Blisters LED Coco grow has reached it's inevitable end...

I've been away from the forum for some quite some time. Over the last 2.5 years I've been blessed with a son, have had to move to 2 different cities and transfer jobs twice. I really didn't have time or room to grow anything let alone focus on peppers. Now that I'm settled in and have a few extra $ on hand, I've been able to invest in a 180w UV Blackstar LED and have started growing in Coco.

Why coco? I've grown in soil before and had decent results. The problem was that my growing season is around 90 days. We don't get the heat or sun needed to grow super hots to their full potential. On top of this soil needs fairly large pots for the plants to really produce a large plant, but again we don't get the heat needed to let the pot dry out and stress the plant. I'd have great tasting peppers, but no heat.

I've done a bunch of reading (mostly the 420 sites) and it would appear that coco offers the ability to grow large plants in rather small pots. It offers a great root zone alternative that will allow you to develop massive roots. Once the root ball is fully developed, they fill the pot to the point that you can water every day (during growth), and every other day during fruiting. The ability to control the water/wilt schedule should allow the plant to stress out enough so that it produces nice hot peppers. We'll see how this works though.

Fertilizers I'm currently using are:

Botannicare
- CNS-17 Grow (stand alone)
- CNS-17 Bloom (stand alone)

General hydroponics (using a modified version of H3AD's mixture)

- Flora Micro
- Flora Bloom

Advanced Nutrients
- Monkey Juice A
- Monkey Juice B

Suppliments

- Botannicare Cal-Mag+
- Botannicare Huvega (nothing more than expensive dissolved epsom salt)

Problems experienced so far:

I had a bunch of issues getting the seeds started. They'd start, die. Next set wouldn't start. Set after that started and provided me with enough seedlings to get going.

Next problem. I started with Botannicare's CNS-17 grow. Everything started fine, seedlings were doing ok, but it wasn't too long in before I realized that I had a huge problem with my tap water. It's extremely hard. After a few weeks the leaves were going yellow and dropping. Especially when I added a small amount of Cal-Mag+. The problem drove me a little nuts and is why I have a 3 different ferts! I didn't know the water was the problem and tried a different brand. Oh well. I bought a TDS Meter and found that my tap water is a little over 500ppm. After I found this out, I switched to bottled water and noticed an immediate improvement.

I'm only growing two types of peppers so far:
- Yellow Scotch Bonnet (bought from Stokes)
- Bhut Jolokia (two strains. One from a friend and one that was bought off e-bay by my in-laws).

EDIT:

Newly added pepper! Jamison was kind enough to provide me with MoA Bonnets! They arrived today (Dec 31, 2013).

Wow, I can't believe I just found your blog. Your plants look fantastic! The plant in the above pic, especially. I bet that pod set on the first flower that plant spit out. That doesn't happen often. That's testament to IDEAL growing conditions (and a guru for a gardener!). Good work!
I've got some catching up to do...
Thanks dash! It's definitely been a learning experience. I may even get some ripe pods this year too... It's been a long few years trying to get an actual ripe Bhut that I can eat fresh. I've had powders from a friend of a friend, but I don't think they've fully reached their heat potential. Fingers crossed that mine do though.

Very nice Neil!

I hope the 90 days you have treat the plants well. Amazing growth on that Bhut too!
Thanks Scott. I'm hoping that we get some scorching hot 90 days to help the plants reach their full potential. It was pretty hot the other day and I managed to sun scald a bunch of the young leaves on some of the plants. So far the season has been pretty odd. Hot, cold, hot, cold, rain, hail you name it.

Whoa. Great grow and great GLOG Neil! Learned a lot from you here. Plants are looking spectacular to say the least. I'm sure the load of ripe pods you reap this year will be plenty to make up for years past. And really this is your second grow of the season! Glad you got some true pods on the Bhuts now. I am using a bark mix this year, soil really didn't work well for me last season, either. After reading your glog I think I may play with some coco next season. Def going to try out the nute mix you've been using. Wicked work.

Thanks Aaron! I'm glad that my foray into coco and hydro nutes was able to help in a small way. I spent so many hours reading through the 420 sites that I'm now probably on the government's "watch list"...

And I guess this is my second grow of the season. I was blessed with seed from both JJJ and Jamison. Both pulled my season out of the fire with true seed for Jolokia and J-MoA's.

Neil

Thanks Scott. They'd look even better if I would quit burning the crap out of them in the sun! We've had a few days here where the uv was way up and most of the young tender leaves just burned up. Oh well.

Just put my last Jolokia into a hempy bucket. I think that should be about it. This is another plant thats been producing quite well despite being in a 5" square pot. I have one bucket left and I'm reserving that for another J-MoA.

Rootballs of this size is becoming the norm for my plants. They're almost to the top of the coco too. This one ended up with the roots being a little bit brownish. Probably should have used the Cannazym more often.

Final home for the season.

Plants look great!
Pods are gorgeous, I think you're gonna love the flavor and fire of a fresh bhut straight of your plant.
Thanks JJJ! I love the flavour of the powder and can only imagine what it's going to be like fresh. I potted up my final Jolokia today. All of them have decent amount buds. End of the season should be good for heat!

Since everyone else has posted pictures of food in their glog...

Did up a Jerk pork yesterday and am using the leftovers for jerk pork sandwiches. Rolls, garlic butter, yellow and red peppers, plus some onions.

Leftover pork shoulder roast. Wanted to get a bit more bark on it.

Shaved so thin that it only had one side...

Lightly grilled buns, cheese, and some fried onions, yellow and red bells.

That looks fantastic!!

I love to make jerk pork. I use onion tops as my base -put 'em in the blender, with the vinegar and spices,
Stand around the smoker, pokin' the meat with a stick, drinkin' beer.

A smoker is on the list! I made this one in the slow cooker until it hit 110f then moved it to the top rack of the gas grill and finished it at 160f. All I have at the moment is a little smoker box that holds chips between the burners. Not ideal by any means.

Nice sandwich, you going to start adding more spicy than bells soon?
The bells are just the dressing. There's 8 habs in the rub/marinade. Certainly won't win any heat awards here on THP, but it's not bad for a bit of zip.

I've got my eye on a smoker, just trying to figure out a way to physically get it home...

I was able to go through your whole glog...kickass my man!!! Exactly how a glog should be done...keep up the good work...

Thanks sp33d! I've been trying to document everything that I've done so hopefully when I go back to it next year I can remember how I did it! Got a few more ripening now :)

I've run out of the Flora Bloom and rather than buy a new bottle, I've decided to use up the rest of my supply of Monkey Juice. Once that is gone, I'll switch up to the CNS17.

Neil

Took a bit of today but I read through your glog, great tips in here, nice journaling.

Definitely going to try some things out :)

Your plants look awesome, Blister. I'm planning on trying both coco and soil next year. See which one I have more success with. Beautiful pods, too!
