"A stalk of the newfound fungus species Ophiocordyceps camponoti-balzani, grows out of a "zombie" ant's head in a Brazilian rain forest.

Originally thought to be a single species, called Ophiocordyceps unilateralis, the fungus is actually four distinct species—all of which can "mind control" ants—scientists announced Wednesday. "

it killed the ant and the spore are waiting to spread. and does not effect ants only now. its evolving wasp and crickets all fall prey to this fungus.

Crickets too can fall prey to zombie fungi (as pictured), though little is known about the fungus species that brought this insect to its horrific end.
this was released by national Geographic...i guess its not a prank....link to national geografic page.

did you have a question in all this...this is one subject i can not offer input on. that is some nasty looking shit... send the crap my way, let's see how it likes -40C that will shrivel its little fungus balls.

that poor cricket...alien-fied, just completely engulfed.....by fungus. shit!

One or more of these fungi are from the Cordyceps genera of fungi, and oddly enough, what is bad news for the insects, actually is used in the health food industry for humans.

In Tibet, a Cordyceps species that preys on caterpillars and known by the locals there as "yartsa gompo" is harvested for medicinal purposes. It sells for around $80.00 per gram, making this fungus worth almost twice it's weight in gold.

Now the Cordyceps fungi is being cultivated in Carson City, Nevada by Aloha Medicinals at a monthly rate of in excess of 175,000 kilograms at their new facility there.

Here is a short video clip with Sir David Attenborough showing the Cordyceps fungi doing it's stuff on hapless insect prey.

BC, next time you're at your local library, check out a copy of "Parasite Rex", Carl Zimmer's excellent book on the subject of parasites that contol their hosts.

This book makes for some great late night reading that will definitely give you the heebie-jeebies and make you wish you never knew what organisms are patiently lurking and waiting to hook up with their next innocent and unsuspecting host.

In Traditional Chinese medicine, Cordyceps is believed to strengthen the "Qi" or the vital energy that flows through the body, therefore boosting the body’s resistance to illness. Cordyceps is said to help regulate the respiratory system, and is believed to especially beneficial to the lungs, treating colds, coughs, shortness of breath, and childhood asthma. It’s also traditionally used to combat night sweats and aches and pains. And traditional wisdom holds that Cordyceps increases vitality in men.
they are actually selling this everywhere here..did not know that these are also a mind controlling fungus.

i thought it was a type of herbs. seem them also ...now i know they are dried catepillars!! i thought they were some roots...

I have to agree Srin2, it was eerie and unsettling to watch that fungal fruiting body grow out of the zombie ant's brain.

Were you thinking of buying some of that Cordyceps health food product and trying it out?

when my wife delivered my first child.. she got many bottles of brand's chicken essence of many mixtures. i am wondering if she got the one's with Cordyceps because whatever she does not like the smell..goes down my throat. hehe

Pretty cool stuff. On an interesting side note it has been discovered that the fungi are actual genus or species specific, ir they target and evolve with certain insects. Pretty intense as that suggests that it has not evolved randomly (like from allopatric or sympatric).

EDIT:

Lol, just watched the linked vid, already mentioned there. Kudos for that one, had not seen that yet.

found the picture of the codyceps & caterpillars dried.

So THAT is what attaches to a kids brain when they become teenagers!

If I ever find a bug with that on it I'm burning my whole yard, serious :hell:

hehe yesterday i was at a pharmacy to buy some gastric meds. i saw this codyceps capsules sold there. i was looking at it and a pharmacy assistant came to me and told me that this is good and she is also taking for her asthma. i ask her one question. " do you know what is that ?? " she told me its some Chinese herbs. then i told her look at this picture in their brochure. its actually dried caterpillars with fungus jetting out its head. you all should have seen her face.!!! i think she almost puked. After that i got to jump Que on the payment counter, she told me not to wait for my turn, i just paid her and left. :) hahahaha

So people actually ingest that crap? It's amazing how naive and gullible people can be at times. Until it's approved by the FDA and is actually scientifically proven to do anything why in the world would anyone pay for something like that. It's bad enough the lady had no clue what she was taking, but to work in a pharmacy and practice witchcraft as a medicine is just plan stupid.

I think i'm gonna shave my butt hair then bottle and sell them as an "ancient Chinese herb" that will increase your man hood ;)

theres somethings that are not FDA approved for their claim but those things still do what they claim....not talking about the stuff being talked about in this thread.

as for your butthair  I think it might turn someone gay instead of increasing their manhood

 butt hair..

i am wondering how the chinese find all this werid stuff's as medicine.. ?? this codyceps have been used by the chinese for 3000 years. do they eat every single thing they find ?? and test it for any medicine value ?
mind boggling!.
" eat crocodile penis to get your's stronger!" hahaha

Don't forget. There are body counts attached to several prescription medications that the FDA approved. They usually then follow up with the routine "The FDA regrets the loss of life due to the prescription drug blah blah blah..."

Fungi are actually closer related to animals than they are to plants.

I'm not saying all ethnic traditional medicines are great, but many of the current medications people use today come from what were once labeled as "witch doctor" medicine. Aspirin is one. Salicylic acid is the active component in aspirin, which is also the active component in willow bark. Old Native American remedy. All the Oxycontin and Vicodin? Opiods. That is, synthetic opium. Opium is a traditional medicine from long ago. We still use it, but we call it Morphine now. Ok, how about Capsaicin? A traditional ethnic medicine for ages. Anyone here dispute that? The medical establishment doesn't know everything. If they did, they wouldn't be scouring the planet researching various ethnic traditional medicines so they can bring them back and synthesize them.
