BigCedars SuperHot Grow 2012

Hey Everyone :) 2012 will be my first full year being a member of this great forum. So, I figured why not do a start to finish growlog for the first time. Instead of writing down a journal of germination times, flower times, ferts, soils, plant out dates, etc.. like I have in the past.. I'll be using my growlog instead. There will be extra information that I'm sure the seasoned pros won't need to read but I'm sure anyone new to this hobby will enjoy the extra info I'll be posting. I absolutely love checking up on other members growlogs, It's my daily newspaper! I figured as much entertainment you all have given me this year.. It's time to entertain back. Hope you all enjoy.

One more thing..
Before we get started with the grow porn..
A special thanks goes out to anyone that has helped me out since joining THP. I appreciate it more than you know.

Alright, lets get this party started.

So 12/15 and 12/16 were the only time I had to do this unless I wanted to wait until January because of my work and family xmas parties. I have a greenhouse, which means I can harden off earlier than those who don't. I figured.. Why not start a couple weeks early!? So that's what I did :D

I'm using Hoffmans Seed Starting Mix for the first time this year. I can already tell this stuff is as great as people have said. It's so soft and fluffy, I have an extra bag.. I told my wife I'm puttin a pillow case over it and swappin out my pillow  I prepared everything 12/15

982.jpg

985.jpg

If you use hoffmans.. you have to soak it overnight or knead water into the soil in a plastic tub.. which is what I ended up doing after realizing it wasn't absorbing water from my spray bottle.. So after I did that, I prepped 4 72cell flats with soil, put 4 of each seed variety in the cups, let them sit for 8hours.

1003.jpg

After planting 288 seeds by hand.. I've realized that before this season is over.. I need to invent a faster way to do this.. my god that took way to long. All worth it though :)

1006.jpg

My grow closet.

1008.jpg

I'm using hydrofarm heating mats with hydrofarm heat mat thermostats set at 82 (the one further back in the closet is always warmer..)

1007.jpg

One more thing if you have kids.. My daughter use to love to open the closet door.. Now she likes to shut the door..
I came up with a solution for both the problems.
Bricks so she can't shut the door? Check
Dog leash so she cant open the door? Check.
Let the growing begin.

1010.jpg

The List
I would love to have 3 plants of each.. so I'm starting 4 of each hoping for the best. If I have too many.. Well, I'll find room or give them away :hell:

I will be keeping this posted every week with germination rates.

I'm just doing supers for the first time this year.
I have a good amount of non supers that I'm overwintering. I figure with what I'm growing, If something does cross..I'tll most likely be a superhot cross. And you can't go wrong there!

Brandon

I thought I'd throw my soil recipe out there. I'm no expert, but I will tell you that this mix freaking works better than any premium potting soil product. I had to make a new batch of soil earlier today and figured I should share the recipe :)

img2831d.jpg

So....
3.8 cu ft of peat moss... ($12.00)
1 cu ft of top soil. ($2.50)
20lbs of garden sand. ($2.00)
8 Gallons of perlite. ($4.00)

img2832xj.jpg

So far, $20.50... and easily 6 cu ft of soil..

That's the base.. Time for the magic.

7.5 Lbs of wormcastings ($7.50)
2 Cups of Alfalfa Meal ($2.00)
2 Cups of Bat Guano ($2.00)
2 Cups of Blood Meal($2.00)
3 Cups of Bone Meal ($2.00)
2 Cups of Kelp meal ($2.00)

$38.00 dollars for 6+ cu ft of premium soil :D

After amendments are added it will look like...
img2834i.jpg

All mixed up..

"Way to Grow"................Brandon!

I should be out cutting the lawn or something, but these glogs are keeping me glued to the seat.................especially this one.
All I can say is wowie......wow-wow! Its never too late to make a comeback, your plants look as healthly as can be. Theres still
a good season left and you'll be busy with those plants. Dust off the dehydarater, get the wood for the smoker, buy doze freezer bags
cause you gonna need'em!........................ha
,
Hey I like the "garden mix". That's what I like to do, gradually add the components around the edge while walking around the pile counter clockwise with a shovel. Toss the perimeter into the middle mixing as you go......like making an egg well in the middle of flour........walla, pasta dough...!

Great photo close-ups, I can't wait to see the ripened fruit shots. I'm curious to see some of those varieties that I don't have......... :tear:
Bring those Autumn colors home!

Greg

Brandon, glad to hear you're coming to the NWCF. Can you bring a couple bags of those yummy chips? Looking forward to seeing you and the family again.

That milk jug story? TOO FUNNY!!!!!

That is one funny tale, Brandon Cruel, but funny!

Maybe I should have put the Indian Carbon from Matt in the freezer.
It's one of the final three pods I'm trying; all the others are now frozen
for safe keeping. Some were getting sort of soft.

Glad to hear you are making NWCF, my friend; should be a lot of fun! I say, A LOT OF FUN
I probably will head up Friday afternoon, depending on what Chileaddict's plans are. I'm bringing
my back pack in case I need to bed down due to 'whatever reason'

Have fun in your garden, brother!

