WalkGood 2013, 2014 and Beyond

This is my first Glog so excuse what ever mess I may create, lol. Took way to many pictures today (31), so Ill post the first 9 and add more in subsiquent posts but didn't think it a good idea to start out doube or triple posting just for additional pics. I will also be updating the thread over time to show growth, pods and such ... but the first few pics of are of the young ones. While Ive been growing my favorite peppers for around 17 years (guess, lol), I always limited myself to 3 varieties or less. Jamaican peppers/Hab, Jalapeño and Cayenne. When things got too tuff Id milk them till they died off and stop growing for a while and start fresh. Most years I only grew the Jamaicans which are my favorite for cooking, home made sauce and the occasional powder to rub meats with or put into certain recipes.

Current inventory:
  • 5 Jalapeño
  • 1 Cayenne
  • 1 Serrano
  • 7 Datil
  • 15 Jamaican Habs (3 large around 3 years old and 12 less than year old)
  • 12 more to be determined
The young ones below are not that old with the oldest being the JA Habs which are around 3 years old now. I happen to find THP site while looking for advice/knowledge to cure one of my Jalapeños, thanks for all the good info guys/girls! In 2012 I added Datil, Thai hot, Cayenne, Jalapeño and Serrano to the mix, totaling around 41 plants now. Hats off \o_ to those of you who grow many more, dont know how you find the time and patients when things go off. That said, Ive done my fair share of battling aphids, nematodes, snails and white fly to no end over the last 3 years. Fortunately I believe to have things under control for now so Ive decided to add 12 new peppers to the mix from the listed seeds shown below.

Ill select 12 to start near end of December or first week in January from the seeds below and give credit once I get some new ones going :)

Need to start clearing our yard to grow more & more & more peppers ;) (*WG rollseyes*)

Top left to right: two Thai Hot and one Cayenne. Bottom row all Datil. BTW I don't grow everything in clay pots, just happen to get a good deal on a bunch in yard sale for a few bucks.

Huge live Oak in background, there's 5 of them in front yard so the shades hard to avoid in first few hours of sun rise.

8 Jamaican Habs in ground and cherry tomatoe in the pot, I need to find a good place to plant the tomatoe soon.

Top left Serrano and more Datil, I'm probably going to gift a few Datils for xmass and some of the other peppers

Edit: final list copied to first post from post #40. These seeds were soaked in water on 12/31/12 and planted 1/1/13 \o/

Edit: This list is constantly being updated as new hooks pop. Even though I lost #5 :/ I will not give up as there are 2 other seeds in dat egg mon ....

Very nice looking pods!

The ghost pepper a few pictures sets back looks true to me, but I don't considering myself an expect in such things.

Have a great trip!
Thanks for the confirmation Stefan and the well vacation wishes. I noticed that subsequent pods look a little gnarlier but the basic shape is the same.

Between the mp3 player and chile love, it looks like you're all set for the trip. Enjoy, and post lots of pics when you get back.
Just back late last night, dark inspection shows they’re doing fine but I suspect loaded with aphids and mites after a week of wild growth. Thanks for the well wishes ... travel pods and powder came in super handy ^_^

Well I see you're bringing the important things :D

Pods are killa!

Once again safe trip!

And glad the storm broke up, yeah I missed it, still not caught up from my little trip..
Scott thanks for the well wishes and now it’s my turn to catch up :/ I tried to read a little and hit “like dis” while I was gone but as you know da net is just a hindrance to your fun time on vacation and best left at home, lolz.

Awesome updates as usual, Ramon. Thought I'd throw in my 2¢ worth on the red bhut, since that's the only one I have any experience with before this year. The plant and flowers certainly look right to me. The pod seems a little on the broad/short end of the shape spectrum to me, but within the range of expected shapes. I just posted a picture of my first (worm-chewed) ripe bhut over in my glog. I think it's at the narrow/long end of the shape spectrum, but it is typical of the red bhuts I've grown for a few years. My strain traces back to CPI, too, and you can see a picture of their bhuts here. Keep in mind, the bhut jolokia is a landrace and from what I've read, CPI takes pains to preserve the genetic diversity of the landrace. So some variability in shape is to be expected. How does it taste? From my admittedly very limited experience in eating super hots, the red bhut has a very distinctive flavor.
Thank you for the input Sawyer, very detailed information you provide which is very helpful. You ask “how does it taste?” While I have only eaten a few slivers off two pods and placenta slivers. I posted early impressions on taste along with pictures in post 1552 (Click Here). but after my second try was more like a berry VS strawberry I earlier noted with a hint of fruit flavor. For your convenience I copied and pasted it here below in italics quoted.
“First one I’ve ever tried so I’ll be adding to my notes over time like I’m doing with the White Bhut
• Measured 3” long and ¾” wide
• 52 seeds VS the White which only had 10 seeds
• This one was redish with tones of orance in it
• Rough texture, little bumps and dents
• When I cut it open I believe there was a fruit/vegetable perfume like sweetness that filled the air
• Somewhat a strawberry or berry after taste, hard to pin point but I'd love to hear others taste opinions”

Great updates Ramon! I really love your photos. Do you use a light box? They look really crisp. I am gathering the materials to build one so I can take better photos, but yours are really spot on! Looks like you area set for the trip and I hope you have a blast. Your "care package" looks like a blast! He is one lucky dude, gonna really kick him in the tail!
Thanks Matt, sometimes I use a light box but not all the time, depends on the lighting effect one wants. For example I sometimes just use a white background and do WBC or I shoot with a light diffuser. For that, I use my light box cloth which can actually shield out unwanted extra lighting. Other times I use light bouncing techniques from my 35mm days, it’s fun to experiment with different light sources and defectors but hard to beat da sun. BTW he loved the pods and for someone who had never tried powder or infused salt he’s now a convert, lol.

