Trippa and the better late then never New Zealand Summer

So things have been slow ...I have been slow to get things going with my plants... Summer has officially arrived weather wise in the last week only to officially finish technically in 2 days time ... Its been cool and wet ...

My glasshouse after some wild winds combined with UV damage on old plastic has rendered it useless for now.

I had a few overwinters which I planted out. A few overwinters which are still in little pots which are finally away now. And a few new plants outside as well.

All in all I will be lucky to get any ripe pods this year. (Although plans are afoot for some lights and DWC buckets for an experimental winter grow for this hydroponic vigin [emoji1] )

Yeah not far off about 39 degrees south ... But with all the volatility of an island rather then the big extremes of a large land mass ... Ie not as hot and not as cold (on a regular basis) as someone at the same equivalent latitude on a big continent. I think you might be right ... Just to get things jump started started
Cheers Rick!

Cool! This looked interesting and useful for you https://beyondorganicnztour.com/tag/plastic-mulch/
It brings up the point about what to do about the fast-growing grasses you have there.

Great pics Tristan!

Glad to see the healthy plants! Love the hilly terrain, and it looks like you get nice rains too! Everything is thriving, so a good year ;)

I think I see a Bermuda type grass (invasive), that's what we have here. Really tough to eradicate!

Yeah we have plenty of rain year round here roughly 2000-3000mm ... Dependent on the year ... This is last years totals for the region...

f955efdcf8f4d26fa370eb76c2a97534.jpg

Our total was about 2700mm for our property here and closer to 3000mm for another property my family owns further east of this one ... As you can see up the nearby mountain 7000-8000mm is not unusual.

This shows over the past 7 years

https://www.trc.govt.nz/environment/maps-and-data/monthly-rainfall/rainfall-in-previous-years/

The grass you are talking about we call 'Couch' (pronounced coo-ch). To be honest that isn't too much of an issue compared with some of the other weeds we have here such as
'Kikuyu' grass, and 'Convovulus ... Now they are terrible!

Thanks for stopping in Devv and the kind words. Yeah the plants are extremely healthy which is all I can ask for at this point.

Cheers Rick!! I gave that a good read. Certainly interesting reading.
Dunedin is quite a way south of us (approximately 46 degrees south) on the South island and so as the article pointed out is quite different climate wise and subsequently growth wise of perennial plants and grasses to us.
Although mulching is a no-brainer to me regardless of the type of mulch used ... Who wants to weed gardens!! I am looking at using lasagne type layering permaculture with thick cardboard as a weed suppressant over winter and going from there.
I was interested in doing some Ramial chipped wood beds but finding suitable hardwood chips around here is nigh on impossible

We are getting some pretty mean south easterly gale winds at the moment so I hope I haven't spoken too soon about my healthy plants

I'm really glad to see your grow rolling along, Tristen.
And that you are getting a little break from the
undesirable weather.  I hope the Red Rocoto
produces at least enough poddage for some seed.
If not, let me know and I'll send some more.  Or
whatever else you'd like.

3000mm of rain a year!  By my rough calculation,
that's almost 120" a year.  That's three times what
we get in our neighborhood   Gads, you must
have pests and weeds galore there, unless your
winters are too cold for them to run amok.

Cheers Paul!! Yeah I might have been too quick to call a pod forming on the Red Rocoto Peruvian MKT based on my quick look last night after work.
I might look at my seed stock and call in a favour on one or two of your varieties if you have any spare seeds later on brother!!
Yeah our winters here are cold enough to keep most pests in check and the weed growth slows but come late spring things really start growing. That's why I am trying to go as far to the permaculture side of things I can regarding mulch and plantings in the non vege parts of the garden.
We get probably 10-20 frosts a year and every few years some snow might settle for a day or so but not often. Luckily we usually have winds here often during winter so that keeps the frosts at bay some of the time

Now that's what I'm talkin' about, Tristen   :metal: :woohoo:
If all goes as per my experience the purple
F3's will make light colored pods - maybe the
green ones will have yellow pods like the F2 Looking
forward to seeing how this all plays out.  I may
do a full-on inside winter grow of the first seeds
harvested this Summer, germinating in Sept/Oct,
to get the F6 going ASAP.  I think I could grow 3 in
#2 nursery pots.  Big enough to start making a few
pods for an early Summer harvest in 2018.  I'll send
F6 seeds as soon as I can this season!

We in the mid of the north American continent have just come out of a windy spell from hell. It would seem that all the states around us took turns sucking....

Luck!

Only just seen this glog Tristen but just read through very keenly.
Fantastic looking plants, your f5 cross has great looking foliage . All the pubescans look stunning and nice to see flowers and pods.

You have a great yard and i like the story of the greenhouse use to be home to Orchids . So your a brewer as well ? ;) i brew my own cider after been given permission to a true cider apple orchard just down the road in our village. Beautiful ice cold and fantastic with a bbq on a warm summers evening lol.

Keep up your good work and hope you have  great yields of ripe pods .

Trippa Rippa!

Absolute stunning bit of land you got there! The kind I have wet dreams about....

2 years you say you've been over there now?? Wow! Where has time gone?

I know the weather's been shit, but bro, it's been horrid here! Haven't been keeping an eye on the Goldy weather but here in Brissy think we've had like only 3 or 4 days with highs under 30 since before January. Lows don't wanna drop below 20 either. And the humidity the last week or two... UGH! Hanging for that crisp, cool, mild winter of ours here, aye. :P Though, I'm legit worried summer this year is never gonna end!

Anyways, man, hoping the better weather keeps up a bit longer for you and hoping to see some kick-ass harvest pics! :D

Cheers Paul ... I have been neglecting things in the garden lately ...between Record rain in the past few days and away on a work (read drinking) trip ... I have only been able to get into the garden today ... Will post some updated f5 pics

Fingers crossed with the high winds in your area. We're going through an extreme weather cycle here too, but happily my plants aren't going outside for at least another 4 weeks. Cheers!
Cheers Rick! I see you have had snow again as well ... Fingers crossed it melts quick smart and you are able to get that outdoor space cooking!

Cheers Devv!! The winds were thankfully fairly kind

Cheers for stopping by! Everyone has their own weather issues ... No climate is perfect unfortunately ... Or maybe its a good thing so we don't all move to one spot and fight for space!!

Cheers Sim for the kind words! I would love to try my hand at proper cider but trying to perfect a few beers first!

Cheers Gassy!! Yeah not a bad space but would trade some heat with you right now ... Hope Cyclone Debbie didn't hit you too hard ... Its certainly made a mess of New Zealand over the past few days

The last few days have looked like this across a lot of New Zealand ... This was taken a few kilometres east of my place ... Thankfully we live on a hill

The main chilli space

The garden is looking pretty cramped now ... Pity this wasn't 3 months ago and I would be swimming in pods

PDN x BMJ f5s needed to be repotted 3 weeks ago but procrastination got in my way

PDN x BMJ f3s ... Again need to be potted on and thinned out
