P. Dreadie Memorial Group Grow 2016

Long-time THP veterans mourned the loss last August of Amarillo, Texas musician/songwriter/silversmith/chilehead Erin Mason, known to us here on the boards as P. Dreadie. Erin was an enigma, one of the most interesting and creative, yet gentle and loving guys I ever knew. Many of us may be unaware that he played harmonica in one of the original Austin, Texas bands of the early 1970s "Cosmic Cowboy" era, Alvin Crow and the Pleasant Valley Boys. When Erin decided to step off of Alvin's perpetually-touring bus and return to Amarillo, he travelled to Jamaica, fell in love with the Reggae beat, collected the best Scotch Bonnet fruit he could find, and his alter-ego Papa Dreadie was born.

In 2013 Erin sent me a few pods of the Scotch Bonnets he had been breeding, carefully selected descendants of the original fruit he brought back from the Caribbean all those years ago. I harvested every single seed from those pods, and stored them away, as I focused increasing attention on other varieties. When his wife Liz gave us the news last August that Erin had passed, I knew what I had to do with those seeds: a community grow in his memory. I have already shared about half of them, and I will continue to share them with experienced growers of the Scotch Bonnet until they are gone.

Papa Dreadie Scotch Bonnet Select, grown by Erin in 2013:

It is a great tasting scotch bonnet, very much shape wise is exactly like my Bahamian Goats. I plan to do a taste taste when my other bonnets come in soon. We sampled it last night and it had very little heat near the tail but flavorful and was the perfect bonnet when we sliced it near the stem and had a piece. I nice lingering heat with citrus/flora lnotes.

+1^! Those are prettier than MOAs by a mile. And my first taste test showed me that Erin's bonnets have them beat with flavor as well! From now on, I will think of the MOA bonnet as a watered down, less sweet version of the P. Dreadie standard bonnet.
After trying my first pod, I don't care so much that my one and only MOA plant of the season was destroyed by a storm.

Thank Carlton! I agree, but I'm partial to Erin's pepper... :P

Beautiful story, pods and plants. I'm a beginner grower so I was wondering if when his seed stock is gone will the strain only be available where he got them from in Jamaica?

Thanks G.G.! You can be sure there will always be plenty of P. Dreadie seeds from now on...There are some very good growers seeing to that!

I agree with you, Chris...I did, however, get a very hot one the other day. A couple of people I sent Dreadie pods to reported the same experience...

Gary, I had the same experience from the pods you sent me... the first 4 or 5 were surprisingly mild for a scotch bonnet, then I had one today that was very hot and got my attention. I'm definitely planting seed from that pod next year. The crunchiness and flavor of these peppers are really nice!

Last night at 8:00 I snapped this shot of a nice thunderhead just north of the house...Little did I know it was moving toward us...It was dark when the storm hit the garden, and it was still crashing and thumping when we went to bed, so I had no idea what havoc nature had wrought...

Fortunately it wasn't bad at all...Only lost one plant. This morning I found that a big pecan branch had snapped one of my Dreadies:

Tree trimming company will be called this morning! The whole time I was picking up broken Scotch Bonnet branches Erin's song "When the Fire Comes" was playing in my head:

I have hundreds of Select seeds from Gary's (Windchicken) pods that I would be happy to distribute to those who want them (as long as Gary is fine with that). These ARE some very good scotch bonnets!!!

Would you be willing to trade a dozen or so for some of Erin's Standard SB seeds from this season's pods?

I would be happy to send you some of the Select seeds. I'm also open for trade possibilities... but will send you seeds regardless. Drop me a pm with your address.

Would you be open to sending seeds to a new grower? If not, I completely understand! I'm just in love with Scotch Bonnets, try to incorporate them in a lot of my cooking.
