STC3248, Just Another Grow Log! Holiday Harvest!

Still waiting on the supers...but the rest are sprouted and under lights. This will be my first attempt at supers. Fingers crossed. I am so lost in the labels. My 10 year old is responsible for the artwork on the cups!

Finally broke down and hired about a thousand hit men...or ladies rather. I released a few hundred in the little greenhouse and 5 or 6 inside. Still have tons of reinforcements in the fridge!

P1000626.jpg

Here they are checking out their new home...

P1000627.jpg

Ummm...yeah. You guys get your mind out of the gutter! I was just showing them patrolling near my Red Bhut buds! I am certain that the aphid up there on the new growth was discovered and destroyed!

P1000628.jpg

Think this is a Yellow 7, All the terrible looking growth is mainly due to the aphid infestation.

P1000629.jpg

Here is one patrolling on the grow shelf...

P1000630.jpg

...and another, but look very closely and you'll see.
P1000630-1.jpg

Predator and prey...See the tiny aphid to the left of the ladybug's near side front foot. I almost got the pic with the aphid getting munched, she dropped it while I was trying to focus. She picked it back up and ran off with it.

These dudes are ferocious! I sat and watched them destroy aphid after aphid....and smiled the whole time! Pass the popcorn, the show is on!

Lastly here is a teaser of a new pet rock of mine...started taking time lapse photos last night so here is the first 24 hours or so of pics taken at 1 minute intervals...I dunno the exact speed I set them to .15 seconds on moviemaker then recorded that to video at 32x speed so its pretty quick! Funny the night time shots with nothing but the led flashlight on them are better than the washed out photos with the floros blazing.
going to try to keep this going for an entire week and speed it up such that it plays through in 1 song....

Thanks for looking!
Shane

That Time lapse will be awesome if you can keep it going! Awesome soldiers you got hanging out there! Looks like you have visited a plague upon your plague! But how did the aphids get at your indoor plants?

When I had all my soil issues, once I transplanted them all into better soil I pulled some of the worst ones back inside during their recovery, and pulled the aphids in with them. I thought I was pretty thorough with my inspection too, but that was before I even knew I had aphids out there...live and learn. They are under control on the indoor plants, and I've been keeping them beat back outside too, but no matter how many times I carefully sprayed each leaf on every plant top and bottom they show up again, so I figured I would try a more permanent solution.

The time lapse is kind of running itself. I just download the photos twice a day should be really cool once done.

I'm like thinkin'.....shifty glances left and right...we could get us some 'snuff" footage goin' ...be good for morale.

and on another note....box received; female intercept as follows 'I just thought it was more of your stupid (WTF!?)pepper stuff :scared: '....well no honey, my buddy Shane damn fell near off the tepui's bringin' that back, and to get it through customs...um hey you might wanna wash that off. ...-of course its for you...I mean, DUH!?right? HELL Yeah-I knew it would look really cool in your big glazed teal colored pot when gets big  !

Man, Shane, every time I pull in for a pit stop, you have a new twist. The time lapse is so way cool!

"That is the one that is still a question mark too...the coty's are curlying and drying out, but he true leaves are still looking ok...ish."

Just a later thought: Is it possible the cotys are feeding the plant?

Really liked the Ladybird Beetle photos, too. Having them in the greenhouse is great; kind of keeps them caged in until their work is done! Be cool to see photos of the ant lions when they hatch out.

Hey, bro - weekend coming!

The time lapse is cool as hell. Ladies in action even cooler. I had to sit tight and hold my pee to get this pic. Kind of blurry but you can see the aphid.

Not sure exactly what kind this is. Not your typical ladybug

Wow Shane, that time lapse reminds me of a 1950's sci fi flick.................
My dad was a Pro MP cameraman and I remember going through the ropes learning how to use the "Mitchell's and Bolex's" I did alot of time lapse and other camera forte back in the 70's. Standard in film is 24 frames a second, time lapse was about 1 shutter frame per second. It took for ever to do a 10 min short film but great results with the best equipment. Keep up the "cool" videos
The lady bugs are great!...I haven't needed to use them but I know where to by when in need.. One of my sisters has the Asian lady bugs in here grow room. They came in from outside and have multiplied. No plant pests in her place but these tend to bite her when shes sleeping..............
If I needed something for soil problems , say fungal gnats I would buy "nematodes" They literally clean out the soil.....but there's a cost to those and there not cheap!
Once again your update is outstanding! I don't know where you find the time for everthing.....and then we have this site...................lol
I'll be checking out the next update.....4 sure!

