StettoGro '19: In For a Dime

76....In English that would be ALMOST TWICE AS DAMNED MANY AS LAST YEAR.

Ah well, Last year I dwelled on downsizing, this year I must have assumed it would be automatic.

I argued with myself over whether to glog at all this year, other than to carry over noobishness from the last two seasons I don't have that much to offer...But everyone loves to see a Zone 3 die-hard gardener scratch and claw his way through a short season!!

Anyhow, this is how my week started---I was particularly proud of my innovative use of the pill caddy....

Soakin seeds.jpg

That was the first "load", almost all black seeds. The next day the yellow seeds went in while the black ones found their nests. The sad thing is the seeds I didn't put in; the Paprika and the Urfa Biber and the Aji Limo and the and the and the...Until that damned greenhouse gets itself magically erected I gotta limit myself.

OK, at least one of each Pubescen is going into fivers or larger containers. So will the best of the Pimenta De Neyde x Bonda Ma Jacques and my Sri Lanka Chilli Red competitor and what long season peppers I can. What goes into the 8th acre this year will be treated to a till-less grow, it's at least worth a try. Most of the anuums will be out there.

For what it's worth, here is the current state of my grow....

I'm having trouble with the P'de N X Ma J white pheno seeds, they remain dormant after a replant over a week ago. I have a violet F7 that is the cutest little purple thing! I'm going to make sure I planted all that you sent (nursery is in a bit of chaos this time of grow) before I ask if you have more...

I dug up the pouches and found plenty of both white & violet, commencing a soak now. I do remember you saying to plant them all....

They are buggers, for sure, Eric. I think they
dried at too high a temperature. This Falls'
seed will be better!

AutoPT kudos!
Thanks on the PT patontheback, it ain't as easy as it looks!

One of the time consuming things I did when I kept seed last year was to cull seed before drying. My dehydrator is an old Waring with no temp control. Most of my saved seed has been germinating this year at near 100%. Dunno what's up with the Aleppo and Big Jims though...My Jimmy Nardellos are just now starting to wake up...

I did, by the way, get 6/6 on your Peruvian Red Rocoto seed. You got a little history on those?

I usually get 100% on those as well, Eric!
It's a great strain...
You got a little history on those?
They are descendants of some Red Rocoto seed
a peruvian friend brought back from Peru several
years ago. This season is the third generation
from the original, since I did not grow it last year,
(I first grew it in 2016.)

I just spent an hour typing an update on my phone, taking a pic, got to "add reply", and my phone dumped my browser, post and all....So here's an abbreviated version of Week 3...

We had an ice-dam incident the other day, had to evacuate the plants from the prime south-facing window in the pantry, then get up on the roof and chisel/shovel a 6 inch slab that held the gable open for melt-off to get into my attic. I typed up a blow-by-blow, maybe it's better that my phone crashed my post....anyway...

Since then I picked up a $10 48" florescent T8 fixture and took the ballast out for LED operation and added it to the grow. I thought about getting another 300 watt LED gro-cube, but they're pricey for a hobbyist and so I cloned the 6000k LED tubes I already had. The plants don't seem to notice the difference...

Now before any of you knuckleheads start trying to count pepper plants here, once I'd curbed the flow of roof-borne agua into the attic above I placed a 15-Solo Cup tray onto the sill of that south-facing pantry window. I doubt I need to explain how differently these little bastiges behave under direct sunlight as opposed to anything artificial, but it is quite noticeable.

Without getting into the detail I had time for when I first typed all this, I had another Pdreadie pop yesterday, a variety that I've always had issues getting to thrive for me. This is #3, so it might be my year, The cotys on these guys are virtually microscopic, is this normal for the SB types? Anyway, they recover well enough this time around, I'm not complaining!!

I actually have a Jimmy Nardello poking it's heavily helmeted little head out today, yes Scott, I'm trying to keep it moist....

New Rocotos include a half dozen Peruvian Red that PaulG gifted and a pair of Ecuador Sweet Red Rocotos from GIP. His Pineapple Rocotos are apparently waiting for a grander entrance, I'll alert the media... :high:

I replanted a bunch of PaulG--sent Pimenta de Neyde X Ma Jacques F6 seeds, both white and violet, they are now on the clock. Believe it or not, it's still 3 weeks earlier than I used to start seed vegetables, so there's no panic...just a niggling itch to open that first beer earlier each day....

I forgot a crapload of what I'd typed up for this update, but it ain't like I'm on a gub'mint grant, now is it.... :snooty:

Carry on.....

Nice!  Really pulling for that XLB.  Still haven't seen so much as a bump in the soil from mine yet, with a few seeds each at 9 and 21 days.  I plan to give it every chance to come through, though.

Seems like you have a pretty strong stable of rocotos going for this season. Do you have a good amount of space for them?  Are they all going in containers?

Oh yay, oh yay, oh yay, gather close and hear!

On Day 25 I have witnessed the Rising of the Hook: the last Gelbe Riesen Yellow has bursted forth from the earth!

I now have hope for an XL Brown, maybe a second Mini Brown. Like the rotund old bald guy said: Nevah give in, nevah surrendah...

N-N-NEVAH!!

I don't usually post pics in other glogs, but I thought this might be appreciated. My first XL Brown hook and it's from the ones I dropped 21 days ago. Hopefully they're just slow and will start popping now.  FWIW, about 2 days ago I decided to give them a nudge and upped their humidity and temps a bit (to 78F). Don't know if that had an influence or it was just time, but anyway, it's good to see signs of life and definitely stay the course!

Yes I do, no and no. I haven't designated the seating arrangement yet, but some are going to have to reside in the 8th acre. I'm planning a till-less grow for peppers out there this year, we'll see how it goes.

I have a dozen OWs to shuffle around as well, but I'm hoping to get at least one of each newby in a 5+ gallon container. The containers are going to have store-bought container dirt, budget allowing.

This is what gives me the Hope. I have a new pair of Jimmy Nardellos this morning, 26 days after coming out of the soak. That Gelbe Riesen is a runt (see pic above), but all my runts have done ok, especially the PDreadies...Remember I'm still waiting on my Big Jims too...

Don't give me any ideas...LOL

Here ya go, Scott, maybe even better than a PT (be sure to wait till #100 is up if you want that next one, wink-wink): You sent me some LO Thai seed a couple seasons ago. I wound up digging this one out of the 8th acre to try and get some ripe ones, it wound up an OW.

Podding up in March! I'll have nice ripe Thai peppers in June!
