plant-care What's wrong with my plants?

I've notice my orange habenero keeps dropping a leaf every few days, they go yellow and fall off.

They have been watered regularly and fertilised as well. Is it too much watering?

Today I noticed my Jalapeno is looking a little sad as well, like the habenero is is regularly watered and fertilised.

Any ideas or suggestions?

Looking at The Jalapeno leaves i thought sun scald at first,But looking closer the new shoots are in good health,You can also see spotting on the leaves,How often are you Watering and adding fertilizer and how long have the plants been outside and in Dirt? :(

It's been in the ground for around 8 months. I water roughly every 2 days and fertilise every couple of weeks. This time though I used blood and bone as opposed to seasol.

Are perhaps a slight fertilizer overdose then and changing them around if there nutrient levels are very differnt can perchance have this type of affect,As for watering every 2 days does seem a lot,What are your day night temps like at the moment ? :(

My first thought was either over-watering or some needed nutrient is unbalanced. Are you able to do a NPK test?

We have had some decent rain over the last few weeks. I've no idea how to test my NPK levels.

The temps have been anywhere from 23 to 28 deg C. during the day and averaging 18 deg C at night.

Might have to water less and see if it helps.

Overwatering can certainly stunt growth, but I've never seen it cause leaves to turn a colour like that before.

More logical to be a fertiliser issue I'd say

my two cents worth...

the hab looks like it could be overwatered. it looks to be in terracotta, did you seal the pot or block the hole in the bottom? the plant may have wet feet.

the jalapeno doesn't appear to have any buds on it so the blossom drop could be as a result of over fertilising (Nitrogen is the culprit and I believe Blood and Bone is high in N) and could explain the burnt look of the leaves. the plants aren't necessarily suffering from the same issue, anyway, the effects appear different. one looks burnt, the other is dropping the odd leaf here and there.

The hab's overwatered

The only thing over the drain hole is a piece of bosai mesh to stop the potting medium coming out. I might check it out and see if it's causing any problems.

I will give it less water and see how it goes, I thought it would need a fair bit of watering being in potting mix.

I don't think we've had enough really hot days to burn the plant, I could be wrong though. Maybe the change of fertiliser has freaked it out as well.

Thanks for the input gents.

Any time when leafs turn yellow & fall off means that plant need Potassium & Phosphorus, if flowers fall off that means plant have to much Nitrogen. Also if you over fertilize leafs will curl.Never fererlize to many times only when plant mature even than every two weeks or ones a month. When start from seeds stay away of soking seeds in any fertilizer, only if you have C.Pubescens or wild variety seeds you can soke
in Hydrogen Peroxide that will soft in up the hard seeds will speed up germination rate.

I liquid fertilise my plants with thrive once a monthwhen starting out and flowering then i go to 2 times a month when the fruit starts.

Also at this time of year (If you get no rain) you should only look at watering every 3 - 4 days. In the peak of summer and in full sun I will water a small amount every day. You know when the chilli plant needs water cause the leaf stay green but go soft and wrinkle up. It is good to stress chillis as they grow better and hotter fruit...

Leaves will also fall off from lack of nitrogen. This will cause an overall pale green followed by yellowing of the whole plant.

But fertilizer burn or pH deficiency is my guess for the jalapeno, & the habanero looks like its bordering on too much fertilizer. Look at how dark green the leaves that aren't messed up are. Also explain any flower drop. They're definitely not lacking in N.

Blood meal is easy to burn plants with too, even though it's not a chemical fertilizer. Check it: "Blood meal is dried, powdered blood used as a high-nitrogen fertilizer. It is one of the highest non-synthetic sources of nitrogen and if over-applied it can burn plants with excessive ammonia. Blood meal is completely soluble and can be mixed with water to be used as a liquid fertilizer. It usually comes from cattle as a slaughterhouse by-product. It can be spread on gardens to deter animals such as rabbits,[1][2] or as a compost activator. It may also be used as an animal food supplement.[3]" -

My suggestion is to let the plants dry out, then flush the pots by watering til water runs out the bottom and letting it run for a while to remove the excess nutes.

just a guess though

I was using seasol every two weeks, and since i had some blood and bone thought I'd give it a go. Probably wasn't a good idea.

We have been getting some fairly regular rain/showers, so i have been avaoiding watering while I think it's still damp soil. I'll keep an eye on mu plants for what you've said.

I never knew that, thanks for a cool tip.

I'll give it a go, we had more showers overnight so I haven't had a chance to check them today.
