STC3248, Just Another Grow Log! Holiday Harvest!

Still waiting on the supers...but the rest are sprouted and under lights. This will be my first attempt at supers. Fingers crossed. I am so lost in the labels. I don't know how some of you keep them all straight??? My 10 year old is responsible for the artwork on the cups!

+1 on the frankenpepper. I think I read something a while back about how the CPI does that to try to breed for disease resistance and other tomato properties in order to make a better pepper. When I get more time that may be a cool project.

Didn't get around to it today...maybe tomorrow between changing the oil and sparkplugs in the truck, installing the sprinkler system mods and potting up my Jalapeno and Goat's Weed overwinters... :violin:

I did get to home depot and picked up about 15 cf of potting mix along with some soaker drip lines and drip adapters for my risers. A new grill!!! Oh yeah...and a few little additions to my grow shelf...

P1000218.jpg

Santa fe Seeds drying in the paper bowl...and Manzanos under them (stacked just for the photo)

P1000219.jpg

Added 3 CFL's to my grow setup, 100w equivalent 6500k only 1600 lumens each. I also switched out the outermost T8's to 4100k bulbs. Hope to see some increase in the growth rates in here. They've been doing really well out in the greenhouse, but kinda slow in here. Since I am pretty much loaded outside I needed to make a change.

Leave comments please!

Nice, man! Pretty soon you'll need to rent more grow space somewhere!

Thanks brudda! I forgot...also got to assemble the grill tomorrow! Oh...and also forgot to mention got some knockoff sluggo (Iron Phosphate) bait for my friends in the garden...

P1000220.jpg

Most of the smaller white specs are the bait...
P1000221.jpg

Headed straight for the bait!!! Get some!

The Coffee has actually prevented any further damage to the peppers...the radishes and turnips on the other hand look like swiss cheese. Less than 5 minutes after applying the bait my son and I hit the lights and found over 2 dozen of them super exited about their new meal. Bwahahahahhaha!

Hope to find over 2 dozen carcasses in the morning!

Potted a couple up today...and decided that since those 3 CFL's made such a huge difference on my grow shelf...I added 4 more.

4 x 100w equivalent daylight bulbs Home Depot $10...4 x plug socket adapter @ $1.50 each...So $16 total to add these today.

P1000222.jpg

Lights with socket adapters...

P1000223.jpg

I already had the 4' workbench power strip...

P1000224.jpg

There are a total of 12 outlets I went every other one...added one more to the near end so 3 in a row over the more mature plants...could add 5 more.

P1000225.jpg

Really don't think I need to...my light meter now pegs out in there. The T8's look off...but they're not. Might actually have to raise them a little more.

P1000226.jpg

I think I could lay in there to tan...I am half blind from looking into this thing. The 3 in the bottom right are recovering from the unfortunate greenhouse incident from a few days ago...all the green pots were moved in from the greenhouse...to see how they do compared to the ones outside. I got these running 24/7 right now, but will cut them back to 16/8 in a few days.

Might start laying out the 1/4" soaker hose and drip lines this afternoon. We'll see how motivated I get after this shiner bock. Also assembled the new grill and changed the spark plugs on my truck only to find out it needs a new battery. Ahhhh the joys of my 16yo daughter getting her license on Tuesday.

Checked on the slug situation this morning and only found 1 dead. I will go out after dark on a recon run and see what's crawling. Hope I made a dent last night.

Thanks for checking my glog!

Hey Shane, have you had any issues with seedling leaf drop?
No leaf drop other than cotyledons and only when they should have...I did experiment with some cheap soils and that stunted some of them pretty bad. They may actually be a goner. They were among my first starts back in December and they have been passed growth wise by both sets of follow on starts. They're now growing again, but slowly. I wasn't planning on keeping them all anyway, but I am still trying to figure it out and save them. I will post a side by side with a Bell pepper that's almost 2 mos old and some that are a few week old later... ridiculous!

I also have several plants that got over watered that are recovering slowly...but they're going to make it. Then twice the wife has forgotten to open the ghetto greenhouse up and we fried a few.

You grow and you learn...I have noticed that each set of starts has gotten progressively better. My grow box has been a work in progress and still is, but I will say that adding those CFL's made a HUGE difference. I could actually tell they had grown from last night through this morning. My light meter barely registered even when I held it next to the bulb. Now...It almost completely pegs out at 8" away. Now its about being careful not to burn them...if you know what I mean?

You da man, I been watching your grow. My wife wont but off on the cool stuff yet, I actually had to sneak off to but the second group of CFL's today. Only got away with it by "needing parts" to fix her faucet in the kitchen...Back to HD baby!!!

Time for an update...

The added CFL's have put the grow shelf plants on fast forward! I did the math and using AJ's lumen calculation I am a little above 3000 lumens per square foot in there. Amazing how a fairly cheap upgrade made such a big difference in growth rate. Best part is any outlet will work...so anything from an extension cord to a power strip plus a couple bucks for the socket adapters and you're in! Thanks again to CCErnst for the tip on his Glog...

Here are some pics from today...these pods may not be supers, but they're pods damn it!!!

One of my Fataliis...the dead leaf is from one of my "cooked" bishop's crowns. It has recovered, although it lost a couple leaves, its now putting out some new growth down low on the stalk...may be a blessing in disguise.

P1000242.jpg

One of my Caribbean Reds...they all have this light green color. Don't understand??? They're growing like crazy, so I am not going to worry about it.

P1000246.jpg

Chocolate Habanero...

