BigCedars SuperHot Grow 2012

Hey Everyone :) 2012 will be my first full year being a member of this great forum. So, I figured why not do a start to finish growlog for the first time. Instead of writing down a journal of germination times, flower times, ferts, soils, plant out dates, etc.. like I have in the past.. I'll be using my growlog instead. There will be extra information that I'm sure the seasoned pros won't need to read but I'm sure anyone new to this hobby will enjoy the extra info I'll be posting. I absolutely love checking up on other members growlogs, It's my daily newspaper! I figured as much entertainment you all have given me this year.. It's time to entertain back. Hope you all enjoy.

One more thing..
Before we get started with the grow porn..
A special thanks goes out to anyone that has helped me out since joining THP. I appreciate it more than you know.

Alright, lets get this party started.

So 12/15 and 12/16 were the only time I had to do this unless I wanted to wait until January because of my work and family xmas parties. I have a greenhouse, which means I can harden off earlier than those who don't. I figured.. Why not start a couple weeks early!? So that's what I did :D

I'm using Hoffmans Seed Starting Mix for the first time this year. I can already tell this stuff is as great as people have said. It's so soft and fluffy, I have an extra bag.. I told my wife I'm puttin a pillow case over it and swappin out my pillow  I prepared everything 12/15

982.jpg

985.jpg

If you use hoffmans.. you have to soak it overnight or knead water into the soil in a plastic tub.. which is what I ended up doing after realizing it wasn't absorbing water from my spray bottle.. So after I did that, I prepped 4 72cell flats with soil, put 4 of each seed variety in the cups, let them sit for 8hours.

1003.jpg

After planting 288 seeds by hand.. I've realized that before this season is over.. I need to invent a faster way to do this.. my god that took way to long. All worth it though :)

1006.jpg

My grow closet.

1008.jpg

I'm using hydrofarm heating mats with hydrofarm heat mat thermostats set at 82 (the one further back in the closet is always warmer..)

1007.jpg

One more thing if you have kids.. My daughter use to love to open the closet door.. Now she likes to shut the door..
I came up with a solution for both the problems.
Bricks so she can't shut the door? Check
Dog leash so she cant open the door? Check.
Let the growing begin.

1010.jpg

The List
I would love to have 3 plants of each.. so I'm starting 4 of each hoping for the best. If I have too many.. Well, I'll find room or give them away :hell:

I will be keeping this posted every week with germination rates.

I'm just doing supers for the first time this year.
I have a good amount of non supers that I'm overwintering. I figure with what I'm growing, If something does cross..I'tll most likely be a superhot cross. And you can't go wrong there!

Brandon you have the most epic grow log I have seen so far................nice and just jam packed with lots of good info.A lot of people will benefit from this- and talk too much?Nah...no such thing with good information. I am changing a few of my grow procedures because of it-so keep it up, good luck,....and I was just wondering if its tough to cook with all those plants on the kitchen floor?hehehehe-sorry-couldn't help it! That pic had me listening for cadence, as my first thought was of little soldiers as well!

Left, Left, Left, Right Left....ahhh, nevamind! lol.

Sorry bout the soil man, but it is definitely good that you got it under control. It is pretty funny, last year I had some mediocre results with Promix, and almost gave up on it, this year I think I love it, like love love it...lol. I just picked up another couple cu ft a few weeks ago and that should carry me through pot up. I think at most I will have about 70 or so to pot up (yea, yea, yea, planted like 250 and trying to pot up 70, blame it on first year "practice"), so a couple bags should work for me.

Honestly, it is one of those things. Do you need the "best" soil? No. Does it help? Yes...lol. For one thing I am not gonna skimp on it in the future.

Pretty soon you should be bringin those guys outside to get some sun and then they are gonna blow up. Youll never notice the setback.

Thanks Dave! That's quite the compliment :) I questioned for months whether or not to do a "glog".. Goin from the normal 30 plants I buy from nurseries, to 200+ from seed for the first time is kinda like learning how to dog paddle and then being thrown into the open ocean lol. So far so good tho! Good to hear it's getting some use. Cookin in the kitchen? Well, I did have some bacon grease pop onto some of the starts, burnt em a bit but they seem to be recovering just fine  I should post another soldier picture.. They look like they were in training back then compared to the ready for combat lookin plants I have now lol. I'm happy to say my next update will be the first GOOD news update I've had in like what.. 4 updates now? lol. Finally some smooth sailing for me! Thanks again for the compliments.

Thanks Matt. Yep, definitely won't be making that mistake ever again. I'm glad you found some soil that's working for you as well. Hey 70 plants is respectable though! You could have 5 plants and you'll still have more gut bombs than you know what to do with lol.. I'm with you though, as much as I wanted to get some discount soil from work.. It's just not happening. I'm gonna check out sunshine mix soil for plant out, calling today on bale pricing. If only I could plant some in the freaking ground.. Thanks for the reply dude!

Other than that does anyone here in WA know if there's anyone that sells promix in the area?! I've looked in quite a few places with no such luck. I'd like to compare sunshine mix pricing with it.

