Blisters LED Coco grow has reached it's inevitable end...

I've been away from the forum for some quite some time. Over the last 2.5 years I've been blessed with a son, have had to move to 2 different cities and transfer jobs twice. I really didn't have time or room to grow anything let alone focus on peppers. Now that I'm settled in and have a few extra $ on hand, I've been able to invest in a 180w UV Blackstar LED and have started growing in Coco.

Why coco? I've grown in soil before and had decent results. The problem was that my growing season is around 90 days. We don't get the heat or sun needed to grow super hots to their full potential. On top of this soil needs fairly large pots for the plants to really produce a large plant, but again we don't get the heat needed to let the pot dry out and stress the plant. I'd have great tasting peppers, but no heat.

I've done a bunch of reading (mostly the 420 sites) and it would appear that coco offers the ability to grow large plants in rather small pots. It offers a great root zone alternative that will allow you to develop massive roots. Once the root ball is fully developed, they fill the pot to the point that you can water every day (during growth), and every other day during fruiting. The ability to control the water/wilt schedule should allow the plant to stress out enough so that it produces nice hot peppers. We'll see how this works though.

Fertilizers I'm currently using are:

Botannicare
- CNS-17 Grow (stand alone)
- CNS-17 Bloom (stand alone)

General hydroponics (using a modified version of H3AD's mixture)

- Flora Micro
- Flora Bloom

Advanced Nutrients
- Monkey Juice A
- Monkey Juice B

Suppliments

- Botannicare Cal-Mag+
- Botannicare Huvega (nothing more than expensive dissolved epsom salt)

Problems experienced so far:

I had a bunch of issues getting the seeds started. They'd start, die. Next set wouldn't start. Set after that started and provided me with enough seedlings to get going.

Next problem. I started with Botannicare's CNS-17 grow. Everything started fine, seedlings were doing ok, but it wasn't too long in before I realized that I had a huge problem with my tap water. It's extremely hard. After a few weeks the leaves were going yellow and dropping. Especially when I added a small amount of Cal-Mag+. The problem drove me a little nuts and is why I have a 3 different ferts! I didn't know the water was the problem and tried a different brand. Oh well. I bought a TDS Meter and found that my tap water is a little over 500ppm. After I found this out, I switched to bottled water and noticed an immediate improvement.

I'm only growing two types of peppers so far:
- Yellow Scotch Bonnet (bought from Stokes)
- Bhut Jolokia (two strains. One from a friend and one that was bought off e-bay by my in-laws).

EDIT:

Newly added pepper! Jamison was kind enough to provide me with MoA Bonnets! They arrived today (Dec 31, 2013).

Amazing how much growth you get in such small pots. Maybe I'll try coco some day too. And now I know where to come back for for info!

Thanks plaisir8. The overall size of a plant that you can grow in a small pot and hydro is pretty amazing. I've had pretty good results with coco, but it doesn't seem typical. I'm leaning towards not all coco being the same.

Took a bit of today but I read through your glog, great tips in here, nice journaling.
Definitely going to try some things out :)

Glad you stopped in and found some of it useful. I've been trying to keep it updated as close as possible for what I had done throughout. Still have about 2 months to go before my season starts to wrap up. Hoping to get a bunch more pods in the meantime.

Your plants look awesome, Blister. I'm planning on trying both coco and soil next year. See which one I have more success with. Beautiful pods, too!
Thanks Niclassj! If you do go with coco next year, do a bit of research for reputable brands. Not all coco is equal. Some has more salt content than others and requires a lot of washing. Some can be used right out of the bag, or just after being expanded. Some is a really fine espresso grind while others are coarse. If you go with coco, hydro nutrients are a must.

I couldn't wait any longer and decided to give one of the peppers a try. They're still pretty orange and have yet to develop full heat and flavor. These are the first pods that started to grow as well. It's got more of a green bell pepper taste going on with decent heat. I picked the smallest pod off of this plant.

Pod in hand

The part I bit off.

I wasn't about to do a whole pod for my first go round. It was oily! Smelled like a green bell with a bit of a twist. Not sure what though. It had a slow build to a long burn. Felt like my entire tongue was slapped by a ruler. Made my eyes water, gave me goose bumps and now I have cramps. I can still feel where it was burning on my tongue.

I gave the pepper a bit of a squish and my ol' lady gave it a tiny lick. Really got her good. Her eye's were watering and had to wipe her tongue and eat freezies. Pretty impressive that's for sure. Got lots more on the way!

I had one nickel sized Red Trinidad Scorpion ripen up. It was the first pepper the plant put out and never really grew. I figured I'd pick it and see how it tasted. First pepper set isn't THAT hot right? I'm sure glad I resisted the urge to pop the whole thing in my mouth.

The pepper is pictured next to a quarter. As you can see I only took a small bite. The heat hit hard and fast. Gave me full on goose bumps. It was an all over burn. Back of the throat, all over the tongue, roof of my mouth. Taste? I'm not sure. Is blinding pain a flavour? From the little flavour I could taste before the heat kicked in it was quite nice. Almost jolokia like. I offered bite to the significant other, but she said she could smell it as soon as I bit into it. She didn't want anything to do with it after seeing the pain I was in. I was drooling like crazy. I burped it up well into the night. Given how fast the heat sets in, I'm thinking it would make a great wing powder when mixed with the slow building and long lasting burn of the Jolokias.

yeah maybe i should have done this instead of popping a whole reaper in my mouth.

