OCD 2017!!!

Well it's 2017. Finally! Last year was a success, as far as the ground plants were concerned. Virgin, clay ground. My Chinese got smacked by hail twice! No room for error with those. Out of 12 plants I got ONE BBG. First and only. That variety is cursed. Tried for the past 3 years and some sort of calimity happens.

This year I decided to try 21+ different varieties of the BBG. I have 9 Reaper crosses. 21 and counting other varieties. I built a hoophouse and some COB led's. Planning on getting them outside in March sometime. That might be a delusion, beings I'm in Colorado. We shall see. There is only a few varieties that I've grown before. The rest are all new. I'm planning on isolating most of them.

Just started some Lemon Drops for Throwdown Growdown. I will wait a couple weeks before I start the others. Everything needs to be in order before I germinate. No turning back at that point. I want two plants from most varieties. Plants need to be woody by ground day. That's the only way I have a chance at success with late maturity varieties. If I have extras, I'll give away to my friends of THP.

Thanks Rick! I've not decided on dirt day yet. I need to move one of the hoops at the end, inward. I built the hoophouse 12x20. I would like to have more over lap with plastic. Just a minor adjustment. I'll wait to see night time temps well above freezing, before I move anything outside. I can partition part of the green house and add some heat at night. Only if their still in pots. I'm still shooting for first part of April. Things can change quickly around here. We haven't had much of a Winter. I'm afraid it may come later.

When do you guys plant out? I know you use the row covers. Late April, early May?

It all sounds good Chuck! I remember how changeable the weather was along the front range, I bet it's even more so at your elevation. Take your time and get it right.
Dirt-day here is usually around mid-April for me, but that depends on local conditions. I've transplanted outside as late as early May if it was cold enough. Cheers!
 
Looking really good Chuck! I can't wait to see how your grow goes this season. All the pieces are in place for your best grow ever!
 
The dirt day question simply cannot apply to me, as it's happening ;)  BUT, remember, come July around here it's all toast, unless one wants to go 75 days of everyday watering for the fall yield. I'm going to pass on that from here on in. :rolleyes:

Yeah, I'm just playing it day to day. In the mean time, I'll try and get the plants bigger.

I'm really trying not to mess up in my part. I would like some bigger plants then last year when I plant out. Even if the weather is right, if their not up to par, I'm going to keep them in a controlled environment as long as it takes. My season is to short and nights are cold, even in the Summer. I'm hoping the plastic mulch heats the ground to improve root growth. Bigger the rootball, the bigger the plants.

Well hopefully I'll have enough pods to send you Fall care package. Watering every day sucks. I use the drip irrigation, but my water doesn't have the minerals like yours. Could you use one of those rain bird units with the valves for lawn irrigation?

Sounds good! Airflow is the key, also possibly some shade cloth at the ready (I throw an old sheet over my greenhouse whilst the plants are still tender!).
 
I'm really happy to see the way the soil has come around for you Chuck!
 
I tried the rainbird timers, I have 3 and they're all fouled, stopped up. Tried vinegar soak to try and free them up. No joy. If I really need to irrigate whilst on Vacation I would buy a new one, and it would last about long enough, but not going there anymore.
 
As far as your hoophouse. Get it up and running before you plant, so you can learn how it affects the temps. Your temps are crazy to deal with. So cold at night and so hot during the day. It looks rather large, so that should help with evening things out temp wise. Sunshade for sure and possibly hard framed ends with doors that you can open in the morning; with a timer based fan to move air.
 
How's the wind in the backyard? I see it's a fenced yard, so it should be a reduced wind environment.
 
I'll be watching to see how things pan out. And from what I see so far it's a win-win season in the making!

I might be able to get away with not using the plastic in the Summer, just shade cloth and the plastic mulch should do better than last year. Plastic for sure in the Spring and Fall though. I did manage to purchase 2 bails of peat, one big bag of earthworm castings and a giant bag of perlite. I'll mix it all up with some nice compost and seedling mix will be done. I think next week, I'm potting up.

I always over plant. LOL. I want to plant 14-15 plants per row. That would be around 16 inches. I have two beds in each side of the hoophouse, they will take another 30 plants easy. That's 90 plants in the ground. The other plants will go into containers. Maybe 20 plants. I want to keep more than one or two of the F1's-F2's for pheno selection. I'm thinking 120 so plants. That would be two of each variety. The rest I'll give away. I've got almost 3, 72 cell flats filled, plus another 20 in the aerogardens.

Your hoop house garden is looking good, the dirt in there looks really nice.  I am so far behind on where I wanted to be with some raised beds etc. and weather has been great for Feb/March.  Plants look like they are coming along nicely.  Keep up the good work.

Thanks Justin. I'm ahead of the game with the garden and behind on the plants. They will catch up. I'm being patient. Once they get their new shoes next week, they will do fine. I will introduce them to the led light once they settle. Then, they will stretch. I want them to have woody stems when they hit they ground. I don't care if it's frost free, their not hitting the dirt until they got some wood. LOL! I think they'll do better if they're hardy. This is all in therory of coarse.

Great contest you've got on Facebook. If I wasn't swimming in sprouts, I'd be all over that. A couple of winners will be stoked.

Thanks for the offer Chuck! I'm good, in fact I gave over 20 plants away last week and this week. Never hurts to start more than you need to make sure you have what you want come dirt day ;)