Brandon. I got Promix at Steuber Distributing in Snohomish last year. I also found Promix HP 3.8 cu.ft compressed bale at Renton Indoor Garden Center last month. Don't remember the price, but it was less than Steuber Distributing. I used Promix BX and HP last year and thought HP was great. Place in Renton is cash only and on 329 Wells Ave. S. 425-917-9000. Also, the Promix and Sunshine mix was the same price at Steuber Distributing.

Weekly Update.

First off.

I'm posting a completely positive update for once!
I got my fancy camera back up n runnin so no more crappy blurry pictures
And most importantly! After a strenuous 2month search I finally found my indoor green thumb

So I would say "hey, check out the pictures in weeks past and compare to my plants this week" but, this is something you gotta see.. the turn around is almost unbelieveable. This picture was taken 10 days ago exactly right as I figured out all my lighting height and soil problems.. I honestly thought I was too late and killed most of em.. Take a close look at all the discoloration, slow growth and crinkling on the leaves..

10 Days later. These next pictures have the exact same plants I posted above in them to give you an idea.

They look a bit different.

The youngest of my starts that I thought had a first class ticket to the yard waste bin are also coming back. Amazing how hardy these plants are even at a young age. Some didn't even have any leaves after the soil/light burn. Look a bit different now :)
IMG_1484.jpg

You know your a chilehead when you start 208 plants.. think they're dead.. start another 144.. your 208 come back.. leaving you with no room for the new 100+ plants, no pots, no lighting, but thennn you realize you have 4 inches of shelving space and can group your new seedlings into the cups you soaked the original seeds in
IMG_1489.jpg

Side notes:

- I've been using mosquito dunks for my fungus gnat problem, due to the fact I have to wait for some of the flats to dry out before I can water them with the BTI about 8 of the 12 flats have been "dunked" I also have sticky fly traps hanging in the closet. I haven't seen any slowed growth with any of the plants, I've seen the opposite actually. If anything I think they're just pissing my plants off more than they're doin damage. Either way I'm not taking the problem on lightly. Any time I see one flyin around the house I kill the bastard. Anything helps right? Here in a month they'll be outside and the new born natural predators will be hungry.. They'll have a nice fungus gnat salad to snack on.

-I stopped fertilzing my 6 flats that have the largest plants in them due to the size they've grown in 10 days.

-I cut lighting back on all plants to 12/12

-STILL aphid free!

-Most of the plants have pretty good lookin branches growing out the tops of the leaves. I'd post a picture but I've already posted 10 pics.. next week! I think this is due to them being pretty old/small for they're age and not being in the right conditions a few weeks back. Now that they are, they're playing catch up to where they should be for this age. And yes, I'm a bit worried about it lol.

Thanks for tuning in!
Hope everyone and their plants are doing well!

Brandon.

BTW, Thanks alot Richard for the reply on the promix. I did get in contact with those places to figure out pricing in such. It'd be a bit of a drive for me but I just might do it to try it out. Thanks again man.

[sub]Your plants look freaking outstanding! Nice job on the turnaround! Plant out is right around the corner!!! [/sub]

Wow Brandon! That is a comeback Robert Downy style... Hopefully I can post some pics like that in a few weeks! lol.

Those things look amazing. Very Greg-ish!

Keep it up and I am keepin a list of peppers I wanna try this summer......

Excellent start Brandon! I am very impressed how organized and well thought out everything is so far. What a great start. One of the biggest mistakes I made last year was to use any and every size and shape pot I could find for the seedling's first transplant. This resulted in WAY too much time organizing and trying to make them fit under the lights. I am excited to watch and learn from your growlog.

haha I did that this year, but I have ample room infront of a rather large south facing window... So I wasn't too concerned... Then once hardened off, I placed them all outside on a picnic table until I was ready to plant.

Worked pretty well, but I didn't have 200+ plants coming up at the same time... I kept it limited to about 70 during winter, and 144 (2x 72) now that its warmer... I have room for five I suppose, but I didn't want to get too carried away.

looking pretty fantastic :)

Lookin great man!!
You really have some healthy looking plants Brandon!
Those things will be monsters by June!!!

Great comeback buddy!!
You have an awesome pepper army growing there and soon to be deployed to the yard.
Your thumb is turning green my friend!!

Nice to see things turn the corner bro. Everything is starting to look healthy and happy again so nice work.

Thanks man! I had no idea that my plants would end up looking like they do now. I got lucky I guess. Very greg-ish is quite the compliment actually lol. Being as good as he is at growing is something I hope to accomplish some day. Peppers you wanna try will be sent to you asap if I'm sucessful!

Nicely done. They look great!

Thank you!

