Amazing effort Gary!  On your back for that perfect shot!  Sweet!  Very impressive overall and just sickening Birgit's!  :drooling:

Thanks Mike! I think there will be several such Birgit's plants on THP before long...It's really easy to grow, and some of the other growers have some amazing plants right now.

How many bags are you going through gary?

Wow, dude, I was just typing a caption for a pik I was about to post for you...

That's a real good question...I just constructed a 6-plant section of bed in the country garden, and I saved all the bags so I would know how many to buy for the next section, but I haven't counted them yet...But I can give you a pretty good idea...And bear in mind that my soil has A LOT of clay, so I use way more RCW than I would in a well-drained sand garden...I'm guessing I used 20 or so bags to do the amendment, then another 12 or so bags to do the mulch layer...These are really big, wide, tall beds...If you have soil that drains well you don't even need to build raised beds, so for 6 plants spaced 3 feet apart you might get away with just 8 or 10 bags total...

What follows is the post I was typing when you posted just then...

This pik is for Noah, who asked for a photo of my mature RCW-and-clay soil...This is my "pilot bed," which has remained undisturbed since the second time I built it out, in 2011. The native sediment at this location is dark brown alluvial clay, with very little silt and a tiny amount of fine-grained sand that the builders brought in when the house was constructed. I built this bed very much the same way I'm doing it now, except that I used a nice layer of actual pecan branches from the tree in my yard to build the first layer...

The hole you see here is where the birds have been digging for earthworms...Every day when I get home there are several of these excavations I have to repair:

This Seven Pot Yellow (THSC) is growing in the above bed:

GORGEOUS!!! Give me a bit and I'll type up a better reply when not on my phone.
I have shitty red clay here in East TN.  Like super shitty.  If its dry a pick axe can barely get through and if its wet you have 40lbs coming inside with you on your shoes.  That is what my soil looks like now with using woodchips/brush.  The worms are amazingly abundant and the plants cannot get enough of it.  But, damn dude that is a lot of bags of mulch.  You can pay me that much and I will bring you fresh oak and maple RCW every spring :)  Awesome stuff Gary!!

Thanks Noah!

Folks that live around here where the Wilcox Formation is on the surface have the very same type of red clay you describe. I've had it ball up on my boots until I was at least a foot taller...If you dig a hole in the ground and put a plant in it, it's the same as setting it in a stone pot with no drain hole!

You're right....That's an insane amount of bagged mulch to be paying for...and not a very smart way at all to be doing this, especially if I'm evangelizing for the RCW thing....This afternoon I'm buying a tarp and some bungee straps, going down to the landscape supplier, and filling up the bed of my pickup with their hardwood chips...

I'll report back here....

Gary

Love THSC yellow 7s. .... One of my favourites .... That soil looks great ... Could be straight from a virgin forest floor ... Nice work

Thanks Trippa! You said what I love to hear about my soil!

I'm with you that the THSC Y7 is a crazy great plant, and an unbelievable chile...I originally ordered those seeds because Neil said on his web site that they would grow to 10 feet in-ground...I never managed to get them out of containers last year, but this year I'm giving them every chance.

I agree on the "Hippy Yellow" .......that's a wonderful tasting pepper. I remember last year deseeding some of those pods at the patio table outside. The aroma filled the yard !

Lol....That's just what I call them, Greg!...Sounds like something they were passing around at the '69 Woodstock Festival.... :P

This pik of one of my Doux Tres Long plants is for meatfreak—Pods are ripening, all the while flowers and fruit continue to set...

Thanks guys! We just need to go in together on some nice river bottom land like that...and the tractor and the other stuff...

Well, maybe we should start with a smaller tract of land, and  maybe a smaller tractor, too... There would still be plenty of room for chiles...and other stuff...