Paul, I dare you to eat the whole thing
I Kid! Don't do it, baddddd idea! That thing will definitely take you for a ride, no matter how you eat it. I'd be really interested to hear the SHU rating on those things. Speaking of the NWCF I need to catch up on the thread..get directions and start planning, it's coming right up! I'm gonna talk to Ann and find out when most people will be there, Saturday I'm guessing.. Can't wait! Have a good weekend buddy.

World of difference! Intetested to see the garage grow this winter. I've never seen yellow primo before. I would be willing to give my first born for those.

Thanks man, you and me both, should be interesting for sure.. I just hope it works. lmao, primo yellows? Grant might have some ;) It's actually a Primo X Yellow Bhut Jolokia and Grant named it the "yellow primo" That's my understanding of it anyway, I could be wrong.

Great comeback Brandon love the poddage that is great news that that your custom made soil is working out. That is crazy shot nine buds on one node hopefully they all hold strong for you. Awesome family shot, what is in your custom made soil?
Hope everything is going well for you and your family and the garden continues to thrive

Thanks Fernando. I couldn't be happier with it man. You motivated me to post the recipe. I'm good, fams good, garden is good :) thanks for the good words! I hope things are going great for you too bud.

Nice to see some sweet pods Brandon. You deserve it.

Thanks Jamie :)
I hope all is well with you brother.

Dude, that is literally the funniest pepper shit I have ever heard in my life. True story.

I saw Todd (TMudder) almost throw up eating the whole thing. I haven't tried more than a tiny piece when I was pulling seeds for stock...maybe have to give this one a try....

On another note...YOUR GARDEN LOOKS GREAT!! It is about damn time!! Gonna have a ton of OWs for that SuWEET growrage!

Lol. I'm glad you liked the story. I really wish we filmed it.. It would have hit a million views in a day lol. I'll have to look up Todds video for it, for him to almost throw up you know it's bad. I'll be interested to see where you put this guy compared to the Jonah you ate. I've literally never tried any bhuts that even come close. It's ridiculous. I'm getting pretty excited about the OW project :) Hope all is well with you buddy.

Welcome to the wonderful world of super hot pod reviews Brandon! Lol. Bro I gotta hand it to ya! You do great reviews!!! Those supers arent easy to talk through, thats for sure!!! Awesome job, and way to be descriptive!!! Matt grows some beauties!!!

Awesome pics and poddage Brandon! We finally got some summer weather over here lol. Like like your plants are soaking up the sun and spitten out pods for ya!
Good to see your plants are doing well bro!!!

Hey Jon! Thanks man. I honestly was a little freaked out the first time I tried that half of a douglah since i've never done more than a 1/4 pod. It's bad for sure, but I think alot of it is a mental game. Your body is telling your mind your going to die and you have to convince yourself otherwise lol. It's an experience I think everyone should try once for sure. I am loving this weather! Everyone I know is complaining about the oh-so-terrible 90 degree heat and I can't get enough of it! :) Thanks for stoppin by man. I hope things are good with you.

Wonderful spread, look forward to the first large harvest.

Thanks bud! You and me both. Looks like I'll have some hot stocking stuffers this Christmas ;)

Hey Greg, how the heck have you been buddy? Everytime I update my glog it always makes me realize how much more time I wish I had each day. Thanks for the compliments man, I appreciate it. I got the dehydrators ready to roll, I'm gonna try something new this year with powders, each variety gets its own spice jar.. I like to experient with dry rubs and seasonings and IMO peppers are the most versatile spice out there, I'm gonna find out what each are best used for and in what dishes. That's the plan anyway. Varieties you don't have? Well you will in time! I have quite the list of members that are going to be getting any seeds they want from me once the time comes.. You're definitely on that list my friend :D

Brandon, glad to hear you're coming to the NWCF. Can you bring a couple bags of those yummy chips? Looking forward to seeing you and the family again.

That milk jug story? TOO FUNNY!!!!!

Hey Ann. Thanks for stopping by! Told you I'd get some vaca time for it, I wouldn't miss it. :) Chips? I gotcha covered. I'll just bring a case once again.. Sounds like there will be a few more people coming compared to last year. Anything else I could help out with? I was already planning on bringing some goodies for people.. I may have a few too many seeds for some varieties... Sorry for all the questions, but does Saturday seem to be the day that everyone's going to be there? I can hang around for 3-5hrs fri, sat, or sunday so I thought I'd ask when most of the group will be there. I'm lookin forward to it! We have a babysitter this year so we'll be able to hang around alot longer :D Hope all is well with you and your family

Great stuff Brandon! I really like the mutant branch. I got some of that stuff going on here too. Always fun to look at the double pods and merged branches. You're gonna get a few good pulls before its all said and done in spite of your early season woes. Thanks for posting the Soil recipe, I have to go with all new next season...or sterilize the old stuff. I would rather not chance it and start fresh. Keep the pics flowing from here on in!!! I can't wait to watch all your stuff start to shift colors!

