(Link Added 5/7/25)
Here's my TikTok video updates for my Glog

I plan on restarting small. I ordered Chocolate Reaper seeds from Matt's Peppers (ETA Tuesday 2/14) and will be using my patio to grow the plants. I measured it out, and with the 5-gallon Home Depot buckets from my previous venture, I should have space for 24 on the balcony, using drip irrigators and a fertilizer injector.

I'll be sure to post up pics soon when I begin the seeding process.

Update 2/14/2025: Here's the first pics. Thanks to Matt's Peppers for the quick delivery and the freebies included in the package. I'll be starting my grow this year with Chocolate Reapers.

Official count is now 80 seedlings! 've been doing daily update videos and posting them to TikTok:

My TikTok Videos

I also got something in writing from the HOA telling me that there's no limit to the number of plants I can have on my balcony, I just need to make sure they're in planters. They did mention I have to hand-water them, but I'll still put a main line for drip irrigators, and make it so that it's reasonably well hidden from view, along with the fertilizer injector and timer. I measured it out, and with the 7-gallon planters (already bought ten of them), I'll be able to comfortably put 22 plants out there.

I'll also be heading to Home Depot in the next couple of weeks before planting any of the new seedlings and get some wood cut to length so I can put them at the bottom of each section of railing & seal each section with clear putty. That way I can still keep the water from draining off the front of my balcony & walkway and onto the bushes off to the side. My neighbor who's on the HOA board liked that idea in particular, since there's no way anyone can see the wood unless they're on one of the balconies clear across the street, climbing up a ladder or flying a drone. It's also doubtful anyone will see the irrigation line since it's the same color as the planters, and it'll be hidden between the two rows I'll be setting up.

Quick update:

I've topped off at 85 seedlings, and the vast majority have one or two true leaves coming out. I've also taken them out of their domes with the 12 on/12 off LED's and put them right by the sliding glass door to my side balcony where they can get at least an hour or so of direct sunlight before I take them outside. Between the building next door and the awning, the side balcony only gets a couple hours of direct sun, otherwise it's pretty sheltered from direct sun for most of the day.

Right now, the outside temperatures where I'm at are in the upper 80's to low 90's for highs and around 75-76 for low's. So far my plants have been inside with my AC set to 75, so I'm wondering when the best time will be to take the seedlings outside to harden them before putting them in the planters.

You have to go from cool to hot so I would put them outside with plenty shade for a short period.
You don't have to wait on soil temps to plant them out however the suns heat can burn them easily now.
Do you know about Surround WP?

Can't say I've heard of Surround WP.

As for shade, there's a portion of my front balcony, despite being south-facing that gets shade full-time. I can also set up my lawn chairs that have mesh seating to provide further makeshift shading, placing one tray under each chair. I'm guessing I should put the trays out when it's still relatively cool out.

That's a legit little army of seedlings! Maybe when they're a bit bigger you could start by putting them out overnight and then bringing them in before it gets too warm in the morning, giving supplemental light throughout the day. Just a thought.

Thanks man! That sounds good. I just put them out on the side balcony and I'll bring them in around 8-9AM or so before it gets too hot...

Well, this sucks. I just got a letter today from my HOA. They told me that the plants in my Home Depot buckets constitute balcony clutter, and I have 7 days to remove it. I also have to take down the tarp.

They said I have to replace them with formal planters. Thing is, I'd like to replace them and figure out how to also prevent the water from spilling over the front of my balcony, but at this point, I'll have to postpone things indefinitely until I can get some planters that won't leak all over the place, but still not cause root rot.

Edit/Update: I checked on Home Depot's website, and they have a 16-pack of 10-gallon planters for $155, which I can try to get in a couple of weeks, provided I'm not on the receiving end of any more "surprises" in the next month or two. Between those, and the soil I plan on getting (don't wanna re-use the soil I have already as I don't want to risk cross contamination with any bacteria that may have started up), I should be good to go.

Plus with the new seedlings I started recently, I should be good, despite the recent setbacks...
F - HOA's. That is why we moved outside that BS. I hope you have better luck with those A-holes soon

Don't give up. You are on your way to becoming one of us ("one of us" he chants). :) You can have amazing success in buckets - this is the only way I grow my superhots. I have on average of 40 on deck in buckets. I will say, several things to keep in mind... never enough fertilizer as those buckets will drain in the rain/watering like none other... however, I've been able to get 6+foot Superhot plants on my deck that produce until Dec. Keep it up. Where there is a dream - there is protection and production :)

Yeah, HOA's can suck sometimes. I've been in a couple that were pretty cool, and the one I'm in now is alright (except for the thing with the Home Depot buckets), even if it's expensive. They cover the insurance for the building exteriors, which seriously lowers my homeowner's insurance premiums

I've been following CanDog's suggestion and putting my trays out in the evenings and leaving them out overnight on my side balcony. The last couple of days, I've been putting them out a bit earlier to harden them even further.

The game plan is to continue to put them out overnight earlier every few days until I feel comfortable putting them out all day. By then, I should have all the planters filled with soil, ready to go and get the irrigation set up.
