About to go Naga for the first time...

I was just reading some about stressing the plants and it is "water stressing" that increases the heat...the article also said that cooler temperatures decrease the heat of the pods...

Ah, ok, gotcha. The ones indoors were far drier than those outside (I travel a lot so they missed watering quite often), so in that case I guess these are the hottest...

Ok, last night I ate a Dorset Naga pod, whole and raw. And WOW, that is one IMPRESSIVE burn.

It took a little while to kick-in, and again I was surprised at the initial fruity taste as I cheerfully chewed away (until there was nothing left to chew - did it properly). It caught up with me pretty fast though, and the adrenaline rush hit as the fire spread across my whole tongue with an intensity like nothing I've experienced before.

It REALLY gets the back of the throat, making it kinda tough to breathe and speak for a while there.

Neil, you have balls of steel: I have no idea how you managed to go so long without drinking or eating anything to dull the edge. I think I lasted about 3-4 minutes before diving for the milk and yoghurt.

It was about 30 mins before my mouth was back to normal, but by that time my stomach was struggling - bloated and searing. It turns out that a couple of handfuls of baguette are not enough to fulfil Neil's "don't do it on an empty stomach" advice. I recommend eating a reasonable meal a while beforehand. As soon as I ate something substantial (about 45 mins after) the relief was immediate, then enabling me to go out drinking and playing pool for the rest of the night as originally planned.

I did try to film it, but my camera won't let me extract the file for some reason. I'll see if I can recover it tonight.

I'm not sure that I'll be doing it again any time soon, but I'm glad I tried it and know the drill. These things will for sure be going into my meals quite regularly from now on!

Cheers all,

FS

I'm glad you enjoyed the rush....I'm yet to do it but i will have done the Bhut, Morich, 7 pot and fatalii by may next year....

:mouthonfire:

You are now in a very elite club. But it's growing by the day....

Thats pretty good for the first time - I had a small piece of a Naga and managed to do it dry - but a whole one?

Man, you got everything we like around here..good food, good booze, nagas, and fine company...:D

Good job on the Dorset Naga..it's a ripper but still tasty. That belated hit is the best part...folks going that's not bad...minute later...Aaiiieee!

Nice Job mate.

Good job! Not everyone would do a whole pod!

Are there black candles next to the whisky shelf? Makles it look like some evil altar!! :)

Cheers guys. A few snapshots of the experience are at the end of this album: http://www.facebook.com/album.php?aid=75371&l=591b3&id=626200990 (You can see the whisky collection in the background too - my other extreme culinary obsession.)

NEED MORE NAGA!

I've got myself a couple of jars of this to back up my own meagre harvest: http://www.123curry.co.uk/123curry/...+blisteringly+hot,+use+sparingly!&price=14.99

I'm waiting eagerly for the 'Snake Bite - Pure Venom' to come out too...

Cheers Talas!

I might do it again at some point. I'm tempted to try one of the small ones that have had a hard life trying to grow outside exposed to the Netherlandic elements, or maybe an unripe one from inside... just to see the difference.

I'm in no rush though. :-)

holy crap, those plants are crazy tall!! what size pots are they in? I'm glad they worked out for you; my bhut jolokia just started flowering, so hopefully ill be eating them soon.... nothing better than a fresh super hot pepper in the middle of winter...

Yeah, they got a lot bigger than I expected, and I should probably have repotted them a while ago. Hardly seems worth it now: there are two fruits left, and I guess it's a bit late to expect more...?
