Sawyer's 2013 Glog - Last Harvest/First Sauce

I haven't done a grow log before, but thought I'd give it a try this year. I'm growing mostly super hots, so I feel like I'm already behind schedule. Anyone know where January went? No pictures yet, I'll add some later when things (hopefully) start popping.

My setup is a basic home-made 2-tier 1" PVC plant stand. Each tier can accommodate 4 standard 1020 nursery flats and has three 2-bulb T-12 4' 40W fluorescent shop lights suspended above. The bulbs are a mix of Daylight, Wide Spectrum, and Power Twist. (I can't give you a K rating on these off the top of my head.) I use heater mats to try to keep the flats in the comfort zone for germination. They are wired to a dimmer switch so I can adjust the current. Even with the dimmer switch, in the past I've had trouble keeping uniform temperature, so this year I've put a layer of aluminum foil on top of the mats to spread out the heat and a layer of kraft paper on top of that. The flats go directly on the kraft paper. If anyone has any tips or tricks for controlling the temperature of heater mats (without purchasing an expensive thermostat), I'd love to hear about it.

I use standard 1020 nursery trays with 1206 (72-cell) inserts. I filled the inserts to planting depth with Sushine Mix #1 and planted anywhere from 2 (new) to 4 (old) seeds per cell. I then topped off the trays with some peat-based germination mix. I intended to use Fafard 3b germination mix, but didn't want to open a new bag for only four flats. I had a small bag of Miracle Grow and one of Ferry Morse left over from days past so I used one of those, I forget which.

The germination stand is in a back room in the warmest part of the house. As plants geminate and become established they'll be moved, either in whole flats, or potted out separately, to a 3-tier, 5 flat/tier stand in front of a bright picture window on the south side of the house. No lights on that yet and may not need them since the window gets direct sun for several hours per day. I'll be starting a lot of other seeds besides hot peppers, so I can't just leave them on the heater mats 'til plant out.

I started four flats today, one whole flat of self-propagated, pure-strain red Bhut Jolokia and up to 12 cells each of the following (note - I prefer the term 7 Pot to 7pod, but am keeping the 7pod nomenclature here out of deference to the vendor):

Awesome pulls there Buzz! You're gonna have enough to absorb most of your free time there. Have you been making any sauces or powders with them to preserve your harvest for the winter? Cheers guy!

Nice poddage there!

Hopefully the weather will behave itself.
Thanks, Scott.  It got down to the low 40s last night, instead of the upper 30s that had been predicted earlier in the week.  It's heading to around 60 for a high today.  Back to low 40s tonight but then highs and lows both are supposed to move up again, highs in the 70s and lows in the 50s for the next couple of weeks.  I really hope that prediction holds, because I should start pulling in some massive harvests soon if it does.

Some of the potted yellow bhuts and douglahs are wilted today, but I think it's from excessive water.  It rained at least 4" here yesterday, maybe more; my rain gauge tops out at 4".  I likely won't have to water the in-grounds again this year.  I had just fed some of the potted plants, but I guess all that is feeding the grass now.

ahhh tooo much pod porn;... nice photos.. nice upskirts..
Thanks, DeNNiZ.  The MoAs have some of the most dense podding I've seen on a plant.  I guess that makes sense, since I'm sure that's something the MoA selected for.  I peeked again today and saw at least one of those pods starting to show some color.  :woohoo:

Some really freaky looking pods there
Yes it is, Wally.  I'm really looking forward to some of those freaky pods ripening.

Thanks, Rick.  I'm planning on being pepper obsessed for the next couple of weeks (well, even more so than usual).  So far, all I've done is dry (deseeded) pods and sell a few to a local grocer.  I'll make powders and experiment with extraction on the dried stuff this winter.  I should have my kitchen usable again today or tomorrow and then I'll start making purees.  Again, just to get the peppers preserved and then try some sauces later on.  I think I'll try at least some ferment, maybe just straight peppers.  Still thinking about that one.

I'll do a partial pull here in a little while to take in to a couple of bar owners I know who are into infusions.  I may not have any pictures for awhile.  The battery on my camera is about dead and I can't seem to find the charger.  It's around here somewhere.

You've got some awesome pods there, Sawyer!  Prety hefty
pulls of some great varieties.  Your Giant White seems to have
more habanero shaped pods than mine - I never have thought
it looked like a hab.  Great color in your pepper patch!

