wouldnt hurt to make a couple of the buckets... i use a step down drill bit and a hole saw to make mine... with the proper tools it didnt even take me  ten minutes to make one.
 
it was about the same price as to build one as it was to buy a five gallon planter

I'm impressed by the ease of use and growth rates of a self wateres but it still doesnt stop the roots from binding up..
 
3 Bhut's in their final pots, 15 gallon - time for some pods to happen :)
 
they were really root bound and dropping all the bottom leaves, glad i decided to transplant them
