CMPMAN1974 - 2012 Grow Log - Started 2/26/12

Well, after a long awaited time, I finally got some seeds in dirt this evening. Wow, it took a long time as some of these names of these varieties are long. :) My theme this year...Pequins/Tepins - rare ones & AFRICA. Also, I think some rare Brazilian varieties will be planted too along with some Pubescens in the next few days. I have no idea how germination will be on some of these African varieties, but it should be fun. I enjoy market varieties and odd stuff found off the beaten path.

Here's what I've got sowed to date. Wish me luck!

Chris

My seed stock pods of Trinidad Scorpion Yellow :) Note, I'm going for two different spin-offs. The top row is variant 1. The rest variant 2. Note the pod ribbing is much higher in row 1.

Also, I picked a gorgeous spiky large Caramel Bhut Jolokia. This is my 'selection' pod. I'd be thrilled to retain these attributes.

Nice Pods Chris,
I dug up 5 of my plants hopefully to over winter, after I get a few of the pods to ripen. I'm not really set up to overwinter very many of my peppers anymore so I may lose most of them. This cold snap is about two weeks early, and will get down to 34F. tonight , not a good year for my hot peppers, on the bright side there is always next year.

All this talk of game over has me wondering if my reports of 39 tonight being the coldest in the next 10-day are accurate. Hope they last a little longer for you Chris

i moved my potted-plants indoors last night because it went down to 50 AND a lot of grey clouds rolled-in this a.m. Hope the sun isn't gone for the season down here either. Seemed like last week we had a few coldish gray days then BAM! it was 85 again. I'm definitely getting at least one 4 ft bulb for my few indoor plants this off-season/winter. I can then use it for sprouting in the Spring too :P

I tried growing some of the piquin early spring but didn't have any success. :(
It's a lot of work, but everyday I am pulling in bowls of pequins/bird types. :) It's an endless task. lol. Gotta love African and Mexican peppers!

Hey Chris! I saw that Harare-Zimbabwe pepper pod you posted. Ever try growing any Piri Piri or African birds eye?

Sorry to hear the end of the season you have provided amazing profiles for the awesome pepper varieties. I started seeds from the boxes of peppers I bought from you and everything has almost sprouted thanks again.

The plants made it today, but it's getting colder tonight and tomorrow. I ripped out all but 30-35 plants anyways. Doing it in batches makes life more manageable. Honestly, I love growing them, but it it nice to have a break for a few months. The part of the break I don't like is cold weather / snow! I'm not a winter person for sure

Yes, I grew several Piri Piri strains from Africa this year... many looked similar in size, shape and growth habits. Ones from Laudium, S. Africa, Johannesburg, S. Africa, Seneca, etc.

I'm glad you enjoyed the GLOG. I have fun doing it though it does take effort! Also, I'm happy to hear the seeds did well. The circle of life continues. :)

We got two hard freezing cold nights enough to kill all the plants left in the garden, forgot I had about a dozen matts cherry tomatoes that I wanted to grab they froze solid along with some Bell peppers I missed. I had left two ghost peppers and a big brown hab along with a wild Praetermissum and Bishop Hat Aji all were froze to the ground.
The ones I dug up and put in 5 gal buckets are looking ok, so I will hopefully get some ripe peppers off of them, before I cut them back.
By the time the weekend gets here it will be a warm 56 to 58F at night and upper 70's in the day time.
Can't win for losing, I'm ready for Spring.

 To Chris and his amazing pictures of these rare peppers and ones I've never heard of before... Keep up the good work Chris...

95 degrees here today, amazing the temp difference.

Chris how do you know when a green scorpion is ripe?

Where did the year go?

Glad you got a few Caramel BJ's to come in for ya Chris, your Miss November is the gnarliest one I've ever seen. Looking forward to seeing it's offspring next year.

it warmed back up to high 70's here today. Last two days were cold/gray 50's. So, I was able to put potted plants back out on the porch