Wow!..............Smoking Hot.....Brandon,

What a turn around with your plants, plenty of nice new lush growth on your plants.
You have many varitions of plants I'm curious to see what the different peppers look like (when you move your photo set outdoors)..............ha
Nice job with the photography, your camera handles the full range of lighting density really well!
What's the plant count up to?
Another week or so your plants will be "elbowing" each other for space. My plants sre "pushing and shoving" for more room and light. This weekend I'll start potting up some of the most worthy of plants to 2gal containers, I'll probably transplant 10 plants a day.........more bags of soil.....huh?
How many plants can you fit in your greenhouse? I'm picking up some material this weekend to build a couple of 10 x 4ft temporary hoop houses...(inspired by AJ's)
I'm hoping we have a warm April so I can start hardening off the plants. The last 3 yrs have sucked...although this has been the mildest winter we've had in a long time. I'm thinking positive on the spring weather.....like the old days of having the tomatoes in the ground by May 1st...

Anyways....great update as usual with some excellent photos, info and discriptions.....
later,
Greg

curious about the "hot salt" I'm going to go search for it.

haha 72 x 5 =360 which is around the max capacity in my garden for pepper plants... haha, I have four trays going currently... two inside the garage, one on my desk under the light, and one outside on a piece of metal on a table... great germ rates from all of them thus far... the annums are popping up like crazy out of the out door jiffy greenhouse.

Thanks alot Greg! I'm interested as well. I can already tell that some are not going to be what their labeled as so it should be interesting to see what crazy unknown hybrid/crosses show up. Every plant that was yellow and purple turned back to the normal dark green except 3 plants.. they remain purple and the new growth goes from light green to purple as well. One of the trinidad vipers is the one I have my eye on.. I have 7 plants and they're all green except for 2, the big guy and then after starting some more of them from seed, one of the 3 new seedlings is purple as well. So something crazy went on in Cmpmans yard lol.. Also one of the 4 red savinas I just started popped up and the cotyledons are almost as thin as a fine line.. completely different than the other 3 normal looking seedlings.. keeping my eye on the guy as well. 2 gallon containers... phhhht. lol. nice job man. you gotta be so low on room!

Plant count? hmm.. good question.. gimme a second lol.. 272 with more poppin daily. That's quite a bit more than I was shootin for but to cut down on the pot situation I'm gonna try what some advice not to do (I've done it in the past with no problems) I'm gonna keep some of the new grouped seedlings together throughout the whole season. So I'll have a few plants with roomates :)

As for the greenhouse? It depends on whether or not I pot em up to 5gal containers.. then it'd be only about 40. kept in gallon containers or the 3X5in containers they're in now I could fit em all. I'm kinda debating on using them at all in the spring and just using them to speed the ripening process in the fall to be honest.. I had a ton of pest problems last year from them being so isolated from predators.. fungis gnat and aphid populations exploded until I took them out of the GH in late june. Some of the best plants I've grown in the past were never in a greenhouse.. I'll probably just put a few in the GH to compare to the others and put my mental debate to rest once and for all.

Good idea with the hoop houses.. You guys have a much harder spring than we do.. The only thing I'll be worrying about in april will be the occasional cold night and too much rain. I'm gonna harden off half of the plants in April.. the youngest will go out towards the end of the month since they still have sometime to grow before needing a new home. That way I'll also have a backup plan if something crazy happens to the first 6 flats. You just never know with this hobby lol.

Thanks for the reply my friend. Glad things are going well for ya.

Yeah 4 trays is plenty.. Hell one tray is plenty. I just have a problem with not being able to do anything in life in a small way lol. Kudos on being able to use the garage! I wish I was able to use my garage to start plants.. too cold unfortunately. To make it possible it would cost me quite a bit of money. Congrats on your start so far. As for the hot salt wayright actually made it himself last year.. I don't know the recipe but I'm sure if you message him he'll hook you up.

Thanks for the replies
Brandon

I just have a problem with not being able to do anything in life in a small way lol

I don't see that as a problem haha! But then I don't have a wife (much less one whose bothered by plants being everywhere). Yeah I love using the garage... Its one of the good parts about living in Florida haha.

Wow great pics. Very healthy and happy plants! Good luck this year!

Thanks Dude! Speaking of great pics and healthy plants.. I was just about to head over to your glog n see how things are going. I wanna see how your skyscraping annums are doing lol.

I don't see that as a problem haha! But then I don't have a wife (much less one whose bothered by plants being everywhere). Yeah I love using the garage... Its one of the good parts about living in Florida haha.

lol thanks Ken. Yeah my wife doens't like it, but she doesn't not like it either. I tell her it could be worse, I could like hanging out at the bar with friends, gambling, or putting money into a dozen fantasy football leagues every year lol. Yeah... You Florida kids make me wanna puke  I can only dream of having a climate like that! I just checked out your growlist, very impressive! Well on that note. I'm off to check out your growlog and drool over the weather. :)

You know, if your wife gives you too much crap about your peppers... you could tell her you've been thinking about moving to Florida haha. Property here is as low as I've ever seen it. In fact I'm looking at buying 1.75 acres with a mobile for under 10k. I figure I can fence in an area, and rent the mobile + the fenced area out to someone, and put in a pepper garden on the other 1.65 acres haha...

Thats not your typical price :P but, it is a fantastic one.
