stc3248, 2013 Grow log, Season's Greetings and Season's End

Well here we go again! Those that saw my grow last year know that I was plagued by virus issues and many other problems, but I was still able to pull off the most amazing grow of my life. By season's end every plant was infected. Some keeled over, but others just kept right on trucking. I learned a ton, and hope to use it to pull off a season without that virus making a repeat appearance. It will be tough. I had huge numbers of pods, and many hit the ground and rotted, so there are sure to be some infected volunteers that show up. My grow this year will be MUCH smaller and focused on the varieties I liked best along with a couple new ones I really wanna try out.

First a couple of my money shots from last year...

I plan to use a similar grow setup to start with...here are a couple pics of how it looked...
P1000224.jpg

P1000226.jpg

My setup evolved as the season began. I started with a single t8 shoplight...the two shoplights and ended up with a single row of CFL's down the center hooked into a 4' power strip the the two shoplights angled in from the sides. The light from the sides really seemed to promote growth at the lower nodes...so for this year...
IMG_0650.jpg

I bought some more CFL's Mix of 100w and 75w equivalents. The 100w eq were around $10 for 4 at HD and the 75w were $3 for 6 at COSTCO!!! Also bought some splitters for the sockets and here's what the power strip looks like now...
IMG_0655.jpg

This thing feels like its giving you a sunburn from 6' away...I alternated 100/75 on each side all the way down...Instead of the mylar I am going with foil sided foam sheathing...
IMG_0660.jpg

My "plan" with this stuff is to make the Shelf unit more of a grow tent type setup. Hoping I can use the lights and a small space heater to maintain a constant temp in the mid 80s. I am also going to "try" to use magnetic tape to attach this stuff so access will be easy. We shall see. May get too warm...but easy enough to vent if need be. I am going to try to keep them indoors much longer this year. I put them out to early last year, and some of the late starts that stayed inside until the night time temps were higher passed many of my early starts that were already in the ground.

My final dilemma is the wife says 20 plants...and I have all these awesome seeds! So I am going to see if the wife's # is sort of like the over the counter dosage...the full prescription strength is double, so I am aiming for 40. I will start almost twice that # though so if you're near SD be watching this glog around plant out, I will be getting rid of some plants...

Well here is the list for now...If something you sent didn't make it I still have them, and will get to them some day. Momma is already pissed!

[background=rgb(255, 244, 228)]Numbers in red are changes since last germ update. Still a bunch of no-shows, but I think I am going to have a good week. I'm already seeing action on the seeds I planted last weekend so hopefully a few more days cooking and I will be in business on many of the no-show varieties. I am also seeing some new action on the original seeds, so hopefully more of them will pop as well. I want to note I had mis-credited several varieties. The Cumari, PI438638 and Yellow Billy Boy were actually sent to me by Jamie (Romy6) I have corrected them in the original planting list as well.[/background]

[background=rgb(255, 244, 228)]Here are a few more pics of what I got going on out there...Little brother big brother theme today.[/background]
IMG_0983.jpg

This TSMB[background=rgb(255, 244, 228)](Bakers Peppers) [/background]has a very thickened stem...and reminds me of a tiny palm tree...

IMG_0976.jpg

Here is big brother TSMB [background=rgb(255, 244, 228)](Bakers Peppers)[/background]...this plant is really starting to make a move! Really pleased with the setup so far.

IMG_0982.jpg

Little and big brother's same photo. Another of Jamie's Mystery Annuums decided to hook up after transplant. This one will get moved to its own pot like the extra Aji did in yesterday's post...

IMG_0981.jpg

Here is the little Goat's Weed that could. You see the dead material near the node? that is what both cotys looked like when it sprouted! Thought it was a goner, but nobody told this little dude! lol...love these plants.

IMG_0978.jpg

Here is big brother Goat's Weed...l mentioned before that these are from different seed stock than last year's, so they may turn out slightly different. I like what I'm seeing so far though!

IMG_0979.jpg

Here is another crazy one...this little PI438638(Romy6) had all of one and 3/4 of the other coty amputated in an unfortunate seed helmet surgery and it still decided to put out some true leaves!!! Will be slow for a bit, but once it gets a couple real deal leaves out there he'll catch up...

IMG_0980.jpg

This is the little PI438638's (Romy6) big brother...a little droopy from a long night under the hot lights, but the lights kicked off shortly after this pic was taken and he got a drink...fastest vertical grower, and may be a good candidate for some cloning soon!

Non alert...don't continue if you hate all things non pepper.
IMG_0967.jpg

A couple brownies I let sit out too long after baking... :high: ...wait no these are peat pellets with some chia-like snapdragons sprouting. I divided 18 pellets that looked like this into 50 peat pots.

