    Squirrel problem

I lost probably 70 lbs or so of Roma tomatoes to squirrels last summer - shooting with a BB gun was impractical (too many, didn't want to sit around waiting for them all day), and did not want to try poison. Solved the problem by using some protective mesh from Lowes. Had to create a simple...

For those that grow multiple varieties

I disagree about the risk of cross pollination - if the plants are in the same house, and air circulates throughout, there is a risk. If you want to propagate, trying cloning. It's no more effort than trying to prevent cross pollination.

    Moruga Trinidad Scorpion comments, please?!

I can't recall. I swap out my avatar every few posts. The pods in the bowl above have been dried in a food dehydrator. I've got another bowl I'm going to use to make a sauce. Specifically, an authentic (though nuclear hot) western North Carolina style barbecue sauce.

    Moruga Trinidad Scorpion comments, please?!

Yeah, yeah. I taste tested a tiny sliver and they are definitely nuclear. Simply touching the inside of one with your fingertip then touching your tongue is enough to bring the pain.

    Moruga Trinidad Scorpion comments, please?!

Just harvested these today from about a half-dozen plants. This is the first time I've ever grown these (or even seem them in person), so someone please tell me how these look. These are the largest and most mature; there is probably another bowl worth of smaller ones (maybe half or less the...

    vendor Pepper Joe

Following up on a post I made to this thread a few months ago... The Moruga Trinidad Scorpion seeds I bought from Pepper Joe have grown and begun producing pods. Germination rates were very good and plants appear to be what they're supposed to be. Below is a picture of what I harvested a...

shopping looking to buy LED light, opinions?

You've got to pick a unit of comparison and stick with it. If you're doing a watt to watt comparison I seriously doubt you could beat LED's with any commercial grow light I've heard of. If you're comparing dollar to dollar, which to me is more representative of how most people make purchase...

shopping looking to buy LED light, opinions?

The cost thing is what I keep going back and forth on. LED fixtures have dropped in price, but so have HID's and florescents. .From a straight technical perspective I have no doubt that LEDs offer a more efficient lighting solution per unit of energy consumed, but right now the initial cost is...

shopping looking to buy LED light, opinions?

That's a good question. IMO, I think the best comparison would be based on price. You would need to find an LED fixture or set of fixtures that totaled in the ballpark to the cost of the 8 x T5 fixture. You should probably figure in the relative cost of electricity and maintenance over a...

chinense carolina reaper almost 2 months later

What documentation are you looking for? They released the Winthrop Univ. report a couple of months ago. The methodology used by the Guinness Book of World records is designed to reward outliers, and doesn't necessarily say anything about the heat consistency of a strain. It is almost a...

pests Aphids Returning. F my life.

Pyrethrin-based sprays are the way to go - spray all plant surfaces top and bottom. It's effective on a wide variety of insects. I've never had a lot of luck with neem oil or neem-based products.

How high above the plant canopy are you keeping your fixture? From the pix it looks like it could be 3 feet or more. Also, the 5 watt LED's can generate some heat - much more so than the 1 to 3 watt ones. I know the Solar Flare itself has a built-in cooling fan - is heat an issue in your...

shopping looking to buy LED light, opinions?

Yes. Without question, LEDs are a viable light source for growing pepper plants indoors. To me, this is by far the biggest question. In my opinion (take it for what it's worth), at the present point in time LED's are on the verge of being more cost effective, but may not quite be there...

shopping looking to buy LED light, opinions?

Smokemaster - This is slightly off topic, but what are your thoughts on higher-power LED's vs. lower power ones? In other words, is it better to invest in a smaller number of say 3 watt LEDs or a larger number of lower power ones?

    seeds HP22B Germination ??

I just had another one sprout - at about five weeks. That makes 4 of 10. The variability seems odd. It will be interesting to see what sort of variations people end up with in plants over the next several months.
