Trippaul Threat (PdN x BMJ) Community Grow

This is a dedicated grow log for Tristen's awesome cross, which I
have been growing out since 2014.  I'll start with a bit of history and
some photos documenting what's happened so far.

In January of 2014, Tristen (Trippa) sent me a little care package of seeds.
In the package were two generations of a cross he had made, which he just
called 'Mystery Cross, F1' and 'Mystery Cross, F2'.

Here's Trippa's Mystery Cross seedlings in February of 2014:

Both generations showing the purple foliage characteristic since the beginning.

Up close look at Trippa's Mystery Crosses, F1 and F2.  Both culled to a single
plant after the photo taken, so I only had one plant of each generation:

In 2015, I planted some seed from 2014's yellow F2 pods.
Out of 6 seeds, 6 sprouted.  ¡Viva! fresh seeds!

These are Tristen's Mystery Cross, F3, 2015.  No doubt about purple parentage here!
You can see a tiny late hooker in the cup on the left.  With that one, 84% showed
the purple trait.  Kinda sorry now I didn't follow up on the green F3 seedling:

The red Bhut Jolokia that somehow picked up a purple gene.  4/6 showed the trait.
The only other plant in the grow with the purple expression, and not far away, was
Tristen's cross.  Later:  After watching the BJ Hybrid and the Mystery Cross develop
alongside each other, that the Cross is the other parent in the BJ cross.  See 2016

Some of Tristen's (Trippa) F3 cross.  My neighbor's plant has thrown yellow pods (I don't know what happened to those seeds):

That's the highlights from 2015 - will add some of last year's highlights in next day or two.

Interesting Paul Trippa you can see so many genetics of both parentage in both the pods as they go through ripening stage in the different generations , do you both think it will stablize now at this creamy colour or can you see flecks of either yellow or purple reappearing as it gets to f6/7/8 ?

And the important issue has it got a good all round flavour of both pods ;) i know Paul said its quite hot for him lol .....

Paul you definately got green fingers buddy , great to see some nice tree like plants fully loaded with pods .

I think it tastes good, but I've abused my taste buds for 70 years,
so I'm not much at describing taste.  It's either pleasurable,
acceptable, or sucks for me.  I like Fatalis and Red Habaneros, too,
as well as Chocolate Habs as far as hot-super hot peppers go.
Paul you definately got green fingers buddy , great to see some nice tree like plants fully loaded with pods .   They always look good in the summer sun!
Here's an August 2016 pic.  I had three F5 plants last year:

Some august pods lower right.  Contrasts nicely with the other colors:

My favorite pods from last year.  Love the purple blush:

Some pods going into dryer at 105-110*F for seed selection.  Unfortunately
the thermostat went out on my dehydrator, and toasted my seeds:

Last harvest before freeze:

Forgot about this - From Sept. - Oct. Harvest.  Saved it for Oct 31 post:

Hope that gives a good idea pod of the progression through last
season.  Will catch up with the progress this season soon as I can.

2017 started with really bad germination rates in
general and really disappointing for the F5.

Jan, 25th.  Why couldn't those two new sprouts have been in a different cell?:

Another, smaller seedling visible here:

Feb. 16:
The F5  PDN x Bonda Ma Jacques is becoming
a striking plant, and the late-germinating sibling
is showing the same traits:

Be sure to check here for history of the two smaller plants you will see later in this grow.  And here.

That pretty much brings it up to date.  I have some pics from the
past day or two to post - will do it by phone, then add captions.

Absolutely beautiful! The plant AND the pods are gorgeous their entire cycle. I love it! Excellent work on this cross, Paul and fantastic work & vision, Tristen!  Indeed!

-Adam
It's Tristen's baby, he could have trained a monkey to do what I did

Seriously, thank you, Adam.  I felt honored that he trusted me with his
baby during some unsettled times in his grow situation.  I'm happy it
has gone well, and that there is a lot of potential, still.  I wish I would
have saved some of those older seeds...

I love that pic of the purplish blush. Me, too!  I remember now. A great looking plant. Sticks out among the others for sure.

Thanks for the excellent documentation.
My pleasure, Charles.  It's always cool to know the
background of a pepper you like to grow   :)

Here are the latest pics of the F5 - after this, we're
in        uncharted territory      Going for broke!

Hope you have enjoyed the story of Tristen's
Mystery Cross, and that we can write future
chapters together!

Wowsers! Those purple to white pods are stunning!

PDN is such a unique plant. One of a kind. And always brings something interesting to crosses!

The Pimenta De Neyde strain I had also been growing for 2 seasons showed prolific podding in the heat , was a tall deep purple plant with quite stretched internodal spacing which never once got hit with broadmites when almost all other plants around it did.
I found the same thing with PDN, Trips. Seeing it pod like crazy in the height of summer was truly something. Although, not sure if it was a case of not being touched by broad mite or whether it just had the ability to withstand the symptoms of attack. I did see signs on infestation on my plants but the damage was absolutely minimal.

You grow some bad-ass plants, Paul. :onfire:

+1 Trippa!  Good to see your name on the forum, Brother!

Thank you, brother! It's good to be back among such warm people such as yourself and Tristen. :D

(And most of everyone else, of course!)

This thread is definitely something I will be keeping a close eye on myself. Really cool seeing where things started, where they went, where they're at now... and what's gonna happen next!

From this point on, it's as much Tristen's thread as mine, and I hope next
season we can have enough people growing the F6 to make the thread
really interesting.

Managed to get some pics of the 'whole family' yesterday.

The tallest plant (F5-1) hooked on 1/12.
The second tallest (F5-2) hooked on 1/26, so is two weeks behind F5-1.

The two smaller plants, F5-3 and F5-4 (brown pot), sprouted in F5-1's
container at the same time as F5-2.  F5-4 is about one day behind F5-3.

They grew in there until they had a second set of leaves then were cut,
rooted in test tubes and the AeroGarden, and transplanted to 2-liter containers.
So the two smaller plants are the same age as F5-2!

That's a 24" (60 cm) ruler in F5-1's pot.

I think the smaller will go into #3 pots for
OW.