IMG_0965.jpg

One of the Pomegranate sprouts...but look at the blurry label to the Southwest...yeah buddy got him some good neighbors!

IMG_0930.jpg

Here is a pic of the tater pot I showed yesterday before planting...could make your own easy enough. Just a pot with windows inside a pot without. It was only $10 and came with the planting medium and seed potatoes so I went with it. My son should have some fun with this one this season.

That's all for now folks. Hope to have a big week in the germ trays...think I will. See you all next weekend! I may not make it home mid week, so probably no updates 'till Saturday....or maybe this afternoon.
Shane

Awesome grow setup and results brah! Hopefully Mama's happier with your grow now that you have some bedding pants started for her as well. Cheers
I sure hope so Rick..they're taking up valuable real estate on the grow shelves!

I've got a 7 Primo that lost 90% of it's cotyledons due to a surgical mistake too, hope it does as good as your little PI438638 did.

Good luck with your grow Shane.

Looking like its going gangbusters over there Shane!!

With the pomegranates do you simply save the seeds from a ripe pomegranate and dry them and place them in soil?? Or do you need to do something else to them or buy specific seeds??

Lookin stellar buddy! Them things are really taking off! Got it going on out west!
Thanks Jamison! Still a ways to go, but I am satisfied so far!

Mos' def... Love the little bro/big bro shots!
Thanks Rick, didn't have it in mind until I noticed all my pics kinda followed that theme on their own.

Nice Shane! Liking the little bro, big bro theme. Funny how things worked out. Hope you get more of your varieties to get started!
Thanks Griff, like I said they worked it out for me...didn't even notice 'till I started posting the pics. I hope more pop too, there are some I really want to grow out...HP22, Brain, Monster Infinity, Ultra Pube, Giant Twisted Chocolate Hab...not to mention the Pequin Chiapas you sent me last year. More will sprout...but I already have more plants than I intend to keep so I'll be alright!

Best of luck with your little one Patrick...I was lucky with the two I had come back. Fingers crossed for you buddy!

looking GOOD
Thanks Tyler!

I grabbed that pomegranate from a plant growing in the roadside while out taking pics. The seeds were cleaned then planted...not even dried. I dried and saved some more of the seeds for potential future projects. A couple of the ones that came up will go in the ground and a couple will be grown in containers for bonsai. I read starting from harvested seeds works fine, but a couple years before production.

Night all!
Shane

Great camera shots. The germ rates are right on par. Give it some time and the percentages will go up. I almost gave up on a tray of seeds that was one of the first planted. They are all popping up a few at a time each day. I,ve got some Goats Weeds coming up to the first set of trues. Me and my magnifying glass.......I 'm checking them out for looking for that fuzzy appearence every day..........
Keep cool dude!

Chewi, last year was my first year growing them and I will ALWAYS have a plant or two now. They have a flavor/texture similar to a cayenne, but less sweet and more heat. VERT hot for an annuum. Huge plant with tons of pods, and the plant is stunning to look at. The leaves are light greyish green fuzzy the pods start green, then black and finally to bright red. Great for flakes (roasted or lightly smoked), fine powder or sauce. Never tried them in salsa??? Their only minor draw back is they are very seedy, but the seeds are small, and I don't mind seeds in my flakes. The seeds I used this year are from a different source so the plants may be a bit different. Some plants grow more upright, some sprawl, some have upright pods and some pendant. I hope the plants are similar to the ones from last year...

Thanks for the feedback! Going to get me some for sure now. Sounds like a winner!

Just another amazing grow Shane. I think this one may hit 100,000 views if you keep up the stellar updates. Really glad to see you have decided to keep the mystery annuum going too. Let me know if you need anymore seeds ;) Yeah the wife wouldn't like me for that :P

Potato pot, Shane, your not working on the secret Yellow 7 X Idaho Russett project are you?

:)

So secret, it grows underground. ;)

EDIT: Just noticed the germ rates and pics above. Nice shots and the seeds are starting to pop! Glad to see at least one BP is up. Come on, HP22B...and more BP's!

Shane you guys and all your indoor gear grow some amazing stuff and it grows so rapidly … totally impressive mon!!! They look very healthy and great pics too :)

Shhhhh....I'm going underground. I could tell you guys about it, but I'd have to kill you!
You weren't supposed to tell anyone :0

Great, I always screw that up...now can all of you send me your home addresses?

Side note:
On this day in 1996 I kissed my wife and 2 month old daughter goodby and boarded a plane for Chicago in route to Recruit Training Center, Great Lakes, IL. Hard to believe its been 17 years!

And this is post #3000 for me too!!! Weird how that worked out!

Ant what a long strange trip it's been... Good on ya for sticking with it Shane.
