BigCedars SuperHot Grow 2012

Hey Everyone :) 2012 will be my first full year being a member of this great forum. So, I figured why not do a start to finish growlog for the first time. Instead of writing down a journal of germination times, flower times, ferts, soils, plant out dates, etc.. like I have in the past.. I'll be using my growlog instead. There will be extra information that I'm sure the seasoned pros won't need to read but I'm sure anyone new to this hobby will enjoy the extra info I'll be posting. I absolutely love checking up on other members growlogs, It's my daily newspaper! I figured as much entertainment you all have given me this year.. It's time to entertain back. Hope you all enjoy.

One more thing..
Before we get started with the grow porn..
A special thanks goes out to anyone that has helped me out since joining THP. I appreciate it more than you know.

Alright, lets get this party started.

So 12/15 and 12/16 were the only time I had to do this unless I wanted to wait until January because of my work and family xmas parties. I have a greenhouse, which means I can harden off earlier than those who don't. I figured.. Why not start a couple weeks early!? So that's what I did :D

I'm using Hoffmans Seed Starting Mix for the first time this year. I can already tell this stuff is as great as people have said. It's so soft and fluffy, I have an extra bag.. I told my wife I'm puttin a pillow case over it and swappin out my pillow  I prepared everything 12/15

982.jpg

985.jpg

If you use hoffmans.. you have to soak it overnight or knead water into the soil in a plastic tub.. which is what I ended up doing after realizing it wasn't absorbing water from my spray bottle.. So after I did that, I prepped 4 72cell flats with soil, put 4 of each seed variety in the cups, let them sit for 8hours.

1003.jpg

After planting 288 seeds by hand.. I've realized that before this season is over.. I need to invent a faster way to do this.. my god that took way to long. All worth it though :)

1006.jpg

My grow closet.

1008.jpg

I'm using hydrofarm heating mats with hydrofarm heat mat thermostats set at 82 (the one further back in the closet is always warmer..)

1007.jpg

One more thing if you have kids.. My daughter use to love to open the closet door.. Now she likes to shut the door..
I came up with a solution for both the problems.
Bricks so she can't shut the door? Check
Dog leash so she cant open the door? Check.
Let the growing begin.

1010.jpg

The List
I would love to have 3 plants of each.. so I'm starting 4 of each hoping for the best. If I have too many.. Well, I'll find room or give them away :hell:

I will be keeping this posted every week with germination rates.

I'm just doing supers for the first time this year.
I have a good amount of non supers that I'm overwintering. I figure with what I'm growing, If something does cross..I'tll most likely be a superhot cross. And you can't go wrong there!

Brandon

A few not-so-superhot pics.

Fernando, Thanks again for the surprise box of pods buddy!
Thought you would enjoy these.. Remember how I told you my daughter gets just as excited as me?

Helping me check everything out :D

Thanks again buddy, good times for sure :)

GREAT update Brandon. Very exciting pods you have in the garden for sure. I can't wait to see how some ripen. However, the best pictures are the ones of your daughter sorting pods. Truly classic. Some things can't be beat!

Chris

OK, I'm pretty intrigued by these. Especially the last two pictures. It looks like a possible C. chinense x baccatum cross based on stem attributes. It'll be neat to see how they ripen. :)

Chris

Thanks Buddy :D

Chris.. I have one plant putting out the real thing, well they look like your pods and Wayrights anyway.. But this plant is certainly not. It is a very odd plant as well.. Notice how long the pods hang, a good 4X longer than any other pod in the yard. Weird right? It just started podding up so the pods are still maturing but you'll get the idea...

I guess well call this the..

That is awesome Brandon glad you and your daughter enjoyed it. I barely just got the Butch t to ripen pods these guys where the last to set pods. Let me know how the 7 pod brown does I have extra seeds from this year in case your plant does not produce true pods.

Hummingbird ? Would love to have those little guys show up every season , id have feeders all over the place like iv seen on youtube vids.

Great updates Brandon! Glad to see you getting close! Fernando sure is a kicka$$ guy! Wish I could get my kids fired up about the garden. My youngest still helps when forced, and does a good job, but would really rather be playing Minecraft...oh well.

Bhut Jolokia Assam ???
I say "???" because every picture I've looked up of unripe pods show a lime green unripe pod, the pods on my plant are almost white. I'll be watching this guy.. Anyone else experience this?
IMG_3053.jpg

I have some Bhuts that are like this, very pale until they start to turn orange. Did you buy the seed as Bhut Jolokia Assam?

