Stickman's 2012 Gochu Pepper Glog

Well, here we go... Started about 35 Korean Gochu Peppers and a few Korean salad peppers, jalapenos and orange habs. All are mostly up today but the habs. I started them early last week in my heated grow tent down in my cellar on top of a grow mat, but didn't have the thermostat quite dialed in. When I left it it was 70 degrees f. in the tent. When I checked again the next morning it was 85 degrees, and I was afraid I'd cooked the seeds, so I moved them onto my kitchen windowsill on the grow mat and awaited developments. Looking much better now. I'll give the Habs until the weekend to pop, then move the flat down to the grow tent.

Stickman those ribs were krazy !!! PLants are going off ! If you save seeds from your greens I would love some ! I have some Thai,Japanese peppers budding here..
Hi Dan, when you say greens... do you mean the green chiles or asian greens like shungiku and mizuna? Cheers

I tried to look at your plants Rick...but I kept ending up at the ribs! MMMMmmmmmmm!
Hi Shane, Oh yeah... I went through 'em most rikki tik! I made a dipping sauce for the ribs and rice cake by thinning some Gochu Jang in a little black vinegar and soy sauce and adding some toasted sesame oil, toasted sesame seeds and kicked it up a notch by adding some Gochu Garu from last year's pepper crop. The July weather we had here at the end of May made me think of ice cream. I have an electric ice cream freezer and about five quarts of frozen blueberries... I think I'm going to try making blueberry ice cream with coconut milk instead of dairy and Guajillo chiles when it heats up again... We're having rain and cool temperatures here for the next few days.

It's raining too hard to bring the camera outside, but the Jalapenos and all of my Korean salad peppers are blossoming. Pics later if it stops raining...

Sun's out this morning, so here are some flower pics from my Jalapeno and Korean salad peppers.

Always glad to see Ladybugs in my vegetable patch! No sign of Aphids at the moment, and I'd like to keep it that way!

Wow Rick looks amazing some of the varieties look more compact then others is that due to topping off or just naturally grown that way. I think you got another ladybug in the last pic on the upper left hand side, but I think she is camera shy or mooning you.

HI Fernando, No topping... everything just as it comes. The high wind we had the middle of last week snapped one of my chiles that had a weakened stem, and also snapped some of the side branches... some with blossoms and pods on them. The plants all look healthy though, so I'm not going to worry. I did hedge my bets though and staked the main stems of all my chiles. Cheers!

Hey, Rick, I see I stayed away from your glog for too long! It appears you
are in full growth mode up East! Your garden looks great, and the peppers
are awesome. Odd that your Serranos are short and compact - mine are
sky rockets. One hit about 26" in a 6" pot, and has grown another inch or
two since planting out. If I hadn't pinched both of my Serranos, they would
be 4' tall by now! But I digress.

Keep up the great food and garden pages! Always great to see what other
folks are doing with their peppers! Enjoy what's left of the weekend, bro!

Hey Paul, thanks for stopping in. Boy, if you can go from zero to 180 so to speak, maybe the superhots aren't so hard after all. I think I want to work up to it this year though... I'll be getting lots of Orange Habs this year if the number of buds I see on my two plants is any indication... I think there's definitely some Jerk Chicken in my future this summer... My wife found some cheddar cheese with Habs in it at the local supermarket and we both liked it, so maybe she'll come along for the ride with me. :onfire: Cheers!

So weird knowing that I packed those seeds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Great pleasure to see mate. God job.

Really hope you get the Ttaeng Cho and Sang I sent- you'll love the Peter x- beautiful plant and tttttaaassttyy chilli- if iy takes the the congo side- O I'll be crossing more soon.

Thanks guys! It's been a kick, really! The weather here has been a little cool since the front came through last week but I can't complain about the amount of rain and sun we've gotten since. Everything in the garden is just shooting up, including the weeds. Fortunately I have plastic mulch down around the chiles so they don't take long to weed. Cheers!

unbelievably green! congrats. Hope things keep crankin for ya!
Hi Britt, your chiles are looking very green and happy too. Hopefully you'll be able to hang onto all the plants you've started... It's hard to part with them after all the time and effort (and money) spent, even if you run out of room. With the exception of the Korea Winner gochus, all the chiles I grew this year are for the first time and I wouldn't know which ones to cut since I don't have any history with growing them. I really want to see how they come out too! Cheers

Looking forward to it... I'm fully extended this season, but will let you know how it goes next year. Cheers!

More rain on and off today but the chiles march on... I had one Cheon Wu Shin Jo that was a fatal casualty last week due to the high wind we had and one of my three Kim-chi gochu pepper plants was stunted, so I replaced them with a couple of Holy Mole plants I got today from the Laurenitis greenhouse in Amherst, MA.

Tick Tock my Rick! Time keeps on slippin toward harvest day my friend!
Hi Shane, I've got some gochus that are almost five inches long. They may grow another inch or so, but when they start to yellow I'll pick some for Yeolmu Mulkimchi and Gochu Jeon and post the pics. The Korean spring radishes should be ready by then too. After seeing your comments about how Cayenne peppers out your way grow fast, pump out a quick harvest and then languish has me looking out to see if that happens here. I haven't noticed it before, but maybe that's because of our shorter growing season. Hope you've got a lid on things out your way after quarantining your sick plants. Cheers
