contest Throwdown Smacktalk

I recommend finding some recipes either online or in cookbooks or cooking magazines as a starting point

We actually used recipes from Sunset magazine as inspiration for the grilled corn and the potatoes in the Grill throwdown a couple months ago.

So...what...are you trying to weasle back into favor now? ;)

Thanks for the rules & advice geeme :), I watch cooking shows sometime as my Wife is addicted to them so I should do ok and I have 3 signature dishes but that's it, had them since I was a Batchelor. So be prepared I gots my heart swoonin dishes to pull out when the time is right

hahahah.. this thread is great!!! and frydad - just to clarify - my smacktalk was purely against beating nova :) which um... i did :) anyways if it were a pie-pie throwdown and not a pizza-pie td i would have been out on top! :)

i should be in on this next coming one.. although with two months or so with no chilli, my tolerance is massively down :) should be fun!

So sad. I started thinking about my hottest eating experience to-date, and decided Killer Shrimp was it. Went online this morning to find that the beloved place (Redondo Beach, CA) has closed - such a travesty! Guess that's what I get for moving away.... The Killer Shrimp restaurant only served one thing - killer shrimp. No veggies, no salads, no desserts. You could get it over pasta or rice, but that was it. Oh yes, and one more thing - they served it with a huge collander full of cut-up bread. Not sure what pepper(s) went into their recipe, but it definitely made my cayennes look tame. My hottest eating experience so far was a serving of killer shrimp - without eating any of the bread.

Anyone else familiar with Killer Shrimp, and have any idea what pepper(s) were in it?

geeme, are you going to put that killer shrimp on a bun and serve it as a burger?

And when are we going to start talking about what is actually a burger? Anything on a bun (shredded, diced, whole pieces of meat, ground meat made into a patty, veggie or tofu patty) or only a hunk of meat or a patty of some kind?

What about the bun? only round? What about shredded pork on a hoagie roll?

Good questions - I've been thinking about the bread, myself. I am not a huge starch fan, so don't usually eat sandwiches, including buns with a burger stuffed between. I don't think the shape of either the bun (if any) or the burger should matter, but I do define a burger as being a patty of some sort - in my world shredded pork is not a burger, and nor is killer shrimp (which is a saucy concoction), unless you included it with some kind of binding agent. Because I define "burger" as a patty, it would include meat-less (veggie, tofu) as well as meat (land, air, and sea) patties. But whole pieces of meat don't fit my definition, either - a roast beef sandwich is a roast beef sandwich, even if you put it on a bun.

So my vote would be: Bread - optional, Shape - optional, Meat - meatless or with meat (except beef, of course), Form - patty.

What about a chunk of chicken breast? Or a slab of fish? I think those would qualify...???

Gasificada, blushing with timidity...

Wait! How did I get dragged into this!?

That red blush you see ain't timidity... it's FIRE and RAGE!

:hell:

Where's The Beef? Throwdown

Burgers will have to be ground meat, seafood, or veggie shaped into a patty and cooked, any way. A chicken breast is not a burger. Ground chicken shaped into a patty is a chicken burger. Ground veggies bound with egg is a veggie burger.

A burger is also not a wrap. There must be two separate forms of bread on either side. There is plenty of room for creativity here. Think of the classic beef burger on a bun and now think of how you would recreate it with different meats and breads, while keeping the classic look (as far as assembly).

Toppings and sides can be whatever you want.

These are not the official rules, but now you know the basics.

Oh, thank you, thank you - I couldn't have done a better job, myself. That is, how kind of you to post a reply that put the two pics almost right next to each other - it really brings the blush out!
And I have to admit - I see I've assumed you have been a past TD participant, based on the postings of the old-timers. So where are you in the TD mix - a newbie, or a vet?

DIBS on the seafood burger!!!! I already have a killer idea brewin.........

Real Burgers are truck stop Burgers (basically burgers for truckies) and must have slightly TOASTED buns and 1 slice of Beetroot included with all the other ingredients. If you tried to order a chicken or seafood burger at a truckie stop....... :flamethrower:
It would be "Bye bye tree hugging hippy no good feral bloody metrosexual city emo skinny jean loving hipster".

I personally like Chicken and fish burgers but have to agree they sure know what a real burger is.

That's the point of the Throwdown brother. To not make a traditional burger ;)

Oh yeah, he he I just started picturing a truck burger and got carried away in the moment mmmmmmm I can just picture one now. Oh yes Paulky one of the best burgers I ever had was on a boat in Noosa and it was a Kangaroo burger with home made tomato chutney.
