STC3248, Just Another Grow Log! Holiday Harvest!

Still waiting on the supers...but the rest are sprouted and under lights. This will be my first attempt at supers. Fingers crossed. I am so lost in the labels. I don't know how some of you keep them all straight??? My 10 year old is responsible for the artwork on the cups!

Movin right along! I gave up those Orange Bhuts-my original hopes were they would be similar to the peach. Good to see the Primos popped for you.
As to Monster Infinity, reg....I got them from Superhot, same with the Primo's.

I am wondering about the graft...maybe better to wait until a few true leaves...???Hell ,I'm jus wondering- the only ones I did involved notching an older plant/ using a new growth tip vs young sprout.....
but you have me considering serious "Franken thoughts".........

23 potted up...and another 30 something in the ground baby!!! Photos of some of the in grounds on page 12. Nothing left in the greenhouse. A little nervous...we're past last frost date, and even the record lows are above frost temps for the most part from here on out. There are a couple temps in those records that are a little scary, but I'm going for it! I have some C9 christmas light strands that I am going to lay out in the garden hooked to my thermocell just in case, and I will cover as many as I can if a frost warning comes in. I also gave a few away today. I miss them already. There are still 40-50 more inside under the lights that aren't quite done cooking. Plus now that momma has seen that I actually have the room for them, I get to start some big jim seeds!!! putting them on to soak tonight.(I might "accidentally plant a couple Aji Amarillo's to shhhhhh :shh: )
P1000409.jpg

Here they are in their new shoes! Everything is out of the greenhouse. More importantly I may be the only person to EVER dog ear a digital photo!!!

P1000410.jpg

Wasn't a big fan of the topsy turvy for pepper or tomatoes last year. I am letting my son try them with his beans. the ones planted on top are climbers and the sided and underneath are bush varieties...

P1000411.jpg

Caught an earwig in the act of doing the hard part for me this morning. He cut the stem on the approach graft. :tear: I had the roots of this little guy still in its peat pellet duct taped to the plant and was planning on leaving it until I was certain the union had been made...sink or swim now! Still looks OK. Hopefully the lanternapeno will pull through!

P1000412.jpg

Here's a wider view...the true leaves have grown since the graft was made. I pulled all the buds/small pods off the Jalapeno host and I am keeping it in the dark for now, I should have a better idea tomorrow if its going to make it. :mope:

That's it for now. I'm tossing back a few well earned Shiners! I think I will try to take a video tomorrow of my whole setup, hard to capture it all in stills.

Thanks for looking folks!
Shane

So what is the cure for earwigs... My thinking is if there are enough of them outside, to find their way inside, then I've got a problem...

My first inclination is to buy a bunch sevin, and dust the entirety of my property, and then till it in at least two inches...

Turns out that putting 2 inches of dry peat at the top of my container was a good start to battling the dermapteras (or whatever it is that I have).

The dryness will discourage anything that might want to make its home there. Of course, that doesn't mean I don't already have ~50 eggs in the potting soil...

So what I'm considering is removing the plant from the milk jug, rinsing clean the roots, re-potting in a new container, and dumping the old potting soil into the canal (or a fire, or if I can find a spare nuclear weapon in orbit...).

The thing that puzzles me Shane, is that whatever it was came out in broad daylight... I had just been looking at it a few minutes prior to check it and see if it needed watering... I had also tested a few tupperware containers to see if they would be sufficient for isolating the peat pod from the rest of the soil (to let the roots dry). I went into the other room - grabbed my camera to show what I was doing, and in that short amount of time, the coty had been nearly eaten off...

I did see a gnat in there... Squished it.

also we need a better name than one arrived at by using the portmanteau method... Raging Inferno Chili - fast like an annuum hot like a paper lantern.... I dunno... Just don't settle for lanternapeno too quickly :) its not a bad name, but it doesn't stand out, and doesn't have much marketing potential...

As far as the name I was just messing around... and having to worry about that's a long way off. I gotta hope the graft sticks now, which is a long shot.
My earwig was out in the light this morning. If it is earwigs I think there is a bait for them/slugs available. As far as the gnats go, don't trash your soil. Buy some mosquito dunks and put them in your water can and water with it a couple times and it should take care of your gnat problem for the most part. Don't think you can ever completely get rid of them, but whenever they start to flare up just apply another dunk. I have noticed that they don't like peat heavy soil, so you are on the right track there. I wouldn't use Sevin...it's a great product but doesn't hit aphids. Stick with the bait. I am starting to get some friendlies in the garden, so I am done using pesticides. I might buy some ladybugs if some don't show up soon and release them around the yard. One of the main reasons I went ahead with plant out was that it was a losing battle with the aphids in the 70-80 degree around the clock greenhouse. I know the night time temps will slow the growth a little, but maybe it will also slow the aphids a bit while mother nature starts to supply my anti aphid army. I had hundreds of ladybugs around the yard last year. Hope they show up soon!