AWESOME, Brandon! Thanks for bringing the chips!

Yes, Saturday is the big day. Some people who live close by are going to come over Friday evening to hang out for a while, but the big party is Saturday. We have the picnic shelter from (9-7pm???), planning on eating around 3pm, Pure Evil contest some time, so come on over any time 11-12:00-ish. A bunch of us will be there, hanging out, sampling whatever shows up, smoking some pork butts..... If you want to bring a dish for the pot luck, that's up to you, just bringing the chips is great.

BTW, I stop by here regularly, just don't post much. Definitely enjoying your glog.

Thanks Shane! I hope so buddy.. All I'm hoping for is some seed and pods to send around to my THP friends, that's my biggest motivation really. If you wanna try some new soil, seriously try the recipe.. It's crazy good, I've never seen greener, more productive plants in my 4 years growing, and in such a short amount of time at that. I'll try to keep the pics rolling, my garden has been just as busy as I have been with work lately! I hope things are great with you and your family my friend. Good to hear from you buddy.

Nice plants. :)

I only sort of read the last three pages but you look like you've pulled it out of the fire! Love the before and after photos. I've definitely had a lot of those before plants that are sticks with new growth leaves trying their best to thrive but just not getting anywhere. It was all down to bad soil mix by me. Might have to copy your formula if I can manage it.

Thank you! I did pull out of the fire haha, pretty late in the season though, but thats okay, I hope to have the garage be a indoor superhot jungle this winter to keep em going and to give me something to do in the cold months :) I must say the biggest thing I've learned this year and the best advice I could give anyone new to this hobby is that it is ALL about the soil. Thank you for stopping by, I hope you have a great grow season, I'm jealous of all you getting started down under :)

That story about your coworkers had me laughing out loud in my office. Wow, great story!

Thanks buddy, it was one of the funniest things I've experienced with hot peppers lol. Good times.

Brandon that is a great recipe your plants seem to love it glad everything is working out for you buddy

Thanks Fernando. I think if I could change one thing, I would add a cu/ft or 2 of compost.. I'll probably try that out next batch. My late indoor starts are in the same soil and are thriving. I was hoping they wouldn't out grow the closet until late this fall when my garage is up and running but it looks like that won't be happening, growing too fast! They're only 5 weeks old and they look like my 12-14 week old plants last winter lol.

Thanks for the replies guys, it's my Friday so tomorrow I will get out and take some pictures and update everyone :)

Seems to be about update-thirty.

Lets start off with some starts...

Here's some of the late season starts that I potted up into gallon containers 2 weeks ago.
Also known as my "fertilizer-free" starts.
IMG_2827.jpg

Here are the same plants, they're all 6 weeks old give or take a day or 2
IMG_2950.jpg

They were not supposed to grow this fast! lol. I was planning on them being this size around the end of september in time for the garage grow, well, that didn't work out. They're going to out grow my closet here in a few weeks so it looks like I'll be hardening off plants in September lol.. Again, these have never been fertilized. I gotta tell ya, it's so nice not fertilizing starts every other week along with checking them daily for defiencies. They make my 14week old plants this past spring look like garbage. Shows ya what a 1/2 year of learning can do.

Here's 16 of em all in 1 gallon containers.
IMG_2970.jpg

Here's that Bih Jolokia Caramel I pictured last update.
IMG_2975.jpg

Alright enough with the starts..

A rather large infinity leaf, really??
IMG_2944.jpg

My 2year Yellow Bhut Jolokia, this thing is getting huge.
IMG_2889.jpg

I decided to try crossing a few varieties. Okay maybe 30. My daughters hair ties are perfect for marking which pod I crossed  after that I use tulle-like reusable produce bags to isolate it.
Hopefully... Yellow Bhut Jolokia X 7Brain Strain.
IMG_2887.jpg

Here's some tiny harvests, some pods are babies but I'll take em! And as Paul would say, every pod a victory :)

Thanks for checking this out.
I'll get to posting more pictures if I get a reply :)

This next set of pictures I wanna put the spotlight on my NOT Trinidad Scorpion Moruga Satans Strain.
The seeds came from my good friend Jack (superhot)

I have 5 plants out in the yard, 4 of which are starting to pod up and they all look like they should.. This guy on the other hand.. Not so much. I talked with Chris a little bit about this plant and he confirmed what I thought, that the way these unripe pods look is pretty abnormal, I've seen pods get a suntan and turn light purple but with this guy they're turning literally the darkest purple I've ever seen, some pods are actually black. It's pretty crazy looking and the pods definitely look hot as hell. I'm interested to see what color they ripen to and also how much of my face these things are going to melt off lol.

My Trinidad Viper X Purple Bhut Jolokia plants are FINALLY podding up. They've been dropping flowers for weeks now.
They just popped a few days ago, they're small for now but the shape and color so far sure looks cool. and... they're bumpy
