    First Buffalo Wild Wings experience

I was overwhelmed by salt and vinegar on their hottest wings. Terrible. The mango hab wings were very good but not that hot.

    Tonly's 2011 grow log

Mike, The cumari ou passarinho seeds came from Peppermania 2 years ago. The pictures (there is no description) on chileman.org don't look anything like the ones I'm growing. I think I read a post from Tigahb8 recently about these peppers. Maybe he has a good description and can tell if what...

harvesting When should I harvest the fruit?

Even after they turn the final color, I have found the flavor and heat level will continue to change. For most chinense types I prefer to pick them a couple weeks after they turn color. They taste sweeter to me at that stage. You can get a lot of different flavors from one plant and it looks...

    what rig to choose?

The metal halide and hps lights used for growing are usually 400, 600, or 1000 watts but smaller down to around 150 watts are available. For growing seedlings to transplant outdoors the T12, T8, T5, and CFL work great based on what I've seen on this forum. Probably the most critical part is...

    what rig to choose?

From what I've seen on this forum, you can grow seedlings with just about any type of flouro lights. If you want to grow to maturity and produce fruit indoors with artificial light, metal halide and high pressure sodium may be a better choice. Those lights produce more heat so you'll need to...

    Tonly's 2011 grow log

Thanks for watching everyone. :) Shooting the video is fun. I wish I had the skills to edit them into something other than "raw footage". Technology-wise I'm about 2 decades behind and I'm not even gonna try and catch up. :D

Thanks for all the kind words. Here's more "raw footage" of the garden. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-mA5ZxqhrA

    Tonly's 2011 grow log

It's been a long time since I updated this grow log. The weather and the aphids have really set my season way back but I think things will turn around eventually. I got a new video camera and decided to post my first attempt at making videos about the garden. Warning...I'm a total amateur at...

    NoooooOOOOOOOoOOOOO!!!!!!

Lady bugs have always controlled the aphids for me until this spring. The population exploded and it has really set my season way back. I have resisted using chemicals, but next year I may. I lost too much of my season because of these guys. I talked to an entomologist today from U of A who...

    Recommended Varieties for Small Pots

Super Chilis would probably do well in a small container.

    Quinoa

I direct seeded into the garden. My poor results were probably due to cold weather. It's finally starting to warm up so maybe I'll have better luck this time around. Tabouli salad made with quinoa is a favorite of mine. I also like it as a hot cereal for breakfast too.

    Quinoa

I have heard amaranth is similar to quinoa but without the bitter stuff. I planted some but got poor germ rate. Gonna try again.

Not Extremely Impressed with T5 Bulbs

I haven't used T12 bulbs but my 6 bulb T5 works OK. My 400 watt metal halide grows much nicer plants and will cover a larger area. I'll continue to use both but any new purchase will be metal halide.

    Confused chillies

My fatali and yellow 7's changed from yellow to more orange after putting them in the greenhouse last fall. I now have the plants back in the ground so will see if they go back to the original color or stay orange. The color change you're describing sounds more extreme than what I noticed with...

    fertilizer 10-10-10 Fertilizer question?

I think I would add little to no fertilizer to the mix to start with. Start feeding when you transplant and then feed small amounts on a regular basis based on how your plants are growing. It is much easier to add more fertilizer than to correct for too much.

    Fish Pepper

I grew it last season. Not only is the foliage variegated, the pods are as well until they eventually turn all red when very ripe. I'm pretty sure I got my seed from SSE too. Nice plant.

    Why pots/buckets

Growing in containers does give you a lot more control over water, nutrients, soil type, light, etc. Learning how to adjust all those variables for best production is where I'm behind. I have better results in raised beds and in the ground probably because I don't have control of everything. :D

    T5ho Brand opinions wanted

I have a 6 bulb Hydrofarm T5 unit that works OK. I also have a 400 watt metal halide. My plants seem to do much better under the metal halide and I can cover a larger area with it. The only benefit for me with the T5 is less heat.
