For the hoophouse frame, I pounded in some 3/4" rebar several feet into the ground. I then build the frame with PVC and covered it with 6 mil plastic. It is getting far too hot in there and actually topped out around 125 F today. I need to play with the ventilation before I even consider putting seedlings out there.

Dude, that is one Awesome hoop house - gigundous! That
was quite a job, but will be well worth it if you can get the
teps below 110F : )

I've done a quick redesign and reinforcement on the hoophouse. I installed some more vents and a way to prop open my door flap. I put up some reinforcement on the center rib of the structure and things seem better. We are currently getting some wind and rain and it looks pretty solid. I need to keep reminding myself that this is temporary until plant out.

I didn't go back to look at the pic again, but you could always
put guy lines on the ends if wind becomes a problem. I want to
see the hut full of peppers! : )

Plants are all looking really good, Dan. That hoop
house is going to work out just great!
Still want to see it full of peppers!

The hoophouse will be coming down as soon as I plant out. I'm going to be using the temporary hoophouses over the two largest beds to extend my season like I did last year. Heck, last year I was harvesting peppers through mid-November!!!

So how did you modify the vents in that thing, and are you heating it at night? Great layout and construction!

Shane

I cut some 2 - 3 foot flaps in the ghetto hoophouse. I used some double-sided velcro tape to be able to close them when necessary. At night, I'm using a couple candles and some heat sink buckets to keep the temperature above freezing in there.

Plants are looking nice and healthy Dan congrats. Careful with the candles, safety first.

Best of luck to you man.

I'm amazed they would keep a space that big warm! How do you set that up?

Pretty easy actually. Just sunk some 4 foot rebar in the soil and slide 3/4" PVC over it. Stapled the plastic right to some 8 foot landscaping ties to hold everything down.

Here's a couple pictures of my 2012 wild babies...

Very nice transplants, Red! Actually, my question was
about how you set up the candles and heat sink for
warming the space. Sorry I wasn't clear.

Oh, no worries buddy. The heat sinks are just some buckets full of water to catch the solar radiation and hold some heat. The candles came from an ice-cave / camping idea. I've used a small candle lantern to heat my tent in the winter for as long as I've been camping. Believe me, the candle(s) doesn't keep it warm in the hoophouse, just above freezing.

Okay, yeah. I've used a candle lantern on many occasions snow camping - they really do heat up a space. Above freezing is definitely critical! How many candles for a space that size?

I thought somehow the buckets and candles went together
