Spicegeist 2016 (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

Yes, I said I was going to scale back to maybe even nothing.  But, this is just not going to happen.  I love peppers, love growing them, watching other people grow them, developing new crosses, eating them, talking about them, and yes, I even enjoy some drama from time to time ;)

Hi Charles! Are your Chimayos still producing for you? How do you like the taste of the powder from them?

Hey Rick, you know, they are, but I've moved them off to the side, so they're somewhat neglected.  I just didn't think they lived up to the hype.  I don't think anything really compares to bhut flakes and powder.

Speaking of Bhut and Naga types...

Here are some true Dorset Nagas:

I'll make some flakes out of these to contrast with my bhut flakes.  Last year I just mixed them all together, but they definitely have a different flavor.

That is the CGN 17020.  I've got to come up with a catchier name for it though
Very nice!
This should be the same as this one:

Regarding Dorset Naga (ive real deal seeds from the folks who originally selected the variety) how do they compare to regular bhuts for plant vigor, and flavor/heat? They're distinct enough from Naga Morich?

Well, it's true that when you get used to a certain heat level, nothing else will do. Anything less seems kinda flat. That's why I'm making powder blends these days. I get a more well-rounded flavor and heat that presses all the buttons. ;)

That's true, there is the heat level.  I just love that unique bhut tangy flavor...

Yep, looks like that's what it is.  I believe that I originally received CGN 17020 from PepperLover.  My original Dorset Naga seed was from cmpman1974, and I do recall him saying he also got his from the originators, Sea Spring Seeds: http://www.seaspringseeds.co.uk/shop/chilli-seed/superhot-chillies

Dorset Naga is definitely different from Naga Morich, but then again we'd need to be real clear about which Naga Morich we're talking about.  There's really a lot of diversity out there.  The Dorset Naga is very hot, firm, not very bumpy, glossier than bhuts, and not as pronounced a bhut-flavor as standard bhuts and Naga Morich.

Thanks for the info. Dorset seems fairly consistent in shape/size, it reminds me Judy's Bih. I will give a try in the next season.
I've seen a lot of diversity in Naga Morich as well, it's now sold by a lot of commercial companies.
Every time i find a pack i grab it to see the outcome, i will show you the one i'm growing this year when i get the first ripe pod... yes, i'm still so far behind but the climate is incredibly hot for September :)
It's nice to dig the nuances but the good thing about all this crazy bih/bhut/naga variations is they rarely deceive in terms of heat/flavor!
When you get used to bhut powder/flakes, mild stuff loses appeal indeed. Hottest annuums and frutescens are the only exception to me; i do love pequins/tepins and piri-piri types, some indian and thai are nice as well. All the milder stuff i occasionally grow got grinded with supers for taming and enriching the flavor.

Gorgeous Naga porn, Charles!  :P

Charles, here's a nice one if you don't mind.
Naga Morich x Tabasco, my seeds come from Grant (JR). I believe you were his original source!
It's been refined/selected for many seasons by JR (actually an F6):

It's taking ages to turn color LOL, i'll be back when i finally sample it!

Thanks Gary!  You should try this one sometime... different from a bhut, I bet it'd be very productive in your climate.

I would love to grow that one, Charles...Believe it or not, I've never grown a straight landrace Naga before...

Wow, that's great.  Thanks for sharing Datil!  I did send that cross over to Australia a few years ago... it could be a descendant of one of mine, but I think there were also others playing around with similar crosses.  Either way, very cool to see such a fun cross a few generations later!

Gary - they do look kind of similar... maybe all peppers eventually converge into one?

Capsicum convergent evolution...Makes sense to me! If that be the case, we are way ahead of the game here!

Awesome work, Charles!  Your red BJs are to die for.  One of my chocolate BJ
plants reverted to red, and I got a couple of 3"+ pods from the plant.  They look
very similar to yours - wide, and nicely tapered and lumpy, but maybe a tad shorter.
I may just have to grow them again next year, although I have considered not
growing any more BJ. The pods just looked too good.

Congrats on a great season, a job well done!

Thanks Paul.  Brown reverting to Red sounds like a good one.  I'd love to share seed of my red bhuts... I've just been so busy with my other "real" life things I haven't been able to get my seed sharing routine very organized.  I need to get a better system down for doing that...
