HillBilly Jeff's 2016 Slimmed Down Grow

Just threw together some numbers and it looks like my entire pepper grow this season will be 72 plants.  One tray.  I think I can get them all in the raised beds.  Not sure if I will do them all in the raised beds, but I think I can.

I have a lot of peppers still in the freezer.  I have enough sauce.  I have a lot of powder.  I just need some fresh peppers to grow through summer.

I will be hitting tomatoes harder this year though.  I have a lot of tomatoes I want to can.

I will try to get my preliminary list up tomorrow.

Yes, lots of wild berries.  June is the raspberry harvest time.  Trouble with the black raspberry plants is they get diseased after time.  That's why there isn't much market for them, hard to keep going.  My older patches are on the downhill slide.  I do have newer patches coming on, so I should be able to make my jelly, desserts, juice, and perhaps a hot sauce???

July the blackberry and dewberry will be coming on.  If we get some rain.  There are some wild low bush blue berry patches, but they are a pain and they're small.

September the elderberry will be ready to go.  Awesome jelly.  Best ever.

I did go turkey hunting.

This guy strutted for about a half a mile before he got into range.  Probably more like a 1/4 mile, but he'd strut for a few minutes, take two steps, gobble, then strut for a few more minutes.  Took seven days to finally get in front of this boy.  Just over 24 pounds with an 11 inch beard.

Raised beds showed no sign of transplant shock or sun burn.  Liking this shade cloth.

Sweets and milds along with some volunteer potatoes I put in a row this morning.

Had a couple hoses go bad on me.  I believe I will switch the raised beds over to drip irrigation next year.  In front of the back garden I am thinking about putting in a bigger raised bed for herbs and the other half for strawberries.  The current strawberry raised bed will be made into onions or perhaps peppers if the onion idea doesn't look like it will work.Volunteer potato and onion in the compost pile.

That's nice to hear on the berries. I wonder if one could fertilize them and see if they fight off the disease. I would love to grow them. I'm a jam and syrup addict.

WOW!!! That's one hell of a bird. HUGE!! We have lots of birds. There are some big ones, but nothing like that, not that I've seen.

Glad to hear the plants are doing fine. I'm struggling with some plants going from hydro to soil. I think they'll rebound. They're Chinese, so they'll be set back more than I want.

Potatoes!! That's something I don't see much on here. My son wants to try the stacking tire method. Maybe next year.

I'm running drip irrigation this year. I wish I would have done it sooner.

Thanks for sharing Jeff.

My biggest bird was last year, 26 1/2 pound monster.

I tired the tire method last season and wasn't impressed.  Perhaps the black tires absorbed too much heat or I didn't get them buried soon enough to get the upward growth that I wanted.  I think a 4x4 cedar frame would work better.

Things are looking good Jeff!

And nice Turkey!

I really need to Turkey hunt next year, they're all over our place during April and May. It's taken many years of letting them be to see them come right up to the garden fence.

Keep it green!

Peppers aren't doing well at all.  Growing well and producing peppers, just not true.  Even the Red Mushroom seed I purchased turned out to be bishop's hats.  I believe next year I will grow 5-10 supers is all.  Just something to use fresh.  I will need to get fresh seed.  My chocolate cayenne peppers still going good though.

Just pulled my cipollini onions today and its my best year yet (year 3).  Going to caramelize a couple for patty melts today.