In fact, I used to get annoyed at the whole "ghost pepper" misnomer, but now I'm thinking with these pale suckers... maybe that's why some people started calling them ghost?

Thanks alot Chris! I have to agree with you. Anytime she shows interest in this hobby it truly melts my heart. She'll go over to pods in the yard and say pepppa!! and proceed to talk in detail about it (in her language) lol.. It's pretty cute.

I'm going to be sending you some pods here and there, for you to try and also grow, so expect a ripe one or 2 from the last picture ;)

Thanks Fernando! She definitely did :) Thank you for the 7brown offer buddy. I will keep that in mind. It's weird... Now Junglerains 7browns are podding up and they look just like Judys.. Odd. I'll just have to keep watch!

Also, keep a mental list of anything you like that I'm posting pictures of.. Your on my list for seed care packages this fall buddy :)

Hope all is well with you man!

Hummingbird ? Would love to have those little guys show up every season , id have feeders all over the place like iv seen on youtube vids.

Hey Todd! Thanks for stopping by buddy. I just looked up some hummingbird swarm videos, that's freaking nuts! I've seen 3 at once but 40-50? Crazy! I've had one land on my shoulder, and also bathe in the spray from the hose I was holding. Very cool experiences that I won't ever forget. Hope all is well dude!

I told you I was going to get these damn plants to produce if it killed me ;) Not gonna lie though, if it wasn't for the garage I'd be SOL though.. I'd be sending everyone green bhuts come october lol. Bad form. Fernando is one cool dude, I'm certainly grateful to have him as a friend. I dread the day Saydee gets into videocames and the alike and wants to do nothing but that. I can see it now.. I'm gonna have to get back into videogames to spend time with her lol. I hope things are all good in you neck of the woods Shane. Good to hear from you.

My little boy points at chilli pods and sauces, puts on a big frown and growls, "HOT!" so cute :D

HA! Now that is freaking cute! I told my wife and she responded "Awwwhhh that's so cute!" :) You should get that on video one of these days. That would be priceless! Glad you enjoyed the pod pictures buddy, thanks for stopping by. How's everything going in your neck of the woods? Doing a glog this year?

Hey Charles. How are you bud? I did indeed buy them as BJ Assams, from Grant. I looked up his pictures and his are definitely alot greener than mine.

That's interesting about your bhuts, mine are dark green for sure.. I think alot of these superhot varieties are a bit watered down if you will.. There's atleast 2 varients of every type. Give it 5 years. Now that's gonna be crazy. There won't be much that is actually stable. Thanks for stopping by and giving me your input buddy. I hope things are all good with you.

Bhut Jolokias... I have 4 or so growing right now that go by that same name and are very different. I grew some last year that I didn't like. Too much diversity to keep track of... just have to get lucky and hope your seed grows true next season...

Big C, sorry its been so long since I checked out your glog. Your plants are awesome! Love the pic where your holding the giant leaf of one them. That thing is huge! And the picture of your daughter holding the pepper is priceless :)
I'll tune in more often now that things are settling down
Oh and thanks for showing up at the chilefest. It was awesome going head to head with you for the contest! I didn't feel right til Sunday afternoon :hot:

Hey, buddy! It took awhile, but I finally got caught up with your grow.
I can't believe it's been so long since I was here. Your daughter is
turning into a real chile princess; I hope you and your family can
manage a visit some time! I forgot what an incredible variety of
exotic plants you had goin' there, bro; you have some awesome
pod pics! The TS Cardi/BJ is all pods!

I bookmarked your soil mix page. I like the idea of not having to
fertilize; the fish fertilizer I use is effective, but a bit labor intensive
or more than a few plants. Your starts look amazing, so I think the
soil mix must be a pretty good one. I like the idea of adding compost
to the mix as well.

It was great getting together at NWCF, what a great time for those of
us who didn't win the PE Popcorn Challenge! For the others, somewhat
of an aftermath   I really hope you can camp out next year with
your wife and daughter. That would be awesome fun.

Here's to a big harvest for you real soon

Hey Everybody!

Figured I'd mini update this thing.
I'll get replies out tonight, thanks to everyone that stopped by.