Greg

That Time lapse was awesome! My phone has a setting to do that...I wonder if I can try it out this weekend  ...it really highlights how amazing that cfl set up looks.

And the lady bug army is nothing short of miraculous! The only way I was finally able to fight off the aphids this winter was to enlist about 300 of the little warriors to hit up the buffet. My only other recommendation would be duct tape. For what ever reason, the aphids really went for the tape I used to seal up my bug cage that my plants were in. I probably have more on the tape than the lady bugs got. Though they could have just been trying to make a get away from the mini army....

Keep up the good work with the grow and the pics! I always love coming in here to snoop out some pepper porn! :P

Nice army and the time lapse is very cool. Plants look great!
Thanks man! Most of the army moved out when I opened the GH today, but there are still a few in there patrolling and I am sure the others are doing good work around the yard...

That is cool shit Shane! Love me some lady friends.

Jamie

Me too! I am putting out some houses for them before I set the rest of them loose. At $7 per container its cheaper than buying pesticides...So if their #s get low I will just buy a couple more boxes of them.

Those ladys are ferocious for sure, I love watchin them, I think the larvae might even be more fierce...
I sat and watched the ones I released on my indoor shelves and they were going nuts! 1 aphid after another they wouldn't even bother finishing the ones they were munching before grabbing another!

"Snuff" footage huh? Maybe you're talking about dying aphids...or maybe not!
Glad you got it! How did it look? Did it come through ok? They grow pretty quick...probably quicker with your warm nights. As far as customs goes, tell her the smell is only temporary. Hope you guys enjoy it!

Could be...but one of the true leaves is curling a bit to, and the growth has halted. I started giving it some light today anyway to see if it wants to keep kicking...

As mentioned above...I have to open it up during the day, so some leave, but there are still a few in there, hopefully laying some eggs for their killer larvae!

Hey, bro - weekend coming!
Not quick enough! I am underway tomorrow ughhh...

Great Pic Pr0d! That is a pretty Lady! Even more beautiful with her mouthful!

Geez! Maybe she should feed them! That's just nuts! Never heard of them biting people! New to this whole time lapse thing myself. Wish my go pro could do a better job of adjusting for the lighting. I may leave the CFL's off for one of the days and hopefully you can see what is happening better. Watching the video you can see that toward the end of the day the plants start to droop even though they have plenty of H2O...wonder if I should cut down the light cycle to that point??? Operator error has quite big gaps in my footage. Didn't take any pics while I was at work today...oh well, should make for a drastic jump in the final product.

Give it a shot! Only problem with duct tape is a couple of the lady bugs got snagged in it today to...

Night all!

Interesting observation, Shane, I notice my branching annuums and baccatums start bending over about 15 hours into the light cycle. Not wilted, just bent over, and the stems are stiff, and the leaves hydrated. So I went to a 17/7 cycle. I noticed tonight the plants went into the bent posture at about the same time, but only two hours left of light not three. I'm wondering if a reduction to a 15/9 schedule might be a good idea. It might be closer to the light they encounter in the greenhouse as well.

Light cycle gets talked about a lot here. Ever look at your plants in the morning after they get some rest from the light?. Mine look like someone snuck Viagra in their feed water. Two days ago I came home from work and my plants were droopy and I chalked it up to them needing water.....which they did. Next day I go to turn lights back on and they have their typical "morning wood" I come home from work and they are droopy after 14 hours of light. My guess is strength of light has a lot to do with it. I also notice stuff that contradicts what people on here say.... I notice that the younger plants with smaller leaves handle it better than the bigger plants... Bigger leaves have more area and lose more moisture? Smaller plants are further from the lights? *shrugs* Not quite sure but I noticed it outside in full sun 80° day also.

Sounds familar, Especially outdoors in the morning plants would be praying to the early morning sun but by late afternoon theyd appear to be wilted looking. Once the early evening shade would start to appear one by one, the plants would perk up. At that point, if neede d I'd give them a drink of water. I like to hydrate the plants in the morming before work. Only later if the evening temps stay above 80ish, otherwise the cooler evenings keep the container soil cool.