P1000249.jpg

Finally got started on the drip soaker system...Just trying to get it all layed out for now nothing is in permanently until I get my plant layout all set. I will be laying out around 300' of soaker lines.

Well plant out has begun. I have rolled the dice on all but one tomato...supposed to get down to 39 tonight so I guess we'll see if they make it. We are usually a few degrees cooler than the forecast where I am. I should probably cover them tonight...but I won't. lol

I am holding off on all the supers and chinenses for a couple more weeks, but I will pot up all my largest annuums next weekend into their 5 gallon homes.

My son also planted some beans today (hyacinth, anasazi and royal burgundy)...he's excited about having his own plants (for now). He's also got some radishes going and has been helping with "the war on the slugs"...

Thanks for looking!
Comments are always welcomed!

Thanks...noticing that every round of starts it goes a little better. Also that every time I think I have the system locked in...something changes and I have a setback. lol

No Olde E today, I had to settle for a Fat Tire.

Lookin good man! The Primos , Kavals, choc bhuts were very slow to wake up on this end. I timed out waiting on Orange Bhuts-hopefully yours will awaken. The Monsters, Devil Tongue Brown, Black Nags were all up in a week-as were the Purple Bhuts/White bhuts and Black Cobras as well. I have yet to transfer pics to photobucket-its a pain in the ass with all the jumping back and forth!I did manage 84 transplants in the 2-3 days prior to leaving this time-so I will be nervous as a cat between progress reports from home.
Cheers-

Yeah...I've all but given up hope on the Kavals and White Habs...I think I have a couple seeds left, but I might just try them again next season. Maybe once I get the rest of my peppers out and in the ground I will try again depending on how I do on garden space. They're still on the germ mat, along with a couple Manzanos I got out of a store bought pod...so there is still hope.

Great looking plants, Shane! When you get them in 5 gallon
pots, they will explode. It will be fun watching you move everything
outside!

I sure hope so! It will be really nice to not have to pamper them so much. So easy at this point to be too wet, too dry, too hot, too cold...should be able to get by watering once a week (maybe twice during July and August)

I know I'll take some flak for it, but I went with MG Moisture Control for my transplants and pot up. I had really good results with it last year, and I'm falling back on what I am familiar with and that I know works at this point. One of the other issues with multiple soils is they all dry at different rates. I have one soil that requires watering every other day..some that can go 3 or 4 days and some that can go almost a week...I am slowly shifting them all over to the MG at this point during potups. They are the ones that need water every 3-4 days and the moisture is pretty consistant top to bottom of the soil The other stuff will be bone dry and dusty on top, but a mud pit down deep...makes watering a nightmare. If momma waters for my while I'm at work, she doesn't know which ones are thirsty and which ones are drowning.
Just got a call from momma and the temp in the Greenhouse is 105 open with the fan blowing...I'm 100 miles away and won't be home for several hours...ughhh. Hope they're ok.

Thanks again Paul! Still digging the clone/pruning updates. Really a trip how fast those pruned plants are taking off! I think I am going to start trimming a few of my annuums to see it I can boost their growth! Still need to get around to attempting the grafts as well just been way too busy.

Being sick isn't so bad.. I have time to check up on glogs! :D Your pepper forest looks freaking money dude! I too am excited to see all those bad boys go into there new outside homes. Your OW jal is going nuts as well. I like the CFL strip.. nice to get a little more knowledge on what I can do inside. I thought about goin full CFL's a couple weeks back until I finally tamed my HOT5 system. It'll be interesting to see the growth rate now with the new setup.. can you see a difference yet? anyway, great job dude.

"I know I'll take some flak for it, but I went with MG Moisture Control for my transplants and pot up. I had really good results with it last year, and I'm falling back on what I am familiar with and that I know works at this point. "

I used added Sta-Green Moisture control to my soil mix(60-70% soil mix-30% SG Moist. Con.) last year for all the containers, except for 4 of the late starters. My schedule will have me "disappeared" for 2-4 weeks at a time quite frequently, and my wife("of course I watered them") is less than diligent about "my" pepper plants care while I'm gone. The last trip in before harvesting started(critical time!)last year, I got home in the wee hours to find every container at an alarming "full droop", with 4 dead as doornails(guess which 4?). I went into emergency mode and started soaking em down after inspecting the damage, and by daylight they were all up and recovering...except those 4. So flak or no flak, I use it, and will continue to! Watch the amounts though..I was lazy with a pot that I used later and used only the moisture control, we got a good rain , and that pot had a "jello" eruption!
Your plants should be fine with the 105 temps on a short term hopefully-one of my germ trays reached 112-15 degrees because the dehydrator used to keep em warm was too close to the bottom of the tray...and after really fretting about starting another tray,I decided to wait and see. Got almost 90 percent germ there! The no shows were in one the trays that never strayed above 80 deg.Go figure....Great log by the way!
Keep it up-

Thanks for the vote of confidence! I came home and only 2 were really hurting...but they'll make it. I watered them about 15 minutes before this photo, and it was already perking up...

I went ahead and potted this guy up to a 1 gallon because the roots were filling the bottom of the container. I hope that helps keep if from looking like this again.

yeah-thats spooky. Too many roots too close together keeps the amount of surface area exposed to soil very low.....the upside of a young plant getting root bound is that the plant generally has to be fairly healthy, and growing conditions good, for it to produce all those roots. What is the growing medium in that pot?

If anyone can bring it back, it's you, brother! It will
be cool to see the now and later photos! A larger
soil mass will sure help with watering in these circumstances.
