Blisters LED Coco grow has reached it's inevitable end...

I've been away from the forum for some quite some time. Over the last 2.5 years I've been blessed with a son, have had to move to 2 different cities and transfer jobs twice. I really didn't have time or room to grow anything let alone focus on peppers. Now that I'm settled in and have a few extra $ on hand, I've been able to invest in a 180w UV Blackstar LED and have started growing in Coco.

Why coco? I've grown in soil before and had decent results. The problem was that my growing season is around 90 days. We don't get the heat or sun needed to grow super hots to their full potential. On top of this soil needs fairly large pots for the plants to really produce a large plant, but again we don't get the heat needed to let the pot dry out and stress the plant. I'd have great tasting peppers, but no heat.

I've done a bunch of reading (mostly the 420 sites) and it would appear that coco offers the ability to grow large plants in rather small pots. It offers a great root zone alternative that will allow you to develop massive roots. Once the root ball is fully developed, they fill the pot to the point that you can water every day (during growth), and every other day during fruiting. The ability to control the water/wilt schedule should allow the plant to stress out enough so that it produces nice hot peppers. We'll see how this works though.

Fertilizers I'm currently using are:

Botannicare
- CNS-17 Grow (stand alone)
- CNS-17 Bloom (stand alone)

General hydroponics (using a modified version of H3AD's mixture)

- Flora Micro
- Flora Bloom

Advanced Nutrients
- Monkey Juice A
- Monkey Juice B

Suppliments

- Botannicare Cal-Mag+
- Botannicare Huvega (nothing more than expensive dissolved epsom salt)

Problems experienced so far:

I had a bunch of issues getting the seeds started. They'd start, die. Next set wouldn't start. Set after that started and provided me with enough seedlings to get going.

Next problem. I started with Botannicare's CNS-17 grow. Everything started fine, seedlings were doing ok, but it wasn't too long in before I realized that I had a huge problem with my tap water. It's extremely hard. After a few weeks the leaves were going yellow and dropping. Especially when I added a small amount of Cal-Mag+. The problem drove me a little nuts and is why I have a 3 different ferts! I didn't know the water was the problem and tried a different brand. Oh well. I bought a TDS Meter and found that my tap water is a little over 500ppm. After I found this out, I switched to bottled water and noticed an immediate improvement.

I'm only growing two types of peppers so far:
- Yellow Scotch Bonnet (bought from Stokes)
- Bhut Jolokia (two strains. One from a friend and one that was bought off e-bay by my in-laws).

EDIT:

Newly added pepper! Jamison was kind enough to provide me with MoA Bonnets! They arrived today (Dec 31, 2013).

Just snapped a few picks of the pods on my Yellow Trinidad Scorpions in the Hempy bucket. Some are the classic scorpion shape while a few others have an inverted "innie" tail. Not sure what to make of it, but hope they'll still be blazing hot.

Typical look

Innie

I've noticed that the newer leaves have really flattened out too. It's like I've finally hit the sweet spot for the plants. I also noticed that I have a few small Jolokia pods forming on one of my plants Whooowhooo!

I agree with OK, and hope the weather gets it head straight for you!
Me too Scott. Me too. The weather is supposed to get sunny and hot for the next few days, but they are also saying it's sunny right now and we just finished a rather large thunder storm so I dunno...

Well you have pods indoors, that alone is a major accomplishment!
Thanks Scott. They're doing pretty good so far. It's also looking like I'll be able to get them outside for the next little bit. Forecast is calling for sunny skies and somewhere in the low to mid-20s. Celcius that is. Gave one of the green ones a try the other day. No heat at this point, just a sweet green bell flavor. Talk about a ton of seeds in there too! Gonna transplant a few more into hempy's this weekend. Especially the Jolokia's that are putting out pods. I want those to grow as big as possible.

Thanks JJJ! This particular plant is ahead of the larger one in a hempy bucket, well pod wise any way. Seems as though once they reach the walls of the pots they put out flowers and start to pod like crazy. The last time I potted one like this up it dropped a bunch of flowers. I think that once the hempy's start to flower, they'll really take off. I'm also considering bumping my solution up a bit. I'm still running 700ppm, but once they get as big as some of the plants I have I'm sure they'll need a little more.

yeah the ones i leave in the 3 inch pots put on pods in a couple months, if i transplant into 5 gals they take another month or so to start producing.

