Bhuter's 2017 Glog

Hello everybody!

This is my first glog and I know I'm really late with it. I've been growing superhots for a few years, but have never kept a record. So here it goes!

2017 Growlist

Pumpkin Bubblegum (Ford's Thanks to BSH)
Big Black Mama x Caramel 7 Pot Madballz F2 (Mine)

I started my seeds in early February and continued starting seeds until April...just couldn't stop starting new varieties...again. I always take the cheap route and use plain old Miracle-Gro potting soil. It has always worked for me. I also start my seeds in paper towels then transfer them straight to 4 inch pots (I thought they were 3 inch, but they're 4). I use a 125w CFL for lighting and I usually grow around 30 plants. Here's the beginning.

I had crappy soil before this pic and some of these are bare-root transplants. But I did lose one...Chocolate Primo. It just looked funky after transplant.

Here they were just before plant out. Pic taken on May 4...with the addition of a few new seedlings and maters.

Peppers planted out May 10.

Then I ran into the bugs. The flippin' bugs. Judging by the damage, I'm guessing broad mites.

But I soaped then neemed a couple times and things are looking up. I'll have to get a pic of what that plant (Goatsweed) looks like now. This is the latest pic with the addition of the nursery veggies.

That'll probably do it for now. Thanks for stopping by!

Your garden is rockin. Great looking pods.
I can't believe all the pods and flowers on those plants. Great job!

I'm going to try your isolation technique on some of mine when they flower. I have a cool sb7j (UFO pheno) from Justin. The pod he sent me was huge.
Thank you, Chuck! That plant IS producing like crazy. I got those seeds from Wicked Mike a few years ago. I got my SB7J seeds from Pex in 2014...F5. I liked the phenos I got, so I grew from the same batch this year. I get about 3 different phenos. If this isolation takes, I'll try F6 next year. Justin grows some monstrous pods, so I can imagine what that SB7J looked like. Thanks again!

Sounds like a good one. Great commitment. Someday I'll get there.

Here is a link to his site. Couldnt find the actual picture. It might be on my camera. https://www.whitehotpeppers.com/products/7-pot-jonah-orange-x-ufo

Wow! Those are all really nice! And they all pretty much have the same UFO shape. Mine are more like the "grasshut" shape, I guess. A couple different phenos, but mostly the same. Here are some from 2015.

Those look amazing. I tried to find a pic of the exact pod he sent. I thought it was in a glog. Mine or his. It was about 3 inches in diameter and had that defined UFO shape. Those look really good. Great color and shape.

Thank you, Chuck! I forgot how much I liked them until I ordered a mixed box from WM in April and it had some SB7J in there. I went through my seeds and started one right away. Lol.

Like I mentioned, one thing that I don't like about the Glue method of isolating is you can't choose your phenotype. This is the plant of BBM x Madballz that is growing the best and has really light colored unripened pods on it. This was the one I isolated first for those reasons and because I'm hoping for a Caramel version. That's my ultimate goal. But here's what I mean about phenos: The plant is putting off pods that all pretty much look like this.

And here's what my isolated pod looks like.

I don't know if it's because of the struggle of trying to grow through the glued petals that morphed the shape or if it's because it's the first pod, or...? All I know is I'd like to have the pheno in the first pic.

Here's the whole grow so far. About half the size of last years' at this time, but this is the best year I've had with bigger-than-Cherry tomatoes. My tomatoes like the fish emulsion, peppers...not so much.

I thought its pretty well established that you don't have to select a perfect pod to get the right genetics.
A pepper's shape mature's as the parent plant matures, nutrient/water availability, temp/humidity etc.
A perfectly shaped pod could have crap genetics inside...but the mother is perfect.

Bottom line...if you want the same pods...clone the plant.
sexual reproduction is a crapshoot.

First pods are usually funky too.

Thank you, Matt. This is what I was hoping to learn.

BBM x Madballz Plant #4

Does the strain that you created need to be stable before it gets a name? I'd like to name the BBM x Madballz cross (and I have a name that I think I like). I plan on continuing to work with it to try and stabilize it. Or maybe it should just be labeled by what it's crossed with??

Been finding pests here and there and I'm thinking about Neem again. Also showing up are the damn Brown Marmorated Stink Bugs. I hate those bast-holes. Does Neem deter Stink Bugs?

Thanks for stopping by!

I wrote in the thread about "...weird crosses" about a potential cross I made. In 2015, I had a few overwinters. One was a Black Naga [Chinense] (live plant from Piedmonts) and another was Peri-Peri [Frutescens] (live plant from Duffy). In the spring, I took a bunch of pollen from the Peri and placed it directly on the stigma of the Naga. I didn't emasculate the Naga flower, so I don't know if the cross took or if the Naga set its own pod. But the pod DID set and I saved the seeds. I decided to try them out this year as an afterthought. I don't want to get too excited, but the stem of the flower and the flower itself looks very "Peri-Peri" to me. Upright, slender-stemmed flowers that curve at the top. Here are a couple flower pics (I already glued a flower lol). I'll grab a plant pic in a few. They're still small. One plant is in-ground and the other is in a bucket...smaller than 5 gallon.

It's still a wait-and-see thing.
Then I found this guy just chillin' on a tomato cage.

Your garden is kicking it!

All those pods look fantastic ;)

Keep doing what you're doing, as it's working really well!
Thank you, Scott! I guess it IS doing better than I give it credit for. I do have pods, so I'll stop complaining. Lol. Thank you for the encouragement.

I pulled my first ripe Bishops Crown today.
zeso9NT.jpg

And I pulled more squash.
IbL9eCg.jpg

2 squash and 1 zucchini got sliced up along with the Bishops Crown and a Bell from the garden, then added store-bought onions (I don't grow them) and some spices.
eLBPaPW.jpg

It all got fried up. This is overdone to me, so I always pull some out before it gets soggy. Lol

Nothing like veggies from the garden!

Can't beat garden fresh buddy!

The wife, aka LB, makes squash fried in just a bit of olive oil, and adds fresh garlic, salt, pepper, and romano cheese, with a bit of Italian bread crumbs. She cooks Asparagus in a similar fashion.
