Yellow 7 ripening question

They are pretty....

Could that be a mutation? Seriously....save the seeds and see if they grow true because those are some gorgeous chilies!

Thanks guys, I am a little annoyed they're not yellow, but the pods are still beauties and they taste great too. I tasted the pod I cut open and it was delicious, I want to say it was like orange rinds, but I feel I am being swayed in my judgement by the color. I have at least one pod growing from an isolated flower, possibly two others at this point. The isolated pod is already growing into the mushroom shape in the pics. Now to see if all the pods ripen orange.

If anyone out there is having this same issue... Orange 7 when it's supposed to be Yellow 7, let me know. Since this is my first time growing this, I'm wondering if maybe my expectations for "yellow" were misguided. But those things are definitely orange aren't they?

Looking at all the pictures posted here I'm starting to wonder if my yellow 7 is really what its supposed to be.

My pods look sure look very different...

If it's of any consolation, true Fatalii's I'm told/I've read are supposed to be yellow as well, but mine are definately orange. A quick google image search will produce almost an even split of Pods that are true yellow or various shades of orange. What all that means, I really couldn't say, but the peppers taste amazing so I'm definately not complaining.

My two cents...

That's how I'm feeling too... If they grow orange next year too, I'll just call them Orange 7s

Harvested some more orange-yellow pods, sliced them up and put them on pizza tonight, quite delicious. Also fed some to a neighbor and his [grown] son, I asked them to describe the taste and they responded that it was unlike anything they've had before. So it really seems like a Yellow 7, just more orange. Now I'll just have to find some actually yellow 7 pods to grow next year in addition to this one.

I'll bet they're delicious. I still can't get over how cool they look. There's definately no yellow there! ; )

Something very strange is happening. The green pods in my pics above that look like mushrooms are turning Yellow! The other oddly shaped pods turn orange. This on the same plant! I'll take pics once I get a chance to visit my peppers later today or tomorrow.

Seems like you may have had some early freaks - that's quite common. You see that especially with weird pod shapes. Now, after the plant has straightened itself out, you're seeing the real pods. I haven't had one Chinense of any type ripen yet. A few of my Yellow Scorpions are just starting to turn now.

This is very nice to hear. I will be very happy if they continue down a yellow path...

But then I saw another one going orange:

And one of the last oddly shaped first few, orange as the others, but yellowish on the other side:

What I notice with these is if you pick them when you first see some color change, say at about 50% green, it will ripen more yellow than orange.

I'm growing 3 different varieties of Yellow 7s. 2/3 have gone orange, this is my last hope for yellow this season, yet to ripen, here are what the pods look like:

Here is the first mature pod of the stable fruit shape on this plant, and it's close enough to yellow, the small runts and oddly shaped first pods in the beginning seemed to get a deeper coloring, closer to orange than this, though somehow these images do look oranger than it appears to the naked eye:

At any rate, it's still a beautiful, relatively early maturing, very hot and flavorful pepper. A keeper.

That looks awsome! I've noticed an orangish tinge on the yellow 7's I ordered from PRF. Maybe they're so yellow that they're orange. : P

I let this one ripen on the plant, if I would have picked it earlier (like half green) it would look more yellow. Maybe calling it the "Orange and Yellow 7 Pod" would work. As if these names couldn't get even catchier!

That's weird, I also just received some yellow 7 pods from cappy and they are bright bright yellow. They look like a giant glowing lemon head. I'm definately interested in those weird ones and would love to get some of those seeds off of you if your willing(trade or whatever you would be willing to do). Those are beautiful, mean looking pods though, good job.
