STC3248, Just Another Grow Log! Holiday Harvest!

Still waiting on the supers...but the rest are sprouted and under lights. This will be my first attempt at supers. Fingers crossed. I am so lost in the labels. I don't know how some of you keep them all straight??? I've heard it said that what happens in Florida, stays in Florida... lol

Also I'm not sure if I mentioned it, but my: Pi1441654 has sprouted, and is sending out a root! Should see the hook above ground soon. Can't wait!!!

C. Praternissum for the win!

Yeah...until it has 50000 hits on youtube! Anyway just got done tucking them all in under sheets...forecast says 42 tonight but I'm not taking any chances. The greenhouse got reconstructed and all my 1 and 5 gallon containers went back in there with the heater on. Highs will be back up to mid 70's in a few days. Strange winter when folks in Chicago are hitting 80 and San Diego barely gets out of the 40's today?!?!?! More worried about the 3 days straight rain than the temps...I sure am glad I went down a couple feet on the plants in the ground and mixed in compost. Most of them are in raised beds, so the drainage should be good...I hope!

It's been 30+ years since we've had these March temps...........back then the closest 'greenery around was the algae at the beach...........ha

The set up looks great Shane hopefully your plants in the ground survived the nasty rain, but those pods are looking great I am waiting for my cayenne thick and holy mole to ripen hating the waiting process. Good luck with tonights rain and can not wait to see the next update.

Will snap a few pics of the Greenhouse plants in a bit...for now here are a few of the non peppers showing off...

Picked these guys up at the farmers market yesterday for momma and arranged them for her.

Picked up the Black Rose(back center) and the two outboard in the front row at the farmers market yesterday as well.

Got a lot going on around here...I could take a different bloom/plant pic every day and it would take the better part of the rest of the year to get them all in...

We got some unexpected sunshine today after a night and morning full of wind and hail! Still a bit cool, but not as bad as predicted...some snaps of the outdoor grow in a bit...hope everyone enjoyed a festive yet safe St Patty's day!

Shane

Finally getting to update on the outdoor grow...I ended up putting the makeshift greenhouse back together due to the unexpected cold snap. This week its been unseasonably cold here, and the plants are rebelling a little. The in ground plants are getting a little bit of leaf curl, but looking pretty healthy overall. I will keep the greenhouse up and running for a few more weeks I guess. I am planning to continue plant out next weekend with the rest of the plants going into 5 gallon containers getting potted up and the rest of the annuums that are ready being put in the ground.

Here are my weekly outdoor pics...
P1000514.jpg

Red 7 Pot one of the plants with some leaf curl and some slug damage. It hasn't really slowed it down. it has grown 3 or 4 inches since being potted up.

P1000515.jpg

My favorite fatalii! Aside from a little slug/aphid damage this dude is really looking fantastic!

P1000516.jpg

Yellow Bhut...

P1000517.jpg

Purple Bhut...just a little leaf curl on this guy, but since planting it out the leaves are starting to color up a little again.

P1000519.jpg

My largest cayenne pod...I have about 15 pods total that I should really pull, just can't bring myself to do it! They are all mature enough that I would still get some pretty good flavor from them, so I may bite the bullet and pull them this evening.

P1000520.jpg

The Mucho Nachos don't seem to mind the cool temps at all. They are blooming like crazy and setting pods left and right. This pod is already over 2" and getting bigger each day.

P1000521.jpg

Piquin about to set its first pod on the right. I pulled the bloom on the left. The only annuum with any leaf curl issues, but still doing well.

P1000522.jpg

The first goat's weed pod is almost done cooking. Jet black all the way around. 1 more pod on this plant and hundreds of small buds popping up.

I really hope the rain is done! We may get some more next weekend, and it will take at least that long for things to dry out around here. I am already noticing a few of the plants with a little yellowing. Good news it a warming trend is on the way. Night time temps are going to start slowly climbing into the 50's and daytime temps will be in the 70-80 degree range starting tuesday. Trying to talk the wife into the farmers market thing later this Summer, going to start looking at the requirements for produce certification. Really don't need any extra cash...but it would be nice to be able to at least offset the cost of growing these. We shall see. Gotta get to a harvest first! Average highs this time of year should be in the mid 70's, but we have had highs in the 50-60 degree range for almost a week! I have a 4 day weekend ahead...so look out for massive updates! hope the ones next weekend are more positive!

