!!!!!!

You know...
Somebody in here had an idea that I've been ruminatin on.
If we had 8 TD's a year that were a "standard", and 4 wild card months, that would actually be cool.
Basically, every quarter would be 2 'given' TDs and one wild card.
I sometimes resent having to come up with something on the fly Friday afternoon, with something I've never heard of (African).
If I knew that "Thai" was coming up next June, it would give me a chance to experiment with the flavors and techniques.
It could also be fun to think "ohhhh that TB won Tacos last year, I have to come up with something to top that".

The Wild Card months could be spontaneous, rare, specific, broad, eggs, or whatever boss decides.

Which brings me to another point... Boss wouldn't have to be "on it" every month to come up with a new and different idea.
Eventually, with the current TD "deciding" format, we will run out of themes and have to repeat more and more.

Example:
January: Soup
February: Italian
March: Wild Card
April: German
May: Beef
June: Wild Card
July: Burgers
August: Mexican
What comes after August.... Oh yeah,
September: Wild Card
October: Queso
November: Pizza
December: Wild Card

Just spitballin here...

I actually prefer not knowing until the TD is almost upon us, and I prefer when they're what you would consider "left field" (such as African.) I'm sure sentiments are split on that subject, though. I like the extra motivation to try something totally different for me - to get to experiment with things I've never tried before, or just to come up with an idea I've never had before. For example, even though I really enjoy a variety of Asian food, I've never really cooked it on my own before. It was too easy when living in Houston or L.A., or visiting Chicago, Atlanta, etc., just to go out to a restaurant and get it. But since the Asian TD, I've been trying more Asian or Asian-style stuff on my own. You know, even if I don't get a crown, I get to try some really awesome food!

And of course, I enjoy a good competition. Sure, there have been a couple TD's when I've entered something "just" to enter something, but most of the time I try to come up with stuff I hope will at least get some kudos, if not a crown. Not knowing until shortly before the TD is to begin kind of ups the ante, if you will. Not only is the question of can we come up with something fantabulous, but can we come up with it quickly? To me that competition is the essence of the TD's - otherwise you might as well just take your time and post on any other food-related thread. Nothing is wrong with that, of course, but it's not a competition as the TD's were intended to be.

I totally get your sentiment G, but spontaniousness in EVERY SINGLE THROW DOWN?
There's got to be a "Golden Middle" somewhere.

(I am really just playing Devils advocate now, please don't think I'm starting any s**t.
I like THP just the way it is, and I am not trying to change anything about it,
I was just suggesting an "idea")

Xoxo G!

Yeah, part of that probably comes from the artist in me. GO AHEAD - give me a blank canvas/ sheet of paper/ sheet of metal/ slab of wood/ hunk of clay, and dare me to come up with something for it. Sure, sometimes I stare and blink at it for a while, but that's ok because creativity is often a process. But the process doesn't need to take 12 months - if something doesn't jump out at me in a day or two, usually a week max does the trick. And THP's more often than not given us at least a week, knowing that some peeps don't have a gozillion grocery stores around them like I do. So like I said, I'm cool with the way it is - just an FYI!

I always knew we would eventually do the same ones over and over there is no stopping that, and we all want to do them, like burgers, pizza, etc. So for 2013 maybe I will work something out. Like an alternating schedule. It may be just the right time as it's getting harder to decide. BUT right now focus on Sept.

I like what Scovie had to say. We've disscussed this topic together, but I think we have not explored everything yet. So, I'm more in favor of nailing one TD down per quarter and letting the other two be discussed. We've done German in October several times now, and I love it. I think that month is pinned. Maybe March should be pinned as Irish. May could be pinned as Cinco de Mayo (Mex or Tex-mex). July... burgers? That gets a month from each quarter, and I think it's something that we could all work with.

I still hold Gee's perspective though. I really like the TD's where it's decided at the last second and then it's go time. That's when the true creativity comes out, and I love seeing it.

Just my thoughts... discuss.

Dedicating a coupe of TD's to nationalities doesn't mean you can't still make it randomly specific at the last second ...

October could be known to be German up front, but at the last second it could come down to schnitzle vs something else ...

I haven't done a TD yet, but I'm probably going to wait for October ... September maybe outdoor time in pacific northwest, but it most def is not on the SW Gulf coast ... those SoFlo Bro's have that Atlantic sea breeze, alas, we do not ...

 it's been between 97 and 106 for 6 weeks straight here in Twisp.

and you want to camp, camp? ... like tents camping? ... or like cabin out in the sticks camping w/ bathrooms and beds? ... I've only been to Seattle/BC once before, so I'm not famliar w/ the climate ... are there mosquitos and 100% humidity w/ this heat? ... because if so, I can't be camping by choice in that shit ...

Grant.... :violin:

Sorry, dude. I grew up in Houston and have still spent more than half of my life there - it's hot, it's humid, and if there's a breeze it's just a hot, humid breeze. But we still did stuff outdoors most of the summer. Plenty of parks and even campgrounds have grills in areas with trees or even semi-shelters, and lots o' peeps have covers on their patios, or just throw up a canopy/gazebo for some shade. Yeah, it's still hot, but get yer drank on, cook up a storm, then take a shower!

Outdoors ... that's mostly walking to my car between time spent in A/C ... Otherwise it's enough just to check my peppers plants and of course the dedicated exercise ... anything toshorten the time ... partially, because to spend much time means a lot of sun block ... and I hate that shit tbh ... my skin, in particular, hates that shit ...

LOL, Seriously, here on the East side of the Cascades, it's dry 10-25%.
where we will be camping on the wet side... sorry... WEST side. It's much cooler like maybe 85.
It's much more humid over there tho, and the campground is on the river, The Green River, yes THEE Green River.
