Thats not a bug, this is a bug...

Is it some sort of cicada or locust?

We have one hereabouts that gets pretty huge, and my cat likes to catch them and bring them in the house to play with 'em. Nothing like coming awake at 2 am and hearing the loud buzzzzzz sound!

It must be.I know we have biggest moths & cockroaches here...but 6 1/2 " folded wingspan..& can you see the fangs (i know theres an entomological term for them, but at 1/2 " long i consider that a fang)

As for the buzzing when you wake up....not going there

my first thought was a cicada. they bury themselves for some time (years) before reemerging.

how's this for a bug? didn't dig it up in my yard..it was on display at this butterfly place near where i used to live. the butterflies were nice, but i went to see their live bug display that had several tarantulas, scorpions, other spiders, and a decent sized centipede. lots of pinned and preserved specimens too.

haha nice. i've never kept a walking stick of any kind, but i believe they are illegal here in the states. people have them, just not supposed to. i've even heard of people getting raided and having them seized. basically they're worried about them becoming established here and unbalancing ecosystems.

here's a pic of the whole display case for those guys.

If i'm not mistaken(and i could be), but i'm pretty sure that cicadas can't bite, per se. They pierce plant surfaces to suck on sap with their mouth stylets, which are enclosed in a beak-like sheath. So i doubt it's a cicada, although it is within the size range of the bigger ones.

The buzzing *that wakes me up*

You wouldn't think it was so funny if it was you who had to put a bare foot down on the floor where there's an angry cicada lurking. Nasty, cunning brutes, they'll have your toe off in a heartbeat if you're not careful.

I believe wearing cowboy boots to bed would take care of that little problem...I am so helpful...

that would also stop the other cat from attacking my feet when I move under the covers. Well, it wouldn't stop her, I wouldn't care, is all.

Pity I hate cowboy boots so much.
