Windchicken 2013

Finally got me some lights and a heat mat...

The trays are the self-watering Burpee 32-cell type..Hopefully they will maintain more consistent moisture levels.

This is what I sowed:

C. chinense
MoA Scotch Bonnet (STEVE954), 6
Madame Jeanette (Meatfreak), 6
Bahamian Goat (FadeToBlack), 6
NagaBrain (romy6), 8
Trinidad Scorpion, 4
7 Pot Yellow, 8
Cumari do Para (capsidadburn), 8
Bonda ma Jacques x 7 Pot Yellow (Spicegeist), 4
Chupetinha, 4

C. annuum
Doux Tres Long des Landes (Meatfreak), 6
Poblano, 8
Zapotec Jalapeño, 12
Chiltepin, 8
California Wonder, 4
Chilhuacle Rojo, 8
Thai Garden Birdseed, 4
Ashe County Pimento (kentishman), 4
Kitchen Pepper (Datil), 4

C. baccatum
Aji Amarillo, 8

There are a few spots still open. Probably will sow NuMex 6-4 and some Morouga, because people are asking for it....

Thanks for your wise words, Mike...Probably the thick walls are, as you say, the result of the pod's growing smaller than its mates, and not to a unique genome or anything like that...This plant, in temperate weather, normally sets large pods...I'll go ahead and save the seeds from this pod, but I'm much less enthusiastic about it than I was when I first cut it open earlier today...

I have plenty of seeds from this plant, harvested from nice large pods...If you would like to help me with the F3 grow that would be awesome!

I received the below cover-shot-grade pods from Erin (P. Dreadie) this morning. Just absolutely beautiful—I didn't even know that Scotch Bonnet could grow so large. I really admire a guy who only grows a few good, solid varieties, but tends to them with such care and skill....I always think I'm going to do that every year, but then other things begin to catch my eye...

Thanks so much Erin! You are truly a master grower!

Windchicken ... I know you're a kind gent , that's why we like you .  But you stated "You didn't know a SB would give pods that big "  More or less .... I'm not sure what all SB's you grow. I know you have the MoA . I have the Select , TFM came in this year , and the MoA. Papa Joes .. no luck this time . I also grow CCN Yellow Bonnets . The first three gave me large pods . All very close in size .( CNN gave me smaller fruit again.) Close enough in my Glog I wanted to see other's TFM .

So after all that ... and finding a rest stop along the road ... my question is ... Aren't your SB's close in size ? To me the taste / aroma is the most important thing with SB's , but lager pods and sexy looking ones with spikes 'n' tails make me happy .

Peace

Gorgeous pods Gary! Man those SB are spiky!

Thanks Noah! And thanks for stopping by!

Those spiky yellow pods look great. How do they compare to Y7?

Thanks Charles! Erin is a skilled grower, to be sure.

The heat level of the SB Select is excellent, in the 300-400K SHU range, I would say. What I was struck by was the thick flesh and the juicy crunchiness of the fruit. The flavor and aroma are intense, yet refined—the classic S.B. profile. This is a Caribbean pepper with authority and presence, yet confident enough in its character that it would rather party with you than kick your ass...A true Rasta pepper.

Gary ... don't just "like" ... answer we question please.

Dude, that was a sincere statement...I truly have never seen a Bonnet that freakin' huge! Besides the MoA, I have grown only Peppermania's "Jamaican Scotch Bonnet" and "Foodarama Scotch Bonnet", the latter of which I strongly suspect is actually a yellow version of Congo Pepper. My MoAs are currently recovering from the extreme heat and aridity of the late summer...Although the flavor is excellent, the few pods I've harvested were tiny. Hopefully I'll have some large ones in a few weeks.

Hey, Gary, just wanted to stop by and say howdy.
I'd love to get in on that F3 grow - how many
plants would I need to grow out to satisfy the project?

Glad the weather has finally turned in your favor - this
time of year, the weather can do strange things, at least
in our area!

Hope your season ends with a flourish of awesome pods!

Oh you will, I've seen quite a turn around since we dropped into the mid 80's to low 90's.

Have a great week!

Thanks Scott! You got super hots now? My Yellow 7s and NagaBrains are just now setting some nice-sized green pods...Still waiting on the Rennies...

Thanks for stopping by Paul...It's good to hear from ya!

Your helping with the F3 NagaBrain grow would be great...I'm excited to see whose mad skills will produce the mother plant for the F4 grow! The more plants you can grow out, the more we will have to choose from, but I know everyone has space constraints. Probably you would need 3 or 4 plants to make it worth your time. I'll get you some seeds out the next time I send seeds out. You want in on the F3 grow of Spicegeist's Bonda Ma Jacques x 7 Pot Yellow too?

Every day when I check my Peruvian Market Aji I think about you, and just yesterday one of the pods turned completely yellow! Man, I'm excited to taste this baby:

Everything is podding up, some are loading up too! Flowers are everywhere.

I'm sure you got the cool front this weekend, it's a bonus! They forecast 90's but we're actually getting 4° or 5° cooler weather, and the heat is short lived.

Good luck!

And have a great week!

Loving the looks of that Aji! Let me know about the taste and save some seeds Gary!

Thanks Dan! You got it!

It was really, really nice—my new favorite baccatum—no other aji I've had comes close to this one. Amazingly thick walls and huge, juicy crunch. Really juicy and really crunchy. Same exquisitely balanced flavor and heat level as Peppermania's larger Aji Amarillo. But this plant is actually setting fruit, while the larger Peppermania plants are only just now beginning to set blossoms. Man, I can't wait to grow a stand of these next season.

Same address for seeds?

Man, that sounds great Scott! We growers down here in the blast furnace climate earned this weather!

LOL! Yes sir, same address. Let me know what I can send you in return!

Cool, thanks! Will do.

Looks good Gary, even down here we are getting a little relief from the heat.

Thanks Rodney! Glad to hear you're getting a break in the valley. I'm checking my Rennies every day. Only one blossom so far, but it shouldn't be much longer....

My new neighbor was admiring my 3-year-old Black Prince (At the time I bought the seeds and started this plant the CPI was marketing it as "Black Cuban"…so is it still a BC or is it a BP?). Anyway, I gave him the plant. A couple days later he painted this picture of it:

I said "Dude I know some guys that would probably pay you to paint pod porn of their plants" (alliteration not intended  :P ). He said to go ahead and post this pik and tell the THP members his services are available….
