WalkGood 2013, 2014 and Beyond

This is my first Glog so excuse what ever mess I may create, lol. Took way to many pictures today (31), so Ill post the first 9 and add more in subsiquent posts but didn't think it a good idea to start out doube or triple posting just for additional pics. I will also be updating the thread over time to show growth, pods and such ... but the first few pics of are of the young ones. While Ive been growing my favorite peppers for around 17 years (guess, lol), I always limited myself to 3 varieties or less. Jamaican peppers/Hab, Jalapeño and Cayenne. When things got too tuff Id milk them till they died off and stop growing for a while and start fresh. Most years I only grew the Jamaicans which are my favorite for cooking, home made sauce and the occasional powder to rub meats with or put into certain recipes.

Current inventory:
  • 5 Jalapeño
  • 1 Cayenne
  • 1 Serrano
  • 7 Datil
  • 15 Jamaican Habs (3 large around 3 years old and 12 less than year old)
  • 12 more to be determined
The young ones below are not that old with the oldest being the JA Habs which are around 3 years old now. I happen to find THP site while looking for advice/knowledge to cure one of my Jalapeños, thanks for all the good info guys/girls! In 2012 I added Datil, Thai hot, Cayenne, Jalapeño and Serrano to the mix, totaling around 41 plants now. Hats off \o_ to those of you who grow many more, dont know how you find the time and patients when things go off. That said, Ive done my fair share of battling aphids, nematodes, snails and white fly to no end over the last 3 years. Fortunately I believe to have things under control for now so Ive decided to add 12 new peppers to the mix from the listed seeds shown below.

Ill select 12 to start near end of December or first week in January from the seeds below and give credit once I get some new ones going :)

Need to start clearing our yard to grow more & more & more peppers ;) (*WG rollseyes*)

Top left to right: two Thai Hot and one Cayenne. Bottom row all Datil. BTW I don't grow everything in clay pots, just happen to get a good deal on a bunch in yard sale for a few bucks.

Huge live Oak in background, there's 5 of them in front yard so the shades hard to avoid in first few hours of sun rise.

8 Jamaican Habs in ground and cherry tomatoe in the pot, I need to find a good place to plant the tomatoe soon.

Top left Serrano and more Datil, I'm probably going to gift a few Datils for xmass and some of the other peppers

Edit: final list copied to first post from post #40. These seeds were soaked in water on 12/31/12 and planted 1/1/13 \o/

Edit: This list is constantly being updated as new hooks pop. Even though I lost #5 :/ I will not give up as there are 2 other seeds in dat egg mon ....

I've found a picture of the last harvest of the season I made from the 7 Pod White and Fatalii White. You can clearly see the color difference and the fatalii is white as baby teeth ;)
*Picture*

Awesome harvest, Ramon. Are you polishing those pods before you take a picture
Wow they are beautiful Stefan, I really like the look of the Fatalii … can’t wait for Annie to grow them and let me try one ;) Thank you for the harvest kudos, I always wash them with a sponge and soapy water but not before all the pictures in this glog, sometimes I see the dirt on them but this time I washed the heck out of them, hehehe.

Great reviews and pod porn, Ramon! You and Patrick just put the white bhut and white fatalii on my "grow next year" list.
Thank you Annie :) I would not consider what I have said about the White Bhut Jolokia or the Red Bhut Jolokia a review because these were first tries for me ever so I like to state early impressions as to how I perceive the taste. Who knows, I might perceive other factors on subsequent tasting. That said, I really loved the White Bhut and can’t wait to pick another. If you grow the White Fatalii I’ll buy one off you next year, I would love to taste it but don’t think it will make my grow list any time soon, but who knows. Have a great week muchacha ^_^

Bounty..Brawney..Scott..Oh, what the heck....ShopTowels !

This glog has so much to absorb.....only the best will do...

Great photos of the White Bhuts, Chocolate Scorp and the Red Bhut...........which does have the Naga "fatty" look to it....hmm.
That's from my seed stock but also from someone elses. Both the Dorset Naga and the Bhut Jolokia are from different regions in India. The Red Bhut will grow upward with a conical fork and can get quite tall. I had one at 5 ft in a nursery container. The Dorset, Bombay, and Naga Morich seem to grow in a shrublike dense pattern with many lateral shoots. Once again, these opinions are only from what I've experienced in my short time of growing.............. :D

Those are good harvests. Any more at one time and you'd have to start processing or using them all in one meal...........Ouch !

Shane and his magical seeds and powders.......way to spread the "High"........+1 on the thought and consideration. There's more to it than putting the envelope in the mail........job well done !

This glog rocks ! Great reviews and opinions on the peppers, I'm sure many folks will be re-reading your info Ramon.......just to get hyped up, again !

Wow Ramon!

Gone a few days and mas pod reviews!

Great pics and nice score from PeriPeri and Shane!