Shane

by the way...I left all my young ones on the pool table while I was potting a few up this evening, and the cat got to them Grrrrrrr! She only hit the nicest ones too. Just a few leaves, but they were so purdy.... :mope:

Fortunately I have not had any trouble with aphids this year (yet). My parents have a cat thats always getting into trouble... I used to threaten her with going for a ride in the kitty chipper.

true... this is my 4th graft attempt... Its also the second one that looked like it was going to work...

Hopefully it takes though. Hopefully the pods that grow out are the best of the annuum and chinense world, and hopefully you get a contract to grow out 1000 of them for exclusive sale through some big seed company at some exorbitant (Read that as enough money to retire off) rate.

*chuckle* or at least give everyone on the forum something unique to grow out. the Jalapeno Shane Strain.

Or Shane's Hotness.

Here are a few I havn't shown before...
P1000415.jpg

Goccia D'Oro

P1000413.jpg

Fish Pepper...

P1000416.jpg

Devil's Tongue Brown...the pics color doesn't do this guy justice. Floro's are tricky.

P1000417.jpg

This is one of the ones that has me worried...Scotch Bonnet I got out of the seed train that looks very Annuum...ish. Thoughts?

Long day today...night all.
zzzzzzzz

Shane Strain....Hmmmm

Most cameras have a setting to adjust the white balance for flouro lights...

It took me a bit to figure that out, but once I did, I erased all the unuploaded pictures I'd taken, and took them over again...

Looked a lot better.

shhhhhh :shh: ........lol- hahaha-The wife would give "THE LOOK" if she knew I had some soaking out here for a boat gro!!!!
Shane Strain..... :rofl:and you can call the Franken bush Shane Strange

Beer-

Congrats on getting a bunch planted out Shane! Goccia D'Oro looks like it will make a real nice pickling pepper. I have some jamaican scotch bonnet plants growing this year from isolated seed. Mine are growing really short and are have large, dense foliage. I'll take a picture of my plant later and post a couple pics in my glog from the plant I grew last year.

"A gov't big enough to give you everything you need, is big enough to take everything you have."

fantastic quote my friend... I find my self quite libertarian leaning... Not enough to be in the anarchist camp, but enough to be critical of the republican party. Not that I'm a proponent of that other party either... But I digress...

Boat grow? Down here, its not as uncommon as you would think to see a half buried boat in someones front yard being used as a planter... I dont understand it, but whatever floats (or fills?) peoples boat I guess.

Its says your video is private. Oh you got me buddy.
Should be fixed now....

yup...I hate 'em!
P1000420.jpg

Moved this hibiscus from the North side of the house where it wasn't getting enough sun to a better spot, and look who I found hanging around! I gave it a bath in some Bug b Gone...should be good as new in no time.

On a better note...I was talking to the wife yesterday, now that she's almost convinced that my plants are going to fit in the garden and when I mentioned I only had one Anaheim left she was a little upset...I had 3 from last year, but killed 2 trying to transplant them out of a Topsy Turvy planter (bad idea, don't do it!) I mentioned I had some seeds to a much better green chili (Big Jim baby!!!) but since she told me no more I hadn't planted them...While she was still thinking about it this happened.
P1000428.jpg

If you look real close you might notice 4 regular sized Big Jim seeds...and 2 that are more the size of say....an Aji Amarillo. Shhhh its the perfect crime! She has no idea what all I have planted so far! So, she'll never know! If they both pop...one might be an addition to the Fatalii/Yellow Bhut graft I got going if it takes. I got my fingers crossed...Picture this 1 plant...3 different yellow peppers which to the untrained eye will appear to be the same pepper...I pull myself an Aji, 1 friend a Fatalii and the other a Yellow Bhut. I watch one friend sweat and curse as the other rolls on the ground screaming for milk...all the while I have that its hot but come on you big babies look on my face :hell: ...I would never do that... :halo:

So who wants to come over for a BBQ in about 3 months?

Both grafts still kicking...and looking a little better today

Thanks for looking!
Shane

Jsschrstrcks..."But I digress..." this we allow, but not without a PM, BUT ABSOLUTELY NO "TORTING"
Shane- I can't believe you posted those little M/F's :flamethrower:  , I got the dreaded message today, 7 of the babies are infested those little monsters, and so are my overwinters.Scared the crap outta me when I saw that pic!hehe-but not really. My cousin did some transplanting, and will return tomorrow so chemical warfare.Fingers crossed....and remember they are attracted to the color yellow.

When you mulch, you might try pine "straw"-needles-wood is not good, but everyone wants to sell us wood chips-it stays put pretty well once it mats down, and doesn't use up n2 /acidify the soil as doesn't break down rapidly....and it can even be free  !
Thanks for sharing(except for that damn APHID ORGY!!!)
Dave.
PS-That Devil's Tongue Brown is lookin great, I hate how they look under flouros-great stems all around.

I only use those wood chunks where I don't want anything to grow, but I want it to look nice. I put them in the bottom of the greenhouse for insulation only and along the edge of my bed to help keep the grass from creeping in and to protect the plastic when I use the weedeater. I won't put in around my plants don't worry...

I couldn't help but post that pic, them and the slugs are putting up a fight, but I am slowly getting the upper hand.
Hope you get yours under control!
Shane