So true - one never knows if your plane doesn't crash land in the Andes and you have to eat your seat neighbor or the business class flight attendant.

It's so much easier if you can sprinkle a little bit of pepper flakes on a so-so triceps before digging in, isn't it?

:D

Cheers, Al

Ps: might wanna bring tooth picks as well
ROFLMAO, Al that’s funny stuff … what made you think of El Milagro de los Andes) ?

Awesome Jamie, I find this strain extremely prolific … wait to you see the size of the stalk in a few weeks, simply mind blowing.

As always thanks everyone for looking, reading and comments … have a great week!

Welcome back, Ramon!  Hope it was a fantastic trip and that you don't find mas aphids and mites!  Were the powders OK on the flight?  I've always chuckled to myself when imagining the scenario of an LEO seeing a baggie of powders, thinking they were drugs, and taking a big taste or snort of them.  :D

Looking forward to the next update!

Ok trip was great without getting into lengthy detail we visited Annapolis Naval Academy & the Botanical Gardens in DC. I didn’t do the rest of the Smithsonian, been there done that but I love to see da plant updates and found plenty of peppers blooming. Also cool to see da Titan Arum … it’s almost open.

Academy was also great, super cool. Our older son is seriously looking to attend and from everything I learned it’s best to not push him so I’ll leave it at dat and wish him da best. I do know he has it in him to do what ever he wishes, he’s way beyond a chip off da old block, lolz.

Powder and infused salt went thru fine … I was super worried that they might try to open it and soon after arrest me for carrying lethal weapons of mas destruction, lols ... but they didn’t even open my bag. Seems to me they are more concerned about what you carry on your body than in your bags. Plus I believe their focus is on guns, explosives and such but what the hell do I know or care. If I had a problem I would just resort to mail in the future and I’m sure my in-laws will soon be requesting some as we went thru almost all da salt & peppers. Although I did explain how they could make more from the JA Hab powder so they’ll probably do that and make some chili con carne. Funny how they loved everything we made with them and they were not pepper heads like us, hehehe.

Well you were right Doc Brent and I suspected as much … came home to aphids and mites on 1/2 da crop. Ant farmers planting them away on two MoA’s and a few of the JA Habs :( Been spraying the tar out of them today, so it should be back to normal in another day or two. If not I'll have to find something stronger than neem.

Finally I had a modest harvest late yesterday and here’s da goods … hope you enjoy da pics!

The other part of the harvest …

Peppers added to this are the JA Habs, Chocolate Habs (far right), Cayenne’s and Thai Hot’s

The White Bhut Ghost is quickly becoming one of my favorite peppers to eat, only wish I had more. That said the plant is now loading up with little pods so the next harvest should be better and I’ll soon have the clone in da ground as new leaves have started forming and the roots are getting longer.

I have identified another taste in this pepper and I have updated my opinion on the original post #1541 about it. In addition to what I wrote there I taste a hint of Anise and I’m loving this pepper \o/

Quoted from post 1541 "Without the picante (heat) the taste can be described similar to a clementin, tangerine or a sweet kumquat without any of the sour, rather a hint of sweetness. Possibly more like the kumquat rind which is actually the sweetest part. I wouldn’t bet my life on this description and I’ll have to eat a few more to put my finger on it ..."

Thanks, ya that white pepper is a beauty IMHO and taste great! Music tunes were great, no matter how much I listen I couldn't get thru all 40 gigs, lol. But it's always great to have a lot of variety when traveling ^_^ I'll have to shot a pic of the little sandisk and show next to a book of matches, isn't tech great!

Agreed, lols. But that said, I’d hate to waste this wonderful taste on a non pepper mon.

Love the White Bhut and Chocolate Scorpion harvest - they look amazing, truly jealous. Hopefully I'll try to find some of those seeds by the end of the season, they look amazing and from your review of the taste - might be a nice addition to the spice arsenal :)

Keep the pod pics coming

Glad you had a great trip. I haven't been to DC but theres on my bucket list. I always wanted to check out the Smithsonian and otherunique historic sites.
Wow those white Bhuts are true to the color. Mine aren't ripe yet but the only other varieties that I've grown in the past that were white are the Peruvian Bullet Habs....and they were a far cry from white.

Have a great weekend, it's almost here.....

Nice harvest! Those White Bhuts are gorgeous. They definitely blend in with the white onion!
Thanks Doc Brent, while I agree they are smexy they taste great too and that stealthy sofrito look is very cool. I’ll be making some mixed tonight, white Bhut & yellow MoA to see how those flavors combine, wish me luck ^_^

Thank you, hopefully I have some seeds later in season, for now the plant damage dat squall gave my plant it’s just not putting out pods like the first wave that didn’t have the chance to grow and ripen. While I did eat the first wave those were completely different and green and all the seeds were bad, had to toss dem :/

Thanks Greg and I think you would enjoy DC the museums are definitely worth the trip and all free FTW. Regarding the White Bhut, some get perfectly white and others have a little yellowish off white look to them but more white than any yellow. Not sure if you noticed the rust looking stain on one, not sure how that develops but that is present on many as well but every now and then you get one that looks down right smexy as all. Thanks for da starter seed on dem \o_ I’m looking forward to seeing pictures of your ripe ones soon. Hopefully later on in the year if I can get more plants going I’ll have some white powder. Have a great weekend back at ya mon!!!
