BigCedars SuperHot Grow 2012

Hey Everyone :) 2012 will be my first full year being a member of this great forum. So, I figured why not do a start to finish growlog for the first time. Instead of writing down a journal of germination times, flower times, ferts, soils, plant out dates, etc.. like I have in the past.. I'll be using my growlog instead. There will be extra information that I'm sure the seasoned pros won't need to read but I'm sure anyone new to this hobby will enjoy the extra info I'll be posting. I absolutely love checking up on other members growlogs, It's my daily newspaper! I figured as much entertainment you all have given me this year.. It's time to entertain back. Hope you all enjoy.

One more thing..
Before we get started with the grow porn..
A special thanks goes out to anyone that has helped me out since joining THP. I appreciate it more than you know.

Alright, lets get this party started.

So 12/15 and 12/16 were the only time I had to do this unless I wanted to wait until January because of my work and family xmas parties. I have a greenhouse, which means I can harden off earlier than those who don't. I figured.. Why not start a couple weeks early!? So that's what I did :D

I'm using Hoffmans Seed Starting Mix for the first time this year. I can already tell this stuff is as great as people have said. It's so soft and fluffy, I have an extra bag.. I told my wife I'm puttin a pillow case over it and swappin out my pillow  I prepared everything 12/15

If you use hoffmans.. you have to soak it overnight or knead water into the soil in a plastic tub.. which is what I ended up doing after realizing it wasn't absorbing water from my spray bottle.. So after I did that, I prepped 4 72cell flats with soil, put 4 of each seed variety in the cups, let them sit for 8hours.

1003.jpg

After planting 288 seeds by hand.. I've realized that before this season is over.. I need to invent a faster way to do this.. my god that took way to long. All worth it though :)

My grow closet.

1008.jpg

I'm using hydrofarm heating mats with hydrofarm heat mat thermostats set at 82 (the one further back in the closet is always warmer..)

1007.jpg

One more thing if you have kids.. My daughter use to love to open the closet door.. Now she likes to shut the door..
I came up with a solution for both the problems.
Bricks so she can't shut the door? Check
Dog leash so she cant open the door? Check.
Let the growing begin.

The List
I would love to have 3 plants of each.. so I'm starting 4 of each hoping for the best. If I have too many.. Well, I'll find room or give them away :hell:

I will be keeping this posted every week with germination rates.

I'm just doing supers for the first time this year.
I have a good amount of non supers that I'm overwintering. I figure with what I'm growing, If something does cross..I'tll most likely be a superhot cross. And you can't go wrong there!

Hey Brandon, couple of quick questions. I may have missed it (at the bar rereading) but what do ou soak in, and how many bags did it take for your flats?

Thanks Homie.

Great set up, great variety of peppers, looking forward to seeing updates of the grow progress. Good luck!

Thank you! :)
Impressive superhot list! Goodluck this season and I will be following this thread closely.

Thank you :) Thanks to alot of great people I've met n chatted with.. It made it all possible.

No problem dude, Honestly I have heard of people using germination solutions, I know Greg (PIC1) does, I'm sure it helps out.. I personally have never used it, I tried a bunch of trail n error seeds this summer/fall.. I noticed plain ol tap water for 6-8 hrs cuts germ times almost in half. as opposed to dry seed into soil. Also, my soaked in water seeds (supers) did sprout in 5-7 days as opposed to my dry seeds that popped in the 14-20 day range. I don't think I'd want any quicker sprouting than 5 days lol.. good to have a break after the 10 hour drill to get em all in soil n on mats. Dry seeds are hard as a rock really, so when they become soft n flimsy after being soaked in water, the root pops through the seed alot faster. Kinda like lubing it up if you will  Anyway, one more thing I believe, but have yet to prove, is that soft soaked seeds also have less tendency to end up with the "seed helmet" problem (where the seedling cant push the seed cover off the starting leaves) Makes sense to me anyway. Once mine start poppin I'll be able to confirm that for sure :)

Good luck with your grow man!
Brandon

Hey Everybody. I wasn't lying when I said I'd be posting every detail of what I'm doing..
Today I ended up taking off the humidity flat tops and drying all the moisture with a towel. Been near 3 days and it's pretty humid in there, I've yet to spray the top of the soil, letting them dry out a bit isn't a bad thing :) Nobody likes damping off.

Also, if everything goes well, I should have some nice xmas eve/xmas day seedling hook pictures for all you guys

Thanks for checkin up.
Brandon

your on your way.... I'll start my seeds once the grow challenge is over... I am itching now as it's going to be 80's all week it sure doesn't seem like winter yet. I was out to my waist in the Atlantic surf fishing, and the water is still warm.