Thanks for checking out my glog folks!

A board me is a terrible thing...rainy day=sink or swim lanternapeno graft...

P1000524.jpg

Cut the roots loose (there was only a tiny bit of root left anyway), created a small flap to tuck in the cut end...and

P1000525.jpg

Threw a wire tie on it, put it in a cool dark garage. Lets see what happens?

I am the most impatient person alive! I think I am also the only person to ever kill a pet rock so these (this) poor little plant(s) didn't stand a chance!

Place your bets folks...sink or swim?
Shane

I say swim. But funny thing is since it has been raining here, I also got bored and my girl let me experiment with a cutting from her plumeria to try and start it in a new pot. Just got done doing that lol. Also multiple stops at nurseries and hydro shops.

Shane hey just took a few mins and skimmed a few pages of your Glog good stuff. I loved the greenhouse fatal that looked like a different plant once outside amazing. Looks like you got your hands full lol. What is the benefit of grafting? I don't know too much about it. But it looks like something I might try lol .. I'm a tinkerer lol.

There's a slim chance that you can get a genetic mutation at the graft site. If so the seeds of the hbrid pods will grow true right away without any stabilization. I placed the grafts in locations where I think I might be able to generate new growth to see if I can create a cross. That is a slim chance though, and the main reason is just to have a plant with multiple peppers on the same plant. Would be cool for example once I figure this stuff out to have all bhut colors on one plant,,,or all the different habs. Or tepins/pequins/and other small peppers all on one bush. There was a thread asking if it was possible, so I decided to try to find out!

I had the least confidence in this particular graft...I didn't think I cut deeply enough on either host or scion. I really should have waited longer, but like I said I was bored! So far so good, no wilt yet. The other times I have attempted to separate them they wilted pretty quickly. I am going to leave it in the garage for a few days to see if it takes.

Have you had any prior success at this ?
I think this is both of our first year grafting peppers... Shane has grafted roses before though IIRC.
Thanks for the interest Robin!
I have grafted roses and fruit trees in the past...first time attempting peppers and first time using an approach graft. All my other grafts have been either splice grafts or whip grafts. I intend to try a splice graft with pepper plants once I have a successful graft under my belt as proof it can be done. In hindsight I should have done an annuum to annuum graft first then maybe tried the annuum/chinense graft. There is probably a higher likelihood of success with similar species. I should have also been more patient and waited 'till next weekend when I could be home to tend to it...I have to work a full day tomorrow. I will leave the house at 4:30 am and won't be home until some time after 6 pm. So if it starts to go wrong I wont be here to try to save it...sometimes I am not so smart. :banghead:

I learned about the approach graft from Ken (jsschrstrcks) and also about the potential of a rouge hybrid offshoot from the graft site. Maybe he can reshare the article from which he got that idea...The great thing about the approach graft is that the scion still has a root system to support itself during the healing process. Most grafts start and finish with the part I did today. You just cut them and tape them and put them in a dark spot or cover them with shade cloth and see what happens! In fruit trees you really don't want any growth below the graft because the plants chosen for rootstock typically don't have appealing fruit but they have great roots and the trees with the best fruits don't always have good root systems so the graft is used to join a strong root system with an appealing fruit. Same with roses typically but sometimes they are also grafted just to get multiple colors on one plant...sort of like what I am attempting now with peppers.
Sorry for the book...a little excited. I think it just might work!

No wilting yet!!! Fingers crossed! Pics tomorrow dead or alive.
Shane

I love sink or swim time!!!! the next 48 hours requires quit a few updates i think. Sucks about the weather. hope it turns around soon. We had two weeks of awesome weather (for here) and now looks like two or three days of rain and cold. Hoping to get a turn around tomorrow. And i never go and look at my plants after there light goes off for the night..... Because that signals my bed time cause i got no more reason to stay awake :)

Lots of updates it is! Here it is this morning...still kicking. A tiny bit of bull horn upward curl, but looking pretty good! Still freaking raining here! Supposed to stop today. Here are a couple pics.

P1000526.jpg

That is the peat pellet that the scion's roots were using at the bottom of the pic.
P1000527.jpg

Hopefully momma will remember to mist this little guy a few times today for me.

Now the real test. About 14 hours without daddy here to take care of him! I put him to bed inside a cool dark cabinet.
