Scorched 2015 Grow

Hello everyone (if anyone is even reading  :) ). I know I've started this a little late but I finally decided to get around to it. This is my very first year starting from seed and my first year with such a large grow. Over the past 15 years or so I've always ordered seedlings from CCN or gotten them from a nursery and only ever around 40 plants at the most. It was always jalapenos or habaneros until the Red Savina came along. I actually did grow 10 of those from seed when they were released. A few years later the ghost chile made its debut and things have just exploded since then. That was when I went from growing maybe a dozen plants to 30 or 40 each year. Have No complaints with CCN and always had a great experience and great plants that always grew true. While researching some plant issues last year I found this place and was hooked. Never knew so many varieties existed! CCN has a nice selection of super hots but when I started reading this forum I was just stunned at what was out there. So I decided this year I would grow from seed since I would be able to try all the varieties I wanted to try this way. Started buying sfrbs of pods and saving the seed, buying seed from awesome vendors (going to have an entire section just for Judy's varieties), seed trains and trading.

My setup is simple. Just t8 lights with 6500k bulbs and two shelving units. I had planned on using t5s at first but didn't realize the cost and since I needed so many lights just wasn't going to happen. I figure I'll replace a few lights per year with t5s. The t8s are doing a great job so I can't complain. I'll be growing in containers, and a couple of raised beds that I will soon be putting together. I'll probably have a few in the ground as well, we'll see how it goes once plant out gets here.

Unfortunately pics in the glog won't be anything great. I'm using a shitty old Dell Studio laptop that has issues when I try to hook a digital camera up to it. So I'll be using my Ipod touch to upload pics since it connects to the laptop with no probs. Enough with the rambling. Here's my grow list:

I think that's just about everything. A few plants are unlisted and will remain that way. Thank you to those of you who were awesome enough to share seeds with me. Really excited about this year's grow. Thanks for reading!

Everything is looking awesome Tony! Let me know when nobody will be home for a day and I'll stop by to help take some plants off your hands.  :shh:

Thanks. I'm happy with the way things are going. Big difference compared to past years where 40 is the most plants ever grown. By the end of the season I'll probably be looking for people to take pods off my hands lol. I have a feeling I'll be having many giveaways.

I will be trying to sell some pods at the house as well as on FB and maybe here. The size of this years grow is a test to see if it's worthwhile to continue to grow this big. As long as I make a profit it'll be worth it. I'd love to get to the point where I can clear the the small field behind the house and plant it full of peppers. I could grow a ton of plants here just costs money to do it lol. I just love growing hot peppers. I've got it bad and every time I see a new variety, color or cross on THP or FB I HAVE to have it. Don't get it most of the time but I can still dream lol.

I just realized that I will have an entire section just for Judy's varieties. Probably the new 23'x5'x13" raised bed. Hope there's enough room. I'll post pics of the beds once I fill em with soil. Being delivered next week. 7 cubic yards of 60% screened topsoil 40% compost and pine bark fines from Blue Hen Organics. I'll add bat shit, neptune's harvest crab shell, azomite or greensand and some other things. The piece of ground plants are going directly into is getting disked and then having 4 or 5 cubic yards of mushroom compost disked in. They sell it right across the street which is nice

Thats a big jump 40 to 400.  Can't wait to see it all.  Did some math tonight and figured I will have about 155 in the ground and maybe 20 more in containers, not even half of what you have.  If they grow well you will have more pods than you probably have time to deal with, I know I almost did last year with 110 plants.   Good luck.

Things are going good for the most part. Seem to be having some over fert issues with the new Dyna Gro Grow formula. Wa trying the feeding at every watering technique and only using 1/8th of a tsp/gallon which is about 1/4 strength. Other than that all's good. Soil for the beds is being delivered this week. Can't wait for plant out. These babies are out of room under the lights.

Some more random grow pics.

So of course I can't stop adding to my damn grow. Saw another Jim Duffy FB bare root plug sale that I had to have. Arrived today. Like the last one they're in a bit of rough shape from the coast to coast journey but not too bad. The last one I ordered is starting to look good and drop the damaged leaves so I'm sure these will do the same. Jim was awesome enough to toss in 4 freebies. The new Jay Weaver white bhut jolokia and Doux des Landes which I believe is a sweet pepper.

Included:
(2) Bhutlah x BBG7   This is what made me place the order. Love BBG in any form
(2) Sunrise Scorpion
(2) Bahamian Goat   Now I have 5 or 6. Can never have enough goats
(2) White Bhut Jolokia Weaver strain
(2) Big Mustard Momma
(2) Doux des Landes

John Ford from Ford's Fiery Foods had a big 50% off sale on seeds and a few lucky customers had the chance to win some of John's Chocolate Brain Strain Hybrid seeds. Opened my order and I'll be damned if I wasn't one of the lucky ones. Hot damn! Will probably start these this year and overwinter to get a jump on next year. Might even get a pod or two if I'm lucky.