Well, I'm way overdue for an update, so here's a start.  I dodged a bullet with a light frost Thursday morning.  The potted plants are located between the house and highway, both sources of heat, and are somewhat sheltered by trees, so they all escaped unscathed.  The plants in the garden are more exposed and I got some patchy damage out there.  I think it may work in my favor, though, because it killed back some flowering tops.  So not only will the plants not be putting effort into top growth and flowering, it opened them up to allow sunshine down into the interiors where there are lots of green pods.  Although it can change in a moment, there are no more freezing temperatures predicted for at least the next 12 days.  I'll be getting the biggest harvests of the season over the next few days.

Here's the 5-day forecast for the coming week:

Here are some reaper pods I pulled a few days ago:
jg0dpv.jpg

I commented on this over in the reaper thread, but I'll say again, I don't think this one will make the list for next year.  The plants did get a late start, but didn't play catch-up as well as some of the other late starters.  They don't seem to be as vigorous nor as prolific as I would like.  I have one primo plant (of four) that is just loaded up with larger pods that are just starting to turn.  I think I'll propagate it instead.  One of the reaper plants is pumping out funky pods and I'll definitely propagate that one, so I guess the net change to the grow list is zero.

Two of the AlmaPaprika pods finally ripened:

There are a dozen more out there that may have time to ripen.

I'll post lots more pictures over the next few days.

Sawyer.....cool shots of the Reaper...........I may have said this before, but although the Reeps and Preems look similar, I'm sticking with the Primos next season. Better producers and tastier flesh...well at least that how they grew in my grow areas.

Arksaw! Did you get the "bread'n butter" jals pickled? Plain ole pickled is fine but on the Earlies, if making cuke pickles . . .

I forget who sent me Reapers to try but compared to Yellow Primos . . . but then I like any yellow. Jonah's not bad, Red primo, either but I think am gonna stay away from the Reaper as two different sources . . . tasted bitter or metallic or something not as pleasant as some other reds. Red naga's avatar because I kind of like it . . . for a red super. Love the look of the encapsulated bud as pod! Other pods making fun of it: "I was special. I am special." :snooty:

White bhuts are awesome! Seeing yours, inspired me to write--"grow a bunch, plant out a bunch" on 2014 sheet, as maybe not stable yet. And some serious heat in those 7P Browns, man! Happy Halloween!

Thanks for stopping in Jamison, Scott, Redtail.  I'm having a pretty decent wrap-up for my season.  Some of the in-grounds have lost their leaves as a result of the light frost the other day, but a lot more didn't.  For the ones that did, a lot of the existing pods are going ahead and ripening.  The potted plants are still unscathed by frost, but I'm starting to have some nutrition and too much rain problems with them.

Thanks, Greg.  I'm keeping a close eye on my one Primo plant that is doing well.  The pods on it are huge, relatively speaking, and I saw some color on some of them this afternoon.  Got my fingers crossed for getting some seed out of them.

The reapers aren't making the cut for me for next year either, but that is a great shot of them.   Glad you escaped the frost for a bit.
Thanks, Ben.  I'm starting to sense a pattern here regarding the reapers.

Hey, Annie!  Thanks for stopping by.  Not yet on the jals; I shopped around a bit and ordered a mandoline from Amazon and some calcium chloride and citrate for preserving, pH lowering, and firming (without increasing sodium).  As soon as that all gets here, I'll be a pepper slicing machine.  I looked today and have a nice mix of greens and reds.

I still don't think my white bhuts look very "bhuty", but they are very consistent.  Out of... oh, maybe a dozen or 15 plants, all but two look pretty much the same.  The two "nots" both look the same and are an interesting pepper in their own right, like really fat, stubby, yellow-orange bhuts.  I'll post some pictures of them soon.  If you want some white bhut seeds, I'm sure we can work out a swap.   Yeah, the browns are hot.

I had a very special pull today:
4via2b.jpg

Four Funky Reapers in the upper left, two Jigsaws to the right, and the rest are all MoAs.  For those, I double-checked the plants and they really are all MoAs.  The darker ones are from a potted plant and the pods get more light than the others, which are from an in-ground.  Haven't tasted them yet.

A close-up of the MoAs here.
A close-up of the Jigsaws here.
A close-up of the Funky Reapers here.

PS - I also picked two or three gallons of Fatalii, 7 Peach, and 7 Burgundy.

Glad to see that your scoring nice pulls, your season started off a bit rough with weather, having to travel etc.

But those pepper plants still kicked in and filled your buckets.