Looks like your oak table needs to be poly'd =]

I've been looking at my J-MoA's and I'm really not sure what they're growing into... Almost looks like a cross between a Scorpion and Bonnet. Take a peek

Biggest pod and quite ripe.

Non-typical pod with lots of bumps

Similar bumps, but notice the little tail.

Variable pods

More pods with tails and bumps.

One of the other pods kinda looks like it has some jolokia in it.

Looking forward to trying them.

Neil

I had my first MoA yesterday -an utterly delicious pepper! A much more delicate flavor than a hab, not as hot, much sweeter.

I think Stickman has pod similar to yours. My early pods were highly variable, now they are just variable, but leaning toward the classic shape in some cases. Have found an A grade pod yet.
The shape seems to "normalize" as the plant matures. Today I got some mesh and isolated a little limb of buds, Hope it works.

Lookin' good, keep the faith.

Just took a big bite of it now. Definitely WAY sweeter than a hab, but this one has very little heat. It's almost to the point of Jalapeño. These have a thick wall and a small amount seeds. Very good flavor.

EDIT: considerably more heat towards the stem side. Ate over half of the pepper before it kicked in. Not on a hab level for heat though.

Pod in hand

Nice bite off the end. Thick walls on this one.

Pretty fantastic flavor.

EDIT: for pics

Neil

I would have to agree with JJJ's analysis, mine did the same thing. And I thought they were a cross; round two pods are very MoA looking. But as Pic 1 mentioned a while back, they all taste good!

It's interesting that you and JJJ say that. I have a bunch of buds that are on there way and will have to wait and see how they turn out. The flavor is definitely there. Are the thick walls common? It almost had the crunch of an apple when I bit into it. Pretty cool.

Neil

Yes, mine have the thick walls.

I de-seeded and froze several this morning, have yet to taste one of mine, but will once all the traveling is over this month. I've been saving the MoA's, White Bhut's, and Jigsaw's for sauces. I have quite a few MoA's at the green stage, they sure did take their time podding up this season!

I'm still waiting on mine to really pod up. I only have a handfull on my biggest plant. Not sure if it'll actually make it to the end of the season and give ripe pods. The race is on! In the meantime I got a small harvest off my biggest producing Jolokia plant. Going to dry and make a powder out of these for hotwings!

Neil

HA! The top right pepper has a small chunk torn off it. This happened when I was picking them. I took it off and threw it into the chili smothered pork when my ol' lady wasn't looking. Half way through dinner she said, "this is pretty hot considering it's just cayenne's..." Granted there are 16 cayenne peppers in the dish already, but the Jolokia added a real nice slow building burn to it all. I've literally got sweat on my scalp right now. Man what a great feeling :)

Neil

I figured that it was about time to get off me arse and do a major update. I've decided to cull the two "yellow" trinidad scorpions. One was absolutely huge, but it simply was't producing anything. I've got about 3 new pods on it and a bunch of little buds, but they won't have time to ripen before my season comes to an end. Rather than being yellow, they turned a brownish colour and had very little heat.

Root ball from the hempy. The roots were growing into the perlite as expected and held almost half of the perlite when I took it out of the bucket.

Blurry pic of the canopy from the largest yellow scorpion.

My J-MoA after I dolled it up a bit. Just like JJJ said, the first batch of pods would be irregular, but the second batch would start to show the correct shape. It's starting to spit out pods.

On to the Jolokia's. I have two in 5" pots.

Dang. Ran out of room. Need a bump to get the Red Trinidad Scorpion up.

Neil

Thanks for the bump juanitos!

This is my Red Trinidad Scorpion. It's blazing hot! Glad I planted some of these and decided to keep one plant. Should be able to replenish my seed stock now. It's not producing much for pods though. Not sure if that's typical for the plant or not. There are a few other pods on it, but this is the only ripe one at the moment. Decent size and shape.

Edit: I've now run out of AN Monkey Juice so I've switched over to CNS17 Bloom. I've been feeding at a strength of 10ml/4L. This gives me total ppm of approx. 750ppms NaCl. Should be interesting to see how it performs over the next few weeks.

Neil

Thanks Scott! Got a few more into the dehydrator the other day. Made the house WREAK of peppers, but in a good way ;).

Ever since Jamison so generously send me some J-MoA seeds earlier this year, I've only had ONE dish on my mind. I've harvested enough pods to finally give it a go with the correct pepper. Here is a partial ingredient shot...

I've also had another small harvest of Jolokia's and Red Trinidad Scorpions the other day. They're all dried up and ready to be turned into wing powder! The stuff I had previously received from a friend of mine just simply doesn't compare to the heat in the ones I grew.

Hoping to post more updates later tonight...

Neil

Finished the jerk pork. It's quite a bit different than doing it with habs. Much milder 'hab-like' flavour and a very distinct bonnet taste. So goooood! Heat was mild, but more than I expected. Still got a bit of a sweat going. Jerk pork sandwiches for lunch tomorrow.

Gotta say a big thank you to Jamison for providing the original seeds. I think I may even try and overwinter this one.
