Mattys first ever Glog "Into the fire" 2019 season

Hello everyone and thanks for looking at my "Into the Fire" Glog!!

So I started my gardening hobby in my early 20's about 16 years ago now, and though I have played around with many types of flowers/vegis  tomato's is what most of my energy was put into. I loved alll the different colors and types that could be grown which really reminds me of all the exciting Chilli variety's that exist today. A couple seasons ago while looking for some info on a particular type of sweet pepper I stumbled onto a few videos of some people eating super hots (Ghost,Reapers ect..).  After looking into it a little more I figured this would be a very interesting thing to grow even just as a novelty since really no one in my area grows much if anything at all.

Last Winter I went and bought some seeds from Ebay..one was a mixed bag Ghost/Reaper/Scorpion...another was the Peter Pepper and the third was some type of Thai i believe. Only the Thai ended up growing true to type and the other 2 was a Cayenne and Ornamental. I was pretty disappointed when they did finally start putting out pods. It was around that time I started looking for a group or forum dedicated to Chillis, and luck would have it I found THP and all of you fantastic peoples.

Anyways with the boring back story outta the way I really planned ahead for this years grow....I built a 6'Hx6'Lx2'D grow box (not exact mesurments) which has 3 shelves and the middle one able to come out if I wnated to grow larger plants from the bottom tier. I went overkill on seed types making 3 decent size buys, 2 of which were 30+ from Garth at TexasHotPeppers and a smaller one from a fella in Arz.

I do not plan to grow all of these as my wife would kill me, but 20 or so might not be so bad.

So would like to see some favorites and suggestions from the fine people here at THP so I can kinda get it down to a much much smaller grow list. Will also get some pics up shortly here of my grow box which still has one more shelf I need to wire up just waiting on a few more strip lights to arrive in the mail, but will still give an idea of what it will all look like when its done.

In final: This is a new hobby for me within the hobby I already enjoy...I am going to try some new things (new for me) and even the much earlier starts then normal will be interesting to see how it all comes out at the end.  I look forward to the input from the community and keeping this glog updated as much as I can.

Here is too success in 2019!!

A day late and a dollar short, I am. Had a buddy who used tires for tater planters. He would stack up 2 or 3 tires, fill them with dirt and plant his taters. Come harvest time, he’d unstack the tires and find his taters. No pitchfork needed.

That used to be very common in S. Oregon when
I was  kid, works really well. Loose soil and the black
tires are a great heat sink in the cool Spring.

No pics till later tonight but quick update all the same......

Tossed in a couple more cone bulb rigs on the bottom shelf, but I am actually starting to run out of LED bulbs which I never thought would happen, so anywyas I am going to break out some CFLs to fill some of the holes. On that note I can't belive how hard it is already here in my town to actually buy CFLs. They obviously are not as cheap to run as LEDs but still way better then a reg light bulb which are still found by the load full.

I have given up completely on the Red Manzanos and it is way to late for me at least to start the last 4-5 seeds I have I think. Might be good anyways since I really don't have the room, but I certainly would of made some if they managed to germ at all.

And after a busy week I am going to force myself to get my maters separated before it becomes an issue and they tangle. I have found mater seedlings to be a tad more delicate then alot of others but esp peppers, leaves seem to tear easier on me.

Looking good Matty!

Those plants are going to be yooge come dirt day!

Some interesting ideas here ;)  I use the kiddie pools for bottom watering large amounts of plants, and for drying cheapo clearance sale potting soil.
I was reading what 'yall do with growing taters. We loosen the soil with a 13" broadfork, then use a post hole digger and dig down aboot 10"s and place the seed. Add aboot 3-4"s of fine mulch and water. As they come up we keep adding mulch until they are flush with the soil level. Then just let them go. I dig them up with the broadfork in June. In sandy mulch laden soil it's an easy chore...

Keep it green as always!

I haven't seen a CFL for sale down here in years. Something about the mercury in them. I have a couple of eight packs of GE 60W equivalent bought from Sam's many years ago but I don't really like them. They cost too much and they burn out too quick.

I can say they will last for the advertised 9 years under certain circumstances. Hell, some of those unused CFL's stored in the hall closet are at least 9 years old.

I just set a few tire planters in the bale garden today for squash and pumpkin "hills". Dug a hole, mixed in some of my big pile of compost and shredded oak leaves. Set the tires and filled it all in the new and improved dirt.

I did find some at Canadian Tire which is a dept store up here based on tools/home/sporting goods ect up here but they aren't cheap...the last pack I bought was $13 for 3 pack I think, which I think is$4-$5 more then a 3 pack of the Led equivalent and those will last waaaaaaaaaaay longer. But I got some because I could not find any 6500k LEDs in town and so far have found they do pretty well in that range.

I do have a bunch of older Warm White color CFLs kicking around that have to be at least in the 9 yr range, like we had them befoer we moved up here and pretty sure its been 10 years now since I dragged my wife to this winter wonderland.

Couple quick shots of EVERYTHING on the middle shelf...keep in mind that its a 6ft long x 2ft wide x 2ft give or take high...Safe to say it has gotten crowded.

I will post a couple of the better looking plants in abit but trying to wrangle up dinner while work on this at the same time. I am taking out the ply wood and dropping the plants down away from the lights as they have gotten pretty tall and are getting a tad scorched

Oh, man, buddy - crowded, but awesome gorgeous
in every way. I can just see them by the time you get
them into the Ontario sun!

Looks like the milk cartons are money with the holes
punched in them!

Couple more shots.....

Each time I pull stuff out I just cannot belive how things have come along from the time before. So things are moving nice and steady with obviously I am very pleased with.

So for people who read this often, I am sure you have realized that no cuts have been made and by this point I have just said to hell with it. I think by the time the maters need more love the hoop house should be good to go and plants can at the very least be moved outside, even if it is just for the day.
