by!

Until the next update.....

Welcome to another edition of RoninGarden,

Awesome grow list/setup once again. Can't wait to see how 2013 shapes up for ya, man. General Organics all the way!
Thanks for the follow! We'll see how it goes with the G.O.

Very nice!
Thanks Stefan!

Plants are looking picture perfect.
Thanks Mill!

The weather is wonderful today. Got out and put a few miles on the bike before the snow hits.
At this time of year we have these beautiful sunny days in the 60's.
Only drawback is the beautiful days are generally followed by a dump of snow or cold spell.
No complaints from me...
On to the garden....

Today I'll highlight my new 2013 kids..

Let's start with #1: Thanks to Mtbrider17 for the pods that the seed came from.

I wanted to post photos of each newbee because a good half of them will be getting the upgrade from the 1/2 liter airpots into 1.5 gallon airpots in the next few days.
Everybody got fed and watered today, so once they dry out a bit I'll perform the transplant.

The new homes.

You aren't kidding about the wicked trunk on the douglah!

I'm planning on using some myco this year for the first time, and the results you are getting make me think I'm making the right move.

+1 mycorrhizae! Used it last year for the first time with
my plant-out and pot-ups. I think it made a difference,
but unscientifically, I had no control!

Your plants are looking great R!

Stefan,
The small bag of myco in the above pic is a 100 gram pkg and goes for $2.50US.
Adding myco can be done on the cheap.
Here's a close-up on the douglah trunk.
I say trunk cuz it's like a tree...

Thanks Paul!
I'm a fan of the myco. As well, it's all unscientific... but the root balls my peppers produced last season tells me they must have had a good growing environment.
Even with the Promix already innoculated with myco, i'm gonna add a bit when I pot up next.

On my last grow shop tour, I got some free samples.
Here is one that I find interesting.

It's full of the good stuff roots like..
We'll see how this stuff works out..

I've never seen the stump tea before, I'm interested to see how it works out.

Thanks for all of the info on myco! Do you usually just add when the seedling is ready to go into a four inch (or whatever) pot? Do you give another hit when it goes out to the garden?

Wow looking great ... way to grow bro!! Extremely healthy looking plants!!
Thanks for stopping by Trippa!
Trying to keep it as organic as possible.

Up until now, I've been using PromixBx which has myco in it already...
So I usually just potted up and sprayed the mix with some seaweed water solution (to feed the myco).
When I do my next pot-up i'll be spreading the myco granules on a plate and then roll the rootball to coat it. Then pot-up.
I'll post pics once I do it..
And yes, I'll probably do it everytime I move to a larger container.

Just to add to the mix; I used Earthjuice Rainbow Mix with
Mycos and Hummic Acid. When I transplant to Party Cups
and when I pot up, I just sprinkle a little bit in the bottom of
the hole and sprinke some on the sides of the rootball after
I set it in the hole.

I'm actually familiar with the earthjuice. Just haven't ever used it.
That's why I really enjoy the Glogs. Hitting info back and forth..

With all this talk of myco... the hamster wheel started turning...

I've read where some folks use the myco granules during the seedling stage. i.e mixing it in with seed starter mix
But since I use Rapid Rooters, I decided to see if it would increase root growth right from the getgo...
A bit of a spin on the usual method..

I decided to add some granules to the hole in a few rapid rooters.

After filing the hole to the top.. I jammed all the granules down with a chopstick.
9DE0DE80-CEDB-4959-A8B9-CE8FA822FB68-940-000003660F10C276.jpg

After that I place the seed in and pushed it down as well.

Soaked in tap water.
Then it's off to the wifi in the glad container.

In doing this I want to see if there really is more explosive growth of the roots when paired with the myco.
This is the same process (minus the myco) that I use to sprout all my other seeds.
The seeds I'm using are strains that I have already sprouted using the same method, so I have germination timeframe to gauge against as well.
We'll see how this turns out..

Your experiment will definitely be one to watch. Are you keeping some water under the rapid rooters, or just letting them do their thing without touching them? I am findind mine are drying a bit (not completely), which I did not expect, and so I've added water a couple of times to make sure they stay moist. It is my first time trying them and I was not really expecting this.

I think you're onto something CR... I used Espoma "Garden Tone" organic fertilizer with mycorhizae last year and I got similar results... chile stems better than thumb thick and very woody looking. When I pulled the dead plants up after the hard frost the root balls went out for a couple of feet in every direction.

Thanks Stefan.
I like the RR's because they are very similiar to a sponge. I like to squeeze them while submerging them under water and then releasing the grip to allow the rooter to absorb water. Then I squeeze the excess out from top to bottom. I usually leave the lower half a bit more saturated. Doing this I usualy have to add water every three days or so.. I should also mention that I keep them in a glad container on the wifi and the container generally stays sealed. I try to open it once a day for air circulation. I really like the ability to adjust the saturation factor with just a squeeze.

I'm loving the germination experiments everyone is doing these days.

This is a bit more of a root experiment but I am curious to see if they germinate any faster.
I'm a firm believer in the Rapid Rooter. Once I made the jump from jiffy pods to the RR's my germination rates exploded.

Cool experiment, Ronin. I'll be very interested to see if the mycos improves the germination rate.

Thanks Doc! Me too.

That's great to hear. So far, the use of myco seems to be very positive.
Once again it appears that happy roots make a happy plant.
May your grow go just as well this year!

And while on the root topic,
Last night while giving the kids their weekly shower (foliar spray, water no nutes)
I was inspecting everyone and saw just what I wanted to see.
Roots.
9A3681FD-1F3B-4DE3-B197-F314CFC5FC16-940-000003FD7F5C884B.jpg

This is a great sign as I am planning on potting them up in the near future.
I like to use the root exposure as a gauge for upgrade time.

Thanks for stopping by!

Until the next update....

Loving the experiments . Keep that one updated !! Seems that all our mychozzoria products here are way over priced ... I used to use them but haven't found any decent sources that are affordable ... not that I have been looking too hard

Loving the experiments . Keep that one updated !!

Will do!

On that note...
There's nothing new regarding the Rapid Rooters with myco. They're still in the glad container on the wifi.
I've added water to them once so far and they also get opened once a day for fresh air circulation.

I did however upgrade the housing for a few peppers from 1/2 liter airpots to 1.5 gallon airpots.
#'s 1,2,4,5,9 and 12 got the upgrade.
Here's a few pics of the process..

Without 1/2 liter housing.

I also sprayed and then rolled the sides in the mycos granules as well.
I did this for all the transplants.

Happy campers in their new housing:

Next on the plan for the garden will be upgrading the remaining 4 peppers in 1/2 liters up to 1.5 gallon airpots.
The newest sprouts (#'s 15,16,17 and 18) will be making their way to the root booster bubbler contraption shortly as well.
Well, that's all for now....

Thanks for stopping by!

Until the next update....

Very nice! Thank you for the close up picture of the myco applied, because I'm using the stuff for the first time this year and the visual really helps.