This morning I woke up to quite the surprise.. This morning was exactly 4 and a half days since they went into soil.. And I already have sprouts!

I thought I was seeing things, the earliest I've seen has been around the 6-7 day mark. That's also when I was using regular potting soil. I'd like to say the reason behind the early sprouts is hoffmans seed mix. It being so light n all I think the seedlings had a very easy time pushing through. Another thing, None of the seed shells even came up through the soil, they all went from hooks, to sprouts. The season behind this I'd like to say is from the 8hour soak they received before planting, the shells were so soft the seedlings just slipped right out no problem. It'll be interesting to see if I get any "seedling helmet" problems.

I know. I know. Shutup n post some pictures

SEED GERMINATION STATS
DAY 5

Habanero Hybrid XXL: 4/4 sprouts!

*** I knew the one non-super would win this race but not like this, this hybrid killed the race. 4 days? 4 for 4? really?! If your reading this Grant, They're the same seeds I sent to you, Germination rates are lookin just fine my friend :D

If you all are wondering about this variety I'm growing It showed out of nowhere in a habanero box from my produce wholesaler. Somewhat bumpy, tasted like nothing I've had before, this thing was huge. I'm hoping it grows out like the picture. And no, my hands aren't small

Back on track.. So.

Hab Hybrid XXL: 4/4 sprouts. 100% germination :)
7 Jonah: 1/4 sprouts.
TS Moruga Red: 2/4 sprouts.
7 Yellow Source 2: 1/4 sprouts.

8 up, 276 more to go.

One more thing to add, I checked the flats last night before the T5's went out.. I didn't even have a hook. Everything happened once the lights went down that night.. Earlier in the summer I was also running them 24/7 and I had later sprouts than this.. There's alot of debate of how long lights should be on or shut off at all.. It might have just been a coincidence but I must say, the little night time breaks they're getting have to be helping out, I keep my lights on 18/6. Another observation I figured I would share.

Brandon

Cool B looks like your going at it like a pro! this will be a fun thread to follow.

Thanks Ryan, I hope to have extra plants, and I certainly hope you want some of them. If all goes according to plan, ya gotta let me know what you would like. I'd love to see some starts take off in your grow tent. plus, I owe you! Hope all is good with you..

Brandon.

Way to go Brandon!
That's really quick with the first to sprout.
There are mixed opinions on constant lighting or having a dark period in regards to seed germination. I leave them on contant, that helps keep the top of the soil warm. I swear I walked out of the grow area for 1/2 hr and when I came back all my Peruvian Whites were up.
Maybe that's the key........quit looking, and the "shy seedlings" will come about.......ha
The Hoffman's Seed starter is a good one, I use that as a final sprinkle over the seeds, then a good misting of water with a spray bottle.
Good luck with the remainder of your seeds.

Greg

Off to the races man. Looking great, cant wait to see more.

Thanks Matt, same to you too.

Looking good Brandon. Ya gonna use any of the seeds from the package I sent? If ya harvested any, you might as well. They will grow you some monsters :)

Thanks dude :D I am indeed using some that you sent, 2 seeds from the nastiest looking bhut you sent are in the soil along with 2 from THSC I thought it would be interesting to compare the 2. Also, seeds from the TS scorpion you sent that had the fattest longest tail I've ever seen, I labeled. "TS Fat Long Tail" One sprouted this morning as a matter of fact, Thanks again Guru :) I'll keep you posted!

It's like an advent calendar, each day you get to see a new present ;) Looks like your off too a great season!

Thanks meat! I have a feeling these presents are going to be a bit labor intensive though lol. I hope your right, It's all gonna boil down to how the weather is this coming year. It'd be nice to see some serious sunshine here in the PNW.

Not even Christmas yet and you already got some serious sprouts! And thats a tall order of plants, 200!! But your well on your way. Definitely going to follow this thread. I will be starting my first grow season end of January and use the soaking technique you used, now that I know about it :).
Aaron

Yeah, I know what you mean, BigCedar. Last 2 days I re-potted 34 seedlings and I realized I underestimated how much work my list is going to be ;)

Thank you! If everything goes well I will be hitting you up wondering if you want some plant starts :) Just my opinion man..I've lived in W WA all my life IMO your gonna wanna start your stuff sooner than that. You won't be planting out until may, which is fine, but with the way the weather has been for the last 3 years.. The earlier the better. Thanks for stoppin by :)

Hard work pays off, that's what I keep telling myself. Really not looking forward to potting up my seedlings..