Included:
Kraken

Brazilian Ghost   I got some Brazilian Ghost Red Pheno from Chris Phillips so wanted the brown version. This is still unstable but hopefully will come out brown

Carolina Reaper x Brazilian Ghost  Sounds interesting

Aji Banana

Bhut Jolokia Assam

Ordered Chile de Agua but was sold out so John replaced with Kunja

Marked off a 32' x 32' area today for the in ground garden. Now just waiting for the family friend across the street to disk it for me. Once disked I'll add mushroom compost to the soil. The family friend sells it right across the street and has a front end loader so that's pretty awesome. My grandfather used to use this piece of land (mine is a smaller piece of the whole) for a big vegetable garden. It hasn't been used for that in twenty years or so. Hell at one point my uncle made a circle go kart/four wheeler track on it lol. For the past fifteen years it's just been field grass/weeds dying and growing back over and over again. Bought some of those cheap soil test kits at Walmart just to see what they say. Will be covering the entire area with 20 year weed barrier from greenhousemegastore and might at some point put down wood mulch (they sell that across the street too) to extend the life since not using mulch does shorten it. It comes lined every 12" so that will really help keep my rows straight. I figure I'll put plants 1' apart with 2' or 3' wide rows. Hoping the close planting will help during storms as well as helping to keep each other cool in the hottest parts of the summer.

I've noticed while doing a bit of digging in this piece of ground that there's a lot of grubs in the dirt. This concerns me that they'll be chewing on my roots. I've read conflicting info saying these grubs are done eating and just waiting to turn into Japanese beetles and other info saying they'll eat up my plant roots. I was going to spray but would rather not use poison. I've decided to get some nematodes from buglogical to deal with these. Has anyone dealt with this issue before and/or used nematodes?

My 7 cubic yards of 60% screened topsoil 40% compost/pine bark fines from Blue Hen Organics comes tomorrow. The front end loader across the street will really come in handy for getting this into the 20' x 5' raised bed. I'll add amendments once it's in. The ground in the beds has been tilled and broken up and has had weed barrier in it for the past two weeks to keep new weeds/grass from growing as well as killing off old weeds. I was planning on keeping weed barrier in the bottom but was reading bottomless beds allow the plants to really dig down into the soil. I'll post pics of all of this once it's done. Right now it's just a spray painted piece of ground and two empty wooden "boxes". Later in the summer I'll be putting shade cloth (30% block) over the 20' x 5' bed to see if it makes a difference in plant size/fruit set. My plants will get full sun all day long so just want to see if the shade cloth helps or doesn't make a difference in the later summer months. I need to get some anyway to harden off all my plants. Can't be carrying 32 trays of solo cups in and out of the house each day. Especially in the beginning when they'll only be in the sun for no more than an hour.

Almost forgot that I'm growing 5 tomato plants as well as some other things. For tomatoes I've got Vinson Watts, Dancing with Smurfs, Paul Robeson, Danko, and Indian Stripe. I've also have four Charentais melon which is a small musk melon from France that is supposed to be the sweetest and four Mouse Melon (also called Mexican sour gherkin) which are tiny little fruits similar to cucumber. They look like tiny watermelons

Thanks for reading and sorry no pics but will have some more soon.

1 foot apart is close.  If you do that I would do the 3ft between rows if space allows.  Last year I did 1 and 3/4 foot apart and same for rows.  By September it was one big entity.  We had a wet year and found the mosquitoes loved it under the canopy.  Had to drench myself in bug spray or wear long clothing to do picking much of the time.  This year I went 2 foot apart and 1 and 3/4' for the rows, but leave a row empty every 3 so theres a few 3 and a half foot gaps in my 9 rows.  I have always saw grubs while digging also, never worried about them, haven't seemed to be a bother yet.  My biggest worry with the grubs is that moles will invade, have mole problems every year in some part of the yard.

I haven't seen mole activity yet this year. Some years we have em and some years not so much. I went around to all the old tunnels with a pitchfork and didn't hit anything and nothing moved so will have to keep my eye out.

I know some people here do the 1' between plants thing and have success so figured I'd try it. We get some bad summer storms here and I'm just not going to buy over 400 stakes and stake each plant up so my hope is they grow into each other some and support each other during the storms. We don't have mosquitos really that bad where I'm at since no woods around. Hopefully it stays that way lol

I'll keep an eye on how yours does.  1' would give me a hell of a lot more peppers.  Might be manageable if I did 2 or 3 rows with close spacing then left a 3 or 4 foot walking row. I didn't have so much problem with storms as I did with giant plants and the pods were just pulling them over last year.  A lot of the plants were 4 - 5+ feet and once a lot of pods set up high didn't take much to make them want to start leaning one way or another.  Your lucky with the mosquitoes.  Back corner of my property touches the woods that are all to my left about 500+ acres then lakes and farmland west of that.  During drought years, bugs not bad.  Last year was very wet and relatively cool.  Couldn't hardly go outside without getting bit by something, but in the peppers it was just horrible.

Wow.. Amazing looking plants.. Wonderful grow list...  You really have some amazing blends, crosses and strains... Can't wait to see your pods this season !!!
