Amir's 2014 rookie year

Hi All,

I have to start by saying that I am really enjoying this forum, the knowledge and general atmoshphere is great
The combination of growing info + hot food is awsome.

Going over threads here I got my mind set on a few varieties and made my first order from pepper Joe.
ordered myself:

CAROLINA REAPER PEPPER AKA HP22B

BUTCH "T" TRINIDAD SCORPION

CHOCOLATE HABANERO

CORNO DI TORO

Figured it's a nice start for my rookie year.
Well... time passed by, i was reading more and more and all of a sudden i felt my order was inadequate.
So i sent a mail to Peter at La Semillas and ordered myself:

7pot Primo
7pot Brainstrain Yellow
Jalapeño
Foodorama Scotch Bonnet
Scotch Bonnet Brown

Peter shipped extremly fast (i got the seeds within a few days) and that really spiked my appetite, plus the seeds from PJ did not arrive yet, so i went online again and ordered:

7pot Brainstrain Red
Naga Viper
7pot Barrackpore

I personally come with no knowledge, but my wife's family is in the growing business.  They have a wholesale nursery (meaning they grow flowering pots of both perrenials and annuals and sell to other nurseries) so I'm using their knowledge and facility to give my seedlings a good start.

Feb 14th

I had my boys and nephew  fill the trays with seeding mix
01c_zps214f1aaf.jpg

I was counting on them to help with the seeding process, but two took off immediatly.
My oldest (8) did a whole tray by himself.  the rest were done by brother in law
In fact i had my brother in law deal with the growing bit while i was busy labeling and taking pictures.
Here he is spreading vermiculite over the seeds

Give them good watering, and into a humidity controled room.  Covered for the first couple of days and then left uncovered for another few days

After a few days, moved it into the Seed starting area

March 1st, seeds are popping

Overall I'm geting great germination, some are still not showing up (Fatalii is giving me problems)

March 13

I think i'll transplant them over the weekend into 4" pots.

I'm not sure which this is, but i had a go at it today.  nice flavor with a little heat.  this will probably be great for pickling

Cho

Chocolate Hab, first to pod nicely.  All 6 plants are showing nice fruit.
IMG_0652_zps394825d1.jpg

The first pic looks like a white 7 pot and your chocolate hab is very translucent/light/peachy colored. It looks nothing like mine. My chocolate hab/brown congo has very dark green colored pods. Your plants look very nice and healthy.

Wow looking at the other Glogs it looks like I'm about a month behind everyone.
A bit green with all the ripe pods out there....
Over here I am getting ready for the next move.
Neighbor has agreed to lend me his "Hoop house", so i now have a place to host my peppers.
IMG_6762_zpsca4d08b9.jpg

Ground is crap, and it's a loan so i'll do it all in containers.
I've already recieved my potting mix
IMG_6774_zps49a6b040.jpg

The wooden crates on the left should give a proportion of the size...  if i got the conversions right, that is 160 cubic feet of mix.
I chose (with the assistance of the guy at the company doing the mixes) a peat moss lava rock mix.
It's meant to be good, a bit heavy but that is not a factor for me.  Easy on the roots and great in water retention.

Looks and feels nice

IMG_6776_zps767b4e83.jpg

I should be getting my pots early next week, I ordered 150 4 gallons pots, and 50 5 gallon pots.  It's going to be a lot of fun filling them up.
Peppers are definitly ready.
I've had this little fetish to do a top shot of nice healthy peppers since i've started.  Next on the list is a ripening pod, to be followed by a massive harvest shot. knock on wood

IMG_6769_zps26597a66.jpg

Figured i'd also do a few of the plants surrounding the peppers in the nursery.

Got to love verbenas.  nice flower, strong plant.
IMG_6777_zps1e2b0bc7.jpg

But the plant i chose to focus on is New Guinea Impatiens, under rated in my opinion.

Till next time, thanks for dropping by

This pic reminded me of the month before Mothers Day over here. All the hanging baskets and plants that had to be moved so they could get to the big box stores and other places to sell them.Moms day made or broke the year, cold weather always put the breaks on people buying plants for the yard.

Looks like a hot wax variety, def no 7 pod

Maybe santa fe grande?
I think you've hit it.  I remembered I started a few Santa Fe Grande and had problems labeling the sweet and mild peppers (problem = i got lazy)
Thanks for the ID

Fortunatly the business here does not rely on a Single day, but it is as seasonal as can be, and the weather in combination with the holiday season timing will determine if it's a good year or not.  Having said that, the price of cyclamens will drop by almost 30% if there is no rain in December

That top pic looks just like my Santa Fe grande. Tastes very mild too

I slowly get the feeling i am in way over my head with the heat that i am growing.
to me the pepper has heat, not mild but  heat.   definitly more heat then the Thai which is ranked way hotter.

Interesting grow Amir! Glad I checked it out. Will be following along. You have some great resources at your disposal.

Happy growin!

Thanks, I am happy to have visitors.
A bit of stating the obvious, but having your grow in a professional nursery makes things alot easier.
I did a bit of a scan through my pictures and i have shots of them growing ornamental peppers from 2012, and they have been doing it for a few years then.
I thought i'd share a few images

While watering today i realized i have enought for my first pod porn collection.

First an overall shot, it's been a week since the plants recieved nutes for the first time and there is already a significant a;mount of new growth.  I gave them nutes again today and will probably settle on a weekly every 10 day routine.

A bit of color on this one , but no heat...  it was labeled bishop's crown but it is definitly not.
IMG_6897_zps91d45a22.jpg

This is a bishop's crown
IMG_6898_zps6ac9cebf.jpg

This thai is packed with little tasty hot pods

IMG_6899_zps96878f88.jpg

This fatalii has the most pods by far, all the others have only one or two so far
IMG_6907_zps1a5d3ba3.jpg

But this Fatalii is by far the biggest (or it's anothe mislabeling)

This doesn't look like a reaper, but it sure looks nasty

IMG_6909_zps9623f056.jpg

Cool, a stinger

IMG_6911_zpsd6467660.jpg

They all look great.A controlled grow like yours is hard to beat. But like us outdoor growers, you still have to stay on top of them.

Time for an update.
Unlike current events, the peppers are quietly moving along.  I had to space them out to give them more room, and myself easier access.
An overall shot

My annums are showing  color

A true form reaper
IMG_6935_zps1351dfd1.jpg

Looking at othr GLOGs, i see some of your showing tens of pods, for me it 5-10 mostly.
This is a typical output on my plants at the moment (I'm fine with it...)

IMG_6930_zps17e094b3.jpg

And to wrap it, JAFSH starting to show color

IMG_6931_zps79a25512.jpg

I accidently knocked off a reaper pod while watering.  couldn't resist trying a tiny bit from the tip.
wasn't too hot so i felt braver and took a bigger bit (maybe a dime size), made my entire mouth heat up.  felt great.
had a burning for a good ten minutes, could really feel the heat in my stomach.

Can't wait to taste a ripe one, though i don't see putting an entire pod in the mouth.
I can deal with the heat in the mouth, i fear what it will do to my stomach.

Like drinking, make sure you're stomach has something in it beforehand. Otherwise you'll learn the joy of cap-cramps :P

Looooookin' good otherwise :)

Thanks, will keep in mind next time.

My cousin was on a few hour leave from reserve duty down south.
Makes me proud that my first harvest will go to our troops, and will hopefully keep them alert and safe.

Also had pulled some tomatoes, i did a reservoir change with a peroxide flush.  That together with neep oil spray seems to have had a very good effect on my plants and most are showing signs of renewal and regeneration.
