OCD 2017!!!

Well it's 2017. Finally! Last year was a success, as far as the ground plants were concerned. Virgin, clay ground. My Chinese got smacked by hail twice! No room for error with those. Out of 12 plants I got ONE BBG. First and only. That variety is cursed. Tried for the past 3 years and some sort of calimity happens.

This year I decided to try 21+ different varieties of the BBG. I have 9 Reaper crosses. 21 and counting other varieties. I built a hoophouse and some COB led's. Planning on getting them outside in March sometime. That might be a delusion, beings I'm in Colorado. We shall see. There is only a few varieties that I've grown before. The rest are all new. I'm planning on isolating most of them.

Just started some Lemon Drops for Throwdown Growdown. I will wait a couple weeks before I start the others. Everything needs to be in order before I germinate. No turning back at that point. I want two plants from most varieties. Plants need to be woody by ground day. That's the only way I have a chance at success with late maturity varieties. If I have extras, I'll give away to my friends of THP.

My list is growing, but not much. Here is some of the varieties that made the cut.

Here is a video of the greenhouse without the solar mulch. I said, I took Ricks advice in the video. I misspoke. He advised me to cover the mulch up. I just ripped it completely out in a fit of RAGE. LOL! I actually tried to make a slit down the middle and roll it back. Didn't quite work out.

I never second-guess the man on the ground Chuck... If you wanted the solar mulch gone, I'm sure you had valid reasons. [emoji111] Hopefully now the plants in tbe hoophouse will finally blossom. [emoji106] Cheers!

I think you made the right choice, pulling the solar mulch up too, Chuck. I'm really hoping you get some flowers soon, man, it's almost August! Is it too much of a PITA to maybe roll up the side walls of the plastic? Just a thought (?). I know you've got the fans going in there, but they might just be blowing all that hot air around. With the walls pulled up a few feet, you might get a really nice (cooler) cross breeze going through there, and you could pull them back down in a couple of months

I agree with the above^ if you can redesign next year being able to roll the sides up a few ft will solve the heat problem.  Mosquito netting is pretty easy to get and you could have that attached to the few ft of open space you roll up so the hoppers stay out.  There is a farm here that is growing tomatoes and peppers this way, using cold frames then rolling up the sides 3-4 ft during the heat of the day and then rolling them back down in the evening.

Thanks Rick!

I'm hoping it changes something. I definitely need to do some redesigning for next year.

You are absolutely right. Rick had told me to do that in the beginning, when I was building the house. Spring got to me before I could make something good to roll up. I wanted everything to be self automated. I see now that is not possible. Next year for sure.

Thanks Freeport.

I will do that for sure. The hoppers are my biggest enemy every season. I've got them under control with the house and now heat it my biggest enemy. I like the netting idea. I have plenty time this Winter, to get it right.

Thanks again.

I'll add a 3rd hell yeah to rolling the sides up ;) The screens is an excellent idea as well!

The swamp cooler is a nice idea, the greenhouse at the high school has this massive swamp cooler, and the last time I was in there it was in the low 90's and the greenhouse was 80°.

I've been seeing a few plants in the garden flowering and setting pods despite the heat this year. I've been doing things a bit differently this year, trying to get better mid season production. Worked hard on obtaining a deep root system early on, it seems to be paying off. I think they like the wobblers in the morning during this heat.

I will say changing gears like you did with the greenhouse definitely throws a new learning curve at you. Bhut, as it cools those plants will be large and produce really well. Just think about what you've learned so far this season ;)

I couldn't agree more. Its been a learning curve. I won't use solar mulch in the greenhouse. I don't think, I need it there. I'll use it out side the house.

Just a little update. Checked the highs in the greenhouse the past couple days.

Yesterday
90f in the shade
100f in the greenhouse

Today
93f in the shade
101f in the greenhouse

Removing the solar mulch was a good plan. I feel much better. 10 degrees or less, above the shade temp is really good. Its hotter than that in the Sun. I think things will start changing.

Great results Chuck! Is that with the ventilation going?

Thanks Rick!

Yes, that's with the ventilation. Couldn't do it without ventilation. It would be like having the windows rolled up in the pickup mid day. I'll get this tuned up for next year. I should have taken your advice when building it, and made it so I could roll up the sides. I was so tuned into self automated, that I thought it would be a problem. I still have no door made. LOL! I didn't want to roll it up and down everyday. Not realizing that I would only have to do that in the Spring and Fall. In the Summer it could stay rolled up 24/7. I'll do some designing.

Thanks again for all your help.

We had a swamp cooler when I was a kid, the humidity is too high in kansas to use swamp coolers though I think, they make our houses like a swamp lol. Colorado is way different though I bet its better to have a swamp cooler there

Your right, Andy. It only works in places that are dry. I prefer AC over swamp cooler. AC works all summer long. With the rains lately (unusual) the swamp cooler makes it cool and sticky. Swamp cooler more efficient in energy though.

Our temps are suppose to drop into the mid to upper 50's this next week. I believe I'll start to see flowers then. Still will be around lower 90's, but night time temps should start inducing flower production.

Received some fresh pods from my brother Gary. He was vey kind to send me some of his Forbing Naga. A Nagabrain variant that started showing more Naga traits. Its not crazy hot like the Nagabrains I've tasted. I've been wanting to try these for some time. I've followed this variety for a few years. Gary sent me seeds this last Spring, but it was to late to start. It'll be first on the list next season. He turned me on to the BOC last year, now Forbing this year. What a guy.

I tried a half a pod. Excellent!!! I wouldn't expect less from Gary. This is his baby, and I see why.

Its not bitter like you would expect from some Naga varieties. The heat is just right for me. First fresh pod of the season and no gut pain. It has a wonderful smell. Very fruity. A new favorite!

Thanks Gary! Job well done.

Cell Phone pics don't do it justice.

Most excellent Chuck, Gary's a gent for sure! Thanks for your impression of the flavor and heat... Since they don't melt faces and cause cramping, maybe I'll be able to interest my Wife in them. [emoji2]

No problem Rick. I wouldn't say they don't cause cramping. My tolerance is quite high. The bottom half of the pepper was not bad. The top half made me really sweat and open up the nasal passages. LOL! That was half of the pepper I split. Its still hot, but pleasant. If that makes sense.

I agree with Stickman. The Forbing Naga sounds like a great superhot. They look kinda Caramel in the pic. Are they red? I'm so glad you were able to get some superhots while you're waiting for your flowers. Great looking pods, Gary! Very nice of you to spread the heat.
They are most definitely red. The led lights and iPhone diluted the color.

I agree. Gary sending me these pods have have opened my eyes. I see light at the end of the tunnel. LOL! He's a good human being. If you look at all the people I hang out with on here, they all have great personalities and are down to earth. Gary is no exception. Couldn't ask for better friends.