I did read it all but won't comment other than to say fantastic!
Thanks Scott, I hope you guys had a wonderful time :) Your back and now I’m leaveing, lol. I should be back in a week but as you know that puts you so far behind here its like starting over. These are not reviews but first impressions, I like more mas meat to my reviews like the MoA or Choco Scorp ones but thank you for the kudos. If I can’t peg the taste right I won’t write a full review and with those two peppers it was a first taste for me, I need mas hehehe.

Greg you are too kind my friend and I always appreciate kind words from you. I am 100% positive your pack is labeled “Bhut Jolokia Red” and the labeling from the start,so I will count on your expertise to tell me otherwise. The plant is far from bushy long light green stems very thin on leaves so it’s easy to spot any bugs, wish all my plants were that easy to inspect. The White Bhut is the same or was, now after several branches gone it’s even thinner. I’m getting ready to leave town for a week so I posted pictures below of the plant and leaves to see what you think. 2 more pods have ripened on her \o/ ... pics of dem too.

Unfortunately my trip might get canceled with the development of Tropical Storm Chantal coming my way. What really sucks is that the plants will be all on their own :/ No way I can bring them in. I’ll put them up against our fence but if the oak drops wood they’re f*@&ed :(

Last update for at least a week or more unless I end up canceling and survive ~_^

Yesterdays harvest including one Scotch Bonnet JA MoA

As you can tell from this pod the shape is a C- to D :/ While I’m not sure it looks like 40% on the new pods developing are similar shape but I will be picking a solid A tonight, sorry no pics unless I’m done with all my last minute prep to leave town.

The following set of pictures (plant, flower, small pod, leaves and 2 ripe pods) are for you experts to identify what I have been calling Red Bhut Jolokia from Greg’s (PIC 1) seed. Please let me know if it’s a “not.”

Most flowers start upwards and either bend down when a little pod develops or bend down on their own.

Sorry for the bad pic here, in a rush :/

Hey Ramon,
I hope the weather takes a turn for the good so your travel plans won't get interrupted.

Sure, I agree what is labeled in the zip bag actually came from a Bhut Jolokia plant. I also have planted in the past Spanish, Bombay, Dorset and Naga Morich's. Sometimes within close prox of each other. Could it be a cross ?, possible
.
I have a few different seed sources of my Jamaican Scotch Bonnets. The plants are throwing all kinds of various shaped young pods out but I still get the Bonnet saucer shaped ones appearing and I have isolated branches in the past. Dominant and Recessive genes always have their way with the future.

Have a great week and stay  positive with the travel plans...

Here’s one of my rigs, my new one is even smaller (about the size of match book) and holds some 40 gigs of pure pleasure. If I can remember I’ll take a pic of dat little bad boy when I return.

Thanks guys for comments … have a great weekend, mine’s started early \o/

Nice Bonnet. Glad the storm abated.
I don't like to travel without peppers either, ;)
Have a blast!
Thanks Carl and I completely agree travel with hot sauce & peppers but since I’m flying they might not allow hot sauce … hopefully they won’t say anything about the powder and JA Hab salt, lol. Well I have a little time as I finished packing, so I snapped a pic of what I’m taking ^_^

Well I see you're bringing the important things :D

Pods are killa!

Once again safe trip!

And glad the storm broke up, yeah I missed it, still not caught up from my little trip..

Awesome updates as usual, Ramon.  Thought I'd throw in my 2¢ worth on the red bhut, since that's the only one I have any experience with before this year.  The plant and flowers certainly look right to me.  The pod seems a little on the broad/short end of the shape spectrum to me, but within the range of expected shapes.  I just posted a picture of my first (worm-chewed) ripe bhut over in my glog.  I think it's at the narrow/long end of the shape spectrum, but it is typical of the red bhuts I've grown for a few years.  My strain traces back to CPI, too, and you can see a picture of their bhuts here.  Keep in mind, the bhut jolokia is a landrace and from what I've read, CPI takes pains to preserve the genetic diversity of the landrace.  So some variability in shape is to be expected.  How does it taste?  From my admittedly very limited experience in eating super hots, the red bhut has a very distinctive flavor.

Great updates Ramon!  I really love your photos.  Do you use a light box? They look really crisp.  I am gathering the materials to build one so I can take better photos, but yours are really spot on!  Looks like you area set for the trip and I hope you have a blast.  Your "care package" looks like a blast!  He is one lucky dude, gonna really kick him in the tail!

Thanks Carl and I completely agree travel with hot sauce & peppers
So true - one never knows if your plane doesn't crash land in the Andes and you have to eat your seat neighbor or the business class flight attendant.

It's so much easier if you can sprinkle a little bit of pepper flakes on a so-so triceps before digging in, isn't it?

:D

Cheers, Al

Ps: might wanna bring tooth picks as well
