Sawyer '14 - Seed Offer

A new season begins.  It's a work in progress, but here's my 2014 grow list as it now stands.  It will certainly have some additions as I'm still expecting some more acquisitions.  I hope it will have some deletions, too, because it's just too ridiculously long as it is now.  My hope is/was to grow at least 10 of each variety I grew and saved seeds from in 2013, in order to characterize the extent of cross pollination.  I may have to cut that back to 5 each, at least for some varieties.  Without further ado, here are the contenders:

By my count, that's around 75 82 varieties, not counting the TBDs and expected new acquisitions.  I have more space available for in-grounds in the garden now, and also plan to expand the potted plant grow area.  I plan to add some enhancements this year, in terms of custom lighting for stage 2 growth (3.5" square pots), isolation techniques, cap-based repellents, and more.  Stay tuned to see what actually happens.

Last season I grew 70 some plants, the ones that came out best for us in our climate were Early Girl. I wanted fast production before the mega heat hit....We also grew Abe Lincoln tomato and seeds from Campari tom's that were purchased, neither did well. We canned 71 quarts, mainly from the EG plants. In early Sept. I planted 3 5 gal pots of the Early Girls, we're still picking from those plants. LB likes the fresh Tom's, I prefer them in sauces.

The 3 plants continue to produce, even though it's winter...but our winter is not your winter....

There were like the sweet pickled rings actually. I am hoping to find a recipe that makes them more candy-like. Will keep a lookout... if you find one first maybe we can compare notes!
Actually, why not make something like StefanW's wife did? She made candied almonds with hot pepper powder in them that were addictive! You could dry and powder Jals for that end of it.

Once again, I've become slack in my attention to the growers' forum, my own thread as well as all the others.  I'd promise to do better, but I'd probably be :liar: .  All I can say is, I'll try.

I received some more seeds this past weekend, these from Stefan (meatfreak):

Thank you, Stefan!

I also, finally, only two weeks behind schedule (or a month behind in the case of the pubes), planted the first flat yesterday.  PF1:

Progress should, hopefully, come a little more rapidly now.

I sorted through all my seeds yesterday, no small task.  I have 22 varieties of tomatoes to plant about equally divided between seeds I bought and some DesertChris sent to me last year.  Together with all the other vegetables, grains, natives, medicinals (no, not that kind), and more, not mention peppers, my 5000 sq. ft. space is looking pathetically small.  Definitely going to have to expand container growing and/or till up some more space.

I'm increasingly of the opinion there are very few foods that aren't improved with the addition of at least a little pepper heat.

Edit: Labeled flat diagram PF1.

Aman, Sawyer John., but you're apreachin'  too the choir. :D

Looks like your ducks are lining up.
And you've got plenty of time yet.

Dirt day already, as in plant out?  I've just barely begun sowing.

I've updated the grow list in the first post.  I think I'm up to 93 varieties, with multiple sources for several of them.  Still targeting 5-10 plants for each variety from my own seed stock and no more than 5 or 6 plants for each new variety.

I think I saw my first hook awhile ago.  I have to look more closely to be sure it's actually a pepper, but it's been a week since the first seeds went down, so it's time.

Going to be an incredible grow Sawyer. How many pods/lbs of pods do you get from 500-1000 or so plants?

I'll get back to you on that in November.  (I really have no idea what to expect.  A lot, I hope.)

I can plant out between 3-1 and 3-15 weather permitting, so the window for seed starting is coming to an end, or else November pods like last year...
