CaneDog 2020

2020 is underway, so it's time to start the new season's glog!  Odd times though, as I'm still harvesting stragglers from last season while the earliest of my 2020 starts are already up.  Grow areas are a bit disorganized as a result

This season's grow should be a little more balanced than last season, though I'll still have a ridiculous number of rocotos - many OW's plus a bunch of new varieties - and quite a few carry-over OW wilds, too.

A big "thanks" to all who shared seeds with me for this season.  I'm appreciative and excited to have lots of cool varieties in the mix, many of which I got to watch you grow last season and can now try myself.  I think I'm current with everyone, but if by any chance you were expecting seeds from me that may have slipped through the cracks just shoot me a PM.

As I mentioned, things aren't super organized right now, but here's a few pics anyway.

I planted a few seeds early, just because I couldn't hold off the extra few weeks without planting something.

Amarillo de Arequipa Rocoto just popped- Thanks CTB!

Ecuador Sweet Rocoto twins - and a big shout out to the two peeps who sent me seeds for these. Both sources germinated and I'm really happy to have them growing.  Disclaimer: they may look overly wet, but these just got sprayed (to avoid HH's) and it's a very porous medium.

Put another few rocotos in to soak today.

This is a galapagoense that popped a few days back, exactly 100 days after sowing.

And this pod contains Jalapeno Zapotec x Purple Jalapeno F1, one of a couple F1 JZ crosses I'll be growing out this season. The other is Tekne Dolmasi x JZ.

Finally, I got a solid recommendation on a new media mix I'll be trying out this season in a few variations. The mix is heavy in partially composted bark fines, a fir/hemlock mix as pine's hard to get locally. It's proving to be a veritable mycelium factory.  Bodes well for good symbiosis with the appropriate fungal species this year.

Heck, they're even fruiting out the drainage holes...  :)

That's it for now.  Good luck to all in 2020!

Good news from the Coleman this morning, with CTB's variegated jalapano showing up en force.  I planted the annuum mostly in 5's, but an extra fell in with these and I left it for greater odds.

More to choose from  :)  but I'll probably have to cull  :(

Hadn't seen the "post to index" bug in a good while, but it made this simple post quite difficult.  I'd been hoping it was gone for good.

Hats off  \o_ for the crosses, CD. I like watching
others do them, but don't have the patience for it.
I have to stick with spurious crosses and then try
to make do with them!

You inspire, my friend!

So what kinda of success rate do you get on your crosses, eh. [emoji3166][emoji848]

I don't really do a lot of crosses, but I generally have good results with what I've done.  I struggled a bit with pollination last season because the weather was so uncooperative and caused a fair amount of drop, but usually getting them to take isn't an issue.  Also, my focus has been on predictable results, so I've selected parent plants based on their specific genetics and made pairings with strong genetic compatibility, even when crossing different species.  All in all, the crosses I've chosen to do are "easier" than a lot other people's who are trying more challenging combinations in the hope of more unique results. Even when they take, those types of pairings are much prone to viability issues than are my more straightforward ones.

I do intend to try a couple more difficult/unlikely crosses this season though, including an interspecific pairing of 26 chromosome species, The information I have suggests a very low chance of success, but it's fun to roll the dice sometimes.   I'll just be sure to do something cool and predictable too, so I won't feel too bad if the others fail ;)

Holy eff! Where have I been? And why is everybody so non-chilant about the Gleaming White Jalapeño that looks amazingly?!?! I must have a source for these. Lol. Amazing!!!

The variegated japaenos have been coloring up since seeing the light, but not completely.  I notice one seems to lack the anthocyanin in the stems the others have. Possibly the one just hooking, too.

Got interrupted right after dropping 5 of saiias' guntur sannam and when I went back a while later I ended up planting 5 more.  Good % at 10/10.

I have two of the Tekne Dolmasi x Jalapeno Zapotec F1 and the first is about to open flowers.  I was hoping these would be bigger. They're not small, but they're certainly not the monsters I was hoping for, either.  Hope they still get a little bigger.

wow just when I think your plants cant get any better!

those variegated jalapeno look really cool!  if they do well please save me some seeds.

You bet!  There are two that show strong variegation already in the cotyledons, which I expect will get the special treatment and isolation.  I'm a bit tempted to cross it with a Jalapeno Zapotec x Purple Jalapeno F1 plant just to see what comes of it, but that would be the definition of a chuck-it-and-chance-it cross.

I'm way behind and only went back 4 pages or so, and boom! You're killing it again ;)

Thanks Devv.  Good to see you active on the boards again - your PaulG crosses are looking great!  What timing, huh?  You don't have to go to work any longer and now they tell you you have to stay at home    Hope things are good!  :)

Yeah almost 20 pages so far! Wow :-)

Yeah   much like my pepper grows it seems to add up in a hurry  :)  Those plants you got from Jukka look great.  Nice to have that resource nearby.  Seems you're poised to have monsters again this season like you did the last.

Thanks GPR.  Looking forward to seeing what you'll have happening this season.

Plants will do even better this year since I can babysit them every day while remote working. Never had that opportunity before in my life, so that initial hardening off always had to wait 2 weeks or so more than it should have. Same with potting up. Are you working from home now?

Yep.  It definitely helps during the transition season.   I recently moved the majority of my new wave of rocotos from T5HO's into southern exposure and after several cold crappy days it's warm and super sunny today.  Even set back from the window, some of them are going limp from the change in conditions.  Tough here with the big swings in weather.  I had cold temps, wind and hail yesterday, but it's almost like summer outside today.

I can't imagine what your rocotos will look like with a couple-weeks' head start on last year.  Hope it means more pods will ripen for you by the end of the season.

Same weather here, brother. I still have the rocotos in
the greenhouse with door open on sunny days.

Still too cold at night (mid-30s) to leave them outside,
and no sunny windows :tear: .

No sunny windows is a handicap - especially with your big grow this year.  Having that greenhouse should help, especially once you can clear out the rocotos  I really hope this current weather pattern is our last wintery one.  Once all the rocotos can sit outside 24/7 things should be much more manageable.

Yeah, buddy, I am looking forward to that.
I need to make room for the annuums!