It looks like this will be the last update for awhile, it's a busy time of year for me and heading towards an even busier time, you learn to hate the holiday season when you work in retail. lol.. I still have plenty of work to do before the garage is up and running. Work that I will get done if it kills me.. Planning on taking a 3 day weekend here soon to get it all taken care of. The door still has to be insulated, flooring finished, and I'm waiting for the 1000 MH HPS systems to show up at my door step  I bought them from Apollo Horticulture so they should be good :D

Things are FINALLY starting to ripen up as some of the late bloomers are just now starting to pod up, so needless to say no garage=bad season for me. Its essential I get that thing up n runnin or all the dedication throughout the season will be for a few ripe pods, that's just not my style! lol.

Frost is about 3-4 weeks out for us, god willing. I heard it's already knocking on some peoples doors.. I can't imagine. You can feel fall in the air lately and you can tell the summer sun packed its bags and bought a one way ticket elsewhere. Good luck to everyone and I hope all is well with the rest of you guys :)

Thanks buddy! I'm hoping she stays interested.. for awhile atleast :)

Hey Aaron. Thanks alot buddy! I had a ton of fun at the CF. It was good tapping out together to win it. In case your wondering I've yet to eat popcorn since lol. I wish I had a chance to try your pizza! MAN that thing looked good. I hope things are well with you guys, I'll be keeping in touch :)

Awesome looking pod pics Brandon!!! You are a hell of a grower!!!

Thanks Jon! It was great to meet you and your wife at the CF :)

Hey Paul! Thanks for stopping by man, good to hear from you! I don't blame you man, I gave up trying, It's so hard to keep up with all these glogs. I remember last year, there was maybe.... 12 glogs? Ha, little bit different this year I'd say. Chile Princess.. ha! that's a great nickname. I hope we can manage a visit too buddy. Maybe we could all meet halfway and make it a day trip somewhere. It'd be a little over an hour drive for the each of us. That would be lots of fun. My wife and I would love that.

That soil was a mixture inspired by pepperguru. I loved the fact he barely ever fertilizes and grows monsters. When growing more than 40 plants, fertilizing is never a fun thing. When I do, I'm bubbling 3 30gallon storage containers of compost tea lol.

Thank you for all the good words buddy. Speaking of harvest... I remember you telling me your thinking about not growing supers next year.... You sure? :hell:

There might be a bubblemailer with your name on it in the future ;)

Keep that "Glass Half Full" attitude rockin Brandon...Only problem with that light is you probably made a half dozen watch lists when you ordered it! Can't wait to see the garage all lit up and running!

Hey Shane. Thanks buddy. Don't get me wrong, I always wonder what the season would have been like without the setbacks. Next year right? ;)

Thank you for reminding me! I'm already on the watch list I think!
I completely forgot to make a thread about this.. Guess I'll just post it in my glog.

I was in the front yard about a week ago.. I heard a low flying helicopter flying towards the back field by our house.. It came over the treeline and proceeded to fly lower.. lower.. and lower.. It was a dark green helicopter with the sliding door on the side, I'm no expert so I don't know what kind of heli it was.. It was dark green, no labels, numbers, or writing on the side. I could have thrown a rock at the guy hanging out the door. Dressed in dark green as well, I waved at the guy as they slowly flew by our house.. I'm thinking.. really right now?!? I thought it was some hospital heli landing in the field to save someone.. I knock on the kitchen window to get my wifes attention and point to the heli leaving.. maybe a block or 2 away, it circles around right back towards our house. Now I'm thinking.. Okay now this is getting weird.. what the ** is going on here? They circle our yard with the sliding door wide open, 3 guys staring down, some with equipment (cams I'm guessing) and proceed to fly back to where they came from. I'd be amazed if they weren't checking up on us.. There's no doubt in my mind that's what was happening.

I talked to a customer that's friends with a policeman and he told me somebody flying higher had to have said something or a neighbor and they sent in the heli for a closer look before they send in a team. Apparently they do that alot with ops on a "possible" large scale. Either way.. It was crazy to witness in person lol.. I'll be amazed if I don't have a knock on the door this winter. I'll make sure to get a good picture :)

Nobody wants to smoke what I have growing

Hope all is well buddy. I know the season has been treating you well :)

Wow, see that stuff freaks me out. I've heard a couple of real horror stories about some law enforcement using way too much force for a pot bust. Hopefully if they do knock it'll be reasonable. I'm not even sure what protection we have if we aren't growing anything illegal. There's got to be a better way to handle that sort of thing than to send a helicopter out. Feels so big brother.

Thats not good. I'm more concerned about criminals thinking I'm growing drugs than the police. I've changed from the purple grow lights to white fluorescents now but I still blocked out the window next to the hydro setup just in case someone notices the too bright lights on all the time.
