Windchicken Grow 2012

Looks like I'm getting a late start again this year...Should be setting seeds to sprout in the next few days....Anyway, here's the order I made from Beth this morning. It's not really my complete grow list, because I'm planting lots of saved seeds (from my 2011 Grow and from trades with my THP friends) for the first time this year. Also, I don't know that I will plant everything from this order, but I am excited about some of the new varieties:

Peppermania%205Jan2012.jpg

Absent from the above list but going in the ground this year:
Trinidad Scorpion
Congo Trinidad
True Jamaican Scotch Bonnet
Thai Chile (Garden Bird Seed variety)
Nambe Pueblo
Birgit's Locoto

Several bird types from THP friends, including, but not limited to (because I can't remember them all right now):
Texas Chiltepin
Prik Ki Nue
Siling Labuyo
Cumari do Para

Edited 1/9/2012 to add the following:

Last minute order from Hippy, plus some other trades I had forgotten about:
Yellow 7 Pot
Douglah
Malagueta
Pusa Jwala

Thanks TabascoKilla! If you need some Birgit's pods PM me your mailing address...

Thanks Firditra! Yeah, the Bonda is a truly awesome chile...It should be way more popular than it is right now. Did you plant yet? One of the Bonda plants is insanely productive—I'll be sure you get some seeds.

Of my 10 plants which came from a packet labelled "Foodarama Scotch Bonnet", at least 2 are producing the pods pictured below. Maybe they're Scotch Bonnets, I don't know, but I'm anxious to taste one in a few minutes....

Thanks Rodney and Jamie!

Garden pix soon, Rodney...probably tomorrow.

I ate one of these big pods at lunch, guys...well, tried to eat one—got about 3/4 of the way through it before I had to stop. They are SPICY! Way hotter than True Jamaican, especially the early season True Jamaicans. Same excellent flavor and aroma as the TJSB, however, with thinner skin. Very, very nice, and definitely a keeper.

Jamie, I'm beginning to get yellow pods on the plants from your Yellow 7 seeds—I'm getting excited to try one! By the way, one of them is producing red pods, that look very much like the regular Red 7s on Hippy's web site. So I'm excited about that too, and more than a little scared, in case it would be a Barrackpore or a Brain. (As I type this my stomach is saying "Oh please dear God not that again!") Photos tomorrow.

I have a few of these going too... what I want to know is: are they Cardi Yellow? I haven't grown cardis before, so I wouldn't know what to compare... although I do have one in the garden, but haven't looked for pods yet, so maybe they'll be similar or different enough to tell... I'll post pics of my "stinger bonnets" {I guess that name doesn't apply here though) when they ripen...

Wow that is  I can't wait to se some pics of them. Either way you no they are gonna get ya good in the morning

I chickened out and ate a Bonda for breakfast...Your chiles have made me gun shy! I will nut up and try one this evening for sure. Pix are below...

After talking to AJ, I'm 99% certain that these are, in fact, the Foodarama variety of Scotch Bonnet. I bought the seeds from Beth Boyd (Peppermania), who collected the seeds herself from chiles bought at the Foodarama Grocery Store in Houston. I'm looking forward to the pix of your "Stinger Bonnets," which I believe we've decided are actually Cardi Yellow Scorpions?

Foodarama Scotch Bonnet or not, Gary. They do look tasty! Like AJ already said there's always some podshape variation.

Thanks, Stefan!

Some pod pix this Saturday morning early:

Bonda ma Jacques, seeds from Spicegeist. There are 5 plants, but this is the crazy productive one from which I will collect seeds. An extremely tasty, very spicy chile:

An unknown chile, from a packet of seeds sent to me by romy6 labeled "Yellow 7 Pot." I am frightened of these:

These are the other pods on the aforementioned plant. Jamie...what the heck is this...Should I be very afraid?:

Wow Gary that does look just like a brain. And your yellow 7's look very wicked indeed  . You sure know how to grow em my man!

Have a great weekend and let me know when you eat that mystery brain. :onfire:

Wow, that's some beautiful plants Gary. Each of them is literally packed with pods  and look at the size of those stems :) How's it going with the overwintered trunks that started too sprout again? Any progress there?

Sorry I've been away so long, Gary - your grow is lookin' just awesome - pod heaven!
It's great to see your pics of some of the same plants I have, although I feel I'm about
two months behind you! I'll hold these images in my mind as I wait for the plants to
start producing!

Good growin' out your way!

Thanks, Jamie! I had 1/3 of the Mystery Brain yesterday morning, and another 1/3 in my grits again this morning...NICE! The "inner lining" of capsaicin is quite thick, with so much oil that it made a little puddle on the cutting board. Flavor and aroma are excellent. I believe 1/3 of a large pod, after the main placenta is removed, is the "just right" manageable amount for me. Thanks for that dude! Now I know how to eat them...

Wow your plants are so nice and healthy Gary. I wish I had the amount of space you have there.

Thanks Brent! I believe one day you will.

Thanks Stefan! The volunteer overwinters are doing very well. Photos soon.

I have so many Guampinha plants, in fact, that it has thrown off my gardening plans. They weren't supposed to be there!

Holy shit man! Those aji umbas are something I've never seen, please enlighten me. Those pods look fantastic.

Thanks Jamison! Aji Umba is a C. chinense variety from Surinam, a.k.a. Dutch Guiana. Apparently there are two varieties of the Aji Umba, a yellow, more elongated one, and a red, blocky one, like I have in my garden. Meatfreak tells me that the yellow variety is far more common in the Netherlands.

The plants of the red Aji Umba, which I sprouted from seeds purchased from Peppermania, are the fastest-growing chinense that I have seen, maybe even faster than Trinidad Scorpion. The pods are quite large and look almost exactly like Congo Trinidad. As you can see, they are probably more productive than the Congo chile, which is itself a very productive plant. The flavor, however, is way different: not so pungent and dense as the Congo; it reminds me more of an Andean style chinense rather than the Caribbean types most chileheads are accustomed to. However, to be honest, I don't think they have reached their ultimate flavor profile yet.

Sorry I've been away so long, Gary - your grow is lookin' just awesome - pod heaven!

Those pods are gnarly. Those do look like Romys brains. Ouch. What was The source of your FDA SB. I was looking at a Midwestchili site and saw they had them. PB. Where's the jelly?! Hahha. You are the one that puts congos on his grits

Denniz

Thanks Denniz! The Foodaramas came from Peppermania.
Yeah, I'm that guy...PB-and-Brains is a great way to start the day!

I just took some pix of my in-ground overwinters, as promised:
