P. Dreadie Memorial Group Grow 2016

Long-time THP veterans mourned the loss last August of Amarillo, Texas musician/songwriter/silversmith/chilehead Erin Mason, known to us here on the boards as P. Dreadie. Erin was an enigma, one of the most interesting and creative, yet gentle and loving guys I ever knew. Many of us may be unaware that he played harmonica in one of the original Austin, Texas bands of the early 1970s "Cosmic Cowboy" era, Alvin Crow and the Pleasant Valley Boys. When Erin decided to step off of Alvin's perpetually-touring bus and return to Amarillo, he travelled to Jamaica, fell in love with the Reggae beat, collected the best Scotch Bonnet fruit he could find, and his alter-ego Papa Dreadie was born.

In 2013 Erin sent me a few pods of the Scotch Bonnets he had been breeding, carefully selected descendants of the original fruit he brought back from the Caribbean all those years ago. I harvested every single seed from those pods, and stored them away, as I focused increasing attention on other varieties. When his wife Liz gave us the news last August that Erin had passed, I knew what I had to do with those seeds: a community grow in his memory. I have already shared about half of them, and I will continue to share them with experienced growers of the Scotch Bonnet until they are gone.

Papa Dreadie Scotch Bonnet Select, grown by Erin in 2013:

Holler at me later on in the season...That's when I dry my seeds.

My buddy Tim Krucker made this amazing hot sauce from my Papa Dreadie Scotch Bonnets, plus this badass mug...The flavor is pure Scotch Bonnet, with just enough vinegar and salt to stabilize it. The name Liquid Gold could not be more appropriate...I burned through almost half a bottle on these ribs!!!

Awesome man, I will definitely holler at you in a couple of months, thank you! I have a few Bonnet varieties, if you are interested I will send you some seeds.

BTW the ribs and sauce look awesome!

Hi everyone.

Just found this thread and would be honored to continue the memorial by growing
some Papa Dreadie Scotch Bonnet select.

If someone would be kind enough to send me a fruit (1) I would really appreciate it.
(have grown so many seeds that are not what the label said that I prefer to pick my
own seeds so I know from which fruit/chilli they come from, if possible)

I will of course pay.

Would love to hear more also if anyone grew PD and Moa side by side and what differs between them (else that being from two diff. countries)?

Well, I still have a "maybe" PDreadie out in the 8th acre, still hasn't flowered for me, but my NOTaPDreadie is loading up with various pheno-types.

And I'm finally getting some ripeness...

Being as I'm not sure what my other plant will produce, if anything, I'd love to grow some real Dreadies next season. They look MAH-VELOUS! Anyone having extra seed after harvest please consider me....

No pics right now, but i got some tiny pods on 2 of my Dreadie plants.  TINY.  What are the chances they´ll turn yellow within, say, 7 weeks?

Food thing i got one in a grow bag; i can bring it inside before first frost if it comes down to it.

I'm growing P. Dreadie, MoA and Scotch Brain this season... It'll be interesting to compare them side-by-side.

Eric don't be put off those are still good P. Dreadie's just not the "select strain" I was only getting a small percentage that were the perfect pheno... hopefully the later pods will be a better shape for you ... they still taste good whatever shape
I was going to say the same thing, basically.... I bet those long-pheno Dreadies will still taste right.  You only need the pretty pods for pics on THP; when you´re eating them, it doesn´t matter what the shape is... it´s all about that proper Bonnet flavor.