Another update. I've noticed that I'm getting great growth on the Yellow Trinidad Scorpion in a Hempy, especially since I've been able to get it out into the sun. It's been drinking up the nutes so much so that I had to pour almost 3 liters of water into the bucket before any started to dribble out the drain hole. It doesn't have as many pods on it as the other yellow scorpion in the smaller 5" pot, but it should catch up and surpass the smaller pot in no time. I added 3ml per 4L of Canna PK boost 13/14. I've had great results with it kicking my plants into flower with previous experiments with it.

A shot of the canopy until I can get some better pictures.

Outside yet?
Our weather is still being bipolar. One day it's sunny and hot, the next day it's blowing up a storm and dipping down to 10c. We're still getting lows of 2c at night if you can believe it. I've been putting them out during the day around lunch time because that's when I get home and that's when they can actually get some sun. I'm looking forward to the time when I can leave them out all day and night. From what I've seen so far, by the time summer actually get's here I'm going to have to increase the pot size to about 1.5g minimum and make sure that I'm watering every day. They really drink up the nutrients!

Those plants have great color!, Hope the weather starts treatin' ya right.
Me too. Unfortunately we're still only getting a few days of sun here and there. It's supposed to rain for the next few days and has been relatively cool. That said, I've taken a few pictures of my plants. I also spent a bit of time cutting off the really big lower leaves off a few of the plants.

As you can see at least one of my Bhut's is really putting out the pods. I still have to put this one into a Hempy. I can't thank you enough JJJ! You saved my Jolokia season!

Another Jolokia just starting to put pods on.

The biggest plant in a hempy still has to start putting on pods, but I'm sure it'll catch and surpass the production I'm getting from the smaller buckets later this year.

My Yellow Scorpion. Decent sized pods and quantity for such a small pot. These are still in 5" square pots.

I also have a J-MoA pod on the biggest plant in a hempy. It's certainly not your typical shape, but's it's a start. I can't wait to try these!

Fantastic! Those look like classics and miles ahead of my in ground Bhuts.

You're welcome. Thanks go to Jamison as well, he saved both out Bhut seasons.

Wow Neil!

You get my vote for best inside grow this year by a wide margin!

Plants AND pods are looking great!

How much outside time can they get each season? Sure seems cold in your locale.

Thanks Scott. They are doing far better than I had ever expected them to! My growing season is around 90 days so as you can imagine I have to really start early if I want the superhots to actually produce. In fact this will be the very FIRST year where I'll be able to actually have ripe Jolokia's and Scorpions. I've just had no luck growing in soil. Heck I even overwintered the Scorpions and had 4 year old plants. They just never produced in soil. On the other hand, coco has been an ENTIRELY different story. I've got more pods on one single plant in a 5" square pot of coco than I had gotten out of the entire 4 years from the Scorpion I had in a large bucket of soil. It's crazy.

A bit of an update.

Yellow Trinidad Scorpion
This one just kept growing and producing in a 5" square pot so I finally decided to pot it up and put it into a Hempy bucket. The bucket is quite a bit bigger than the other buckets I had so I drilled the hole a bit hire and added more perlite. I had also run out of my standard GH brick coco so I fell back on the fine espresso grind coco I had from a previous attempt. It was way too fine and packed up like you wouldn't believe. I was only top dressing about 3" or so, so I cut it with some coarse perlite to lighten it up. The important take away here is that not all coco is created equal!

This is the original Yellow Trinidad Scorpion that I had put into a hempy bucket. It's growing at a crazy rate! All the yellowish leaves are the new growth. It's put on about 3-4" of new growth since I've put it in a hempy and have been able to get it outside into the sun.

Bhut in a hempy
This is one of the original Bhut's I had put into a hempy bucket. It's got 1 lonely pod on it at this time. It's starting to put out buds, so I'm expecting it to take off at any time now.

Bhut #2 in a hempy
Like the Yellow Scorpion, this little Bhut just kept spitting out the pods despite being in a 5" pot. I decided to put it into a hempy and see how she does. It's looking good so far!

Bhut in a 4" round pot.
This one kinda makes me chuckle. Small little plant, but an abnormally large pod growing on it. Doubt I'll keep all my Bhut's that I have growing, but this one is a fighter for sure.

Thanks for reading.

Edit: Realized that one of the pics was labelled as a Bhut, but it was actually a scorpion. Changed it to the correct picture.

Wow, I can't believe I just found your blog. Your plants look fantastic! The plant in the above pic, especially. I bet that pod set on the first flower that plant spit out. That doesn't happen often. That's testament to IDEAL growing conditions (and a guru for a gardener!). Good work!
I've got some catching up to do...
