CaneDog 2020

2020 is underway, so it's time to start the new season's glog!  Odd times though, as I'm still harvesting stragglers from last season while the earliest of my 2020 starts are already up.  Grow areas are a bit disorganized as a result

This season's grow should be a little more balanced than last season, though I'll still have a ridiculous number of rocotos - many OW's plus a bunch of new varieties - and quite a few carry-over OW wilds, too.

A big "thanks" to all who shared seeds with me for this season.  I'm appreciative and excited to have lots of cool varieties in the mix, many of which I got to watch you grow last season and can now try myself.  I think I'm current with everyone, but if by any chance you were expecting seeds from me that may have slipped through the cracks just shoot me a PM.

As I mentioned, things aren't super organized right now, but here's a few pics anyway.

I planted a few seeds early, just because I couldn't hold off the extra few weeks without planting something.

Amarillo de Arequipa Rocoto just popped- Thanks CTB!

Ecuador Sweet Rocoto twins - and a big shout out to the two peeps who sent me seeds for these. Both sources germinated and I'm really happy to have them growing.  Disclaimer: they may look overly wet, but these just got sprayed (to avoid HH's) and it's a very porous medium.

Put another few rocotos in to soak today.

This is a galapagoense that popped a few days back, exactly 100 days after sowing.

And this pod contains Jalapeno Zapotec x Purple Jalapeno F1, one of a couple F1 JZ crosses I'll be growing out this season. The other is Tekne Dolmasi x JZ.

Finally, I got a solid recommendation on a new media mix I'll be trying out this season in a few variations. The mix is heavy in partially composted bark fines, a fir/hemlock mix as pine's hard to get locally. It's proving to be a veritable mycelium factory.  Bodes well for good symbiosis with the appropriate fungal species this year.

Heck, they're even fruiting out the drainage holes...  :)

That's it for now.  Good luck to all in 2020!

Yep.  It definitely helps during the transition season.   I recently moved the majority of my new wave of rocotos from T5HO's into southern exposure and after several cold crappy days it's warm and super sunny today.  Even set back from the window, some of them are going limp from the change in conditions.  Tough here with the big swings in weather.  I had cold temps, wind and hail yesterday, but it's almost like summer outside today.

I can't imagine what your rocotos will look like with a couple-weeks' head start on last year.  Hope it means more pods will ripen for you by the end of the season.

The manzano rojos grew massive and didn't ripen on the plant due to growing in 8 gal containers - still, they had plenty of heat and taste and I used them in salsa which I am still eating. But I had to do those 8 gal grows since I couldn't hook up my drip irrigation due to construction of the new deck and only had time to water once per week. This year, since the deck is finished, back to my old strategy: I'm hooking up the drip irrigation and doing 3 gal grows. Might have to come up with a different flip-over protection strategy now, though, as this place has become severely windy on a very frequent basis.

Hope your weather stabilises soon. Ours sure hasn't.

Great pics CD! That Thai Spaz is loading up!

Thanks Devv.  Good to see you active on the boards again - your PaulG crosses are looking great!  What timing, huh?  You don't have to go to work any longer and now they tell you you have to stay at home    Hope things are good!

All's good here, week 4 of hiding....sigh...one good thing is we were well stocked before hand. That and we can purchase from the grocery store online, drive, pop the trunk, and go home.

If I was still employed I would be required to come in; I was the IT Director, and all Admin's and Directors have to report. School is closed and they have all teachers and hourly staying home. LB and I got a chuckle the other day seeing the usually desk bound Transportation Director on the lawn tractor doing some mowing. I would have taken a pic of him actually working, but that would have been too obvious

Seems like you'll be up to your neck in pods from that Thai Spaz! Any plans for them?

You know, I'm not exactly sure yet. This is my first time growing them and I haven't even tasted one yet.  I expect I'll use them for stir frying or similar and dry them, too.  I have 2 plants growing and just dropped more seeds 'cause I know some people locally who want  plants and for at least one of them I think these would be a good fit.

In the original thread, it says they came from a butcher, Mr. Spezzano, who used them in making sausage - http://thehotpepper.com/topic/58921-thai-hot-seeds-thanks-to-mr-spezzano-spezzanos-market/?hl=spezzano.  The name given is "Thai Hot - Spezzano," in recognition, but it's easier for me to just write Spaz or Thai Spaz as shorthand.  I didn't get them directly from Big Mike, but a big shout out to Big Mike for being the original source and sharing these.  And, of course, a shout out to Wiri WIri for the hookup!

Pretty cool! I wasn't expecting pods that big when I saw how many flowers you have on your plant. If they were used for sausage, and were able to hold up their flavor, I bet they'll be pretty versatile in the kitchen.

Finally caught up on everything in your grow CaneDog and it never lets me down. Wonderful pics as always and enjoying all the variety you have in your grow.

Many thanks for the good words, simp.    Four, to be exact!    :)

One has to be patient waiting for posts to actually
upload sometimes. Every time I hit the button again,
I get repeated posts.

But that comment was worth four repeats

Bookers, your plants have been doing great.  And it looks like you managed to dodge any set-back from the aphids - at least I hope that's right.  I'm getting pretty excited about plant-out as it's  not all that far away now.

I put out another round of rocotos today, but they'll be coming in every night for the foreseeable future.  I had to stake most of them, as they're a bit weak from sitting in the window for the last week or so and it's been pretty gusty outside, lately.

Yes sir they are! I was just remembering the over protective actions I was doing when my ow plants were stressed and I thought I had bugs lol. You saw the stress factors and the neem OD I administered lol... you've showed me to be patient... I'll admit I did go commando-terminator-killem- ask questions later the other day but I knew I had to wait 2 weeks after the neem shower. Its just the little things and I felt like you kinda took me under your wing and stuck with me. Thanks man.
