Carolina Reaper (HP22B) Community Grow

A few members including myself are growing seeds for this variety ASAP. I and a few others here on THP thought it would be fun to have a "community glog" strictly for this variety, a fun thread about the HP22B and growing this pepper for the first time.

I think we should start a community glog like this anytime there is a new pepper with alot of attention and alot of people growing it, possible world record holder or not. It would be fun, and this should be fun! That's why we all love this hobby is it not?

Therefore, this will be a drama-free, controversy-free, fun glog for all of us growers and others to enjoy. If you grow, please chime in. If you're growing this variety, please post pictures and chime in about your observations.

Again.. This thread is ment to be fun and informative, but mostly fun :)
Please. Pretty please with sugar on top.. lol. Keep it drama-free.
I, and many others would really appreciate this thread to stay that way.

Now lets get to growing!

I went with the paper towel method for this guy just like I have with all my mid-season starts. It is far from my favorite way to germinate seeds but I'm in no hurry this time of year which is why I went this route. I've had the seeds in the paper towel for about a week now on top of my HOT5 lighting closet. The seeds should be showing root tips soon, then they will be visiting some real soil :D

How's it going for everyone else?

3 weeks in, looks like the ones in coco are taking off faster than the dwc.

I was getting a little algea on the top of the coco so I put a layer of hydroton on top to stop it.

When did you put the plants into the dwc? Mine is three weeks old and still not showing roots from the rockwool.

Also, the dont even have true leaves yet. I find it hard to believe they grow this slowly.

I put it in dwc when the root coming out the bottom of the rapid rooter was about a inch long. I'm not sure if it had true leaves at the time.

I'm proud to report that I'm the papa of two Carolina Reaper seedlings. I was beginning to lose hope with these guys, and wondering if the seeds were ever gonna sprout. They're way too small for pics just yet, but once I get them outta the styrofoam cups and into the rootbags, I'll post pics :)

Little update: I now have 4 Reaper sprouts as of when I left last evening for my Disney trip. If my luck holds, I might just have a couple more. I'm also going to try and get a DWC in the next two weeks and transplant them into it & see how it goes :)

What are these growing in

Only reason i ask, mine are over a month old and barely growing, so trying to figure what you have done ot make them grow so damn fast.

They are in Readygro moisture coco coir and I added Mykos mycorrihizal in layers. I put a layer of clay pellets on top of the coco to stop a little algae I was seeing start on the perlite. I am actually amazed they are growing so much faster in the coco than the dwc.

There are no nutes in this medium so I am feeding them sensi grow and cal mag.

Thanks, yea, i got mine in soil and they growing slower than dokney balls, but evenutally they will be going out side in soil containers. I do have some mycro and stuff, so maybe i will go through and add it. it could be cause i am using recycle potting soil.

Do you ahve them under a MH light, or just a flouro

I'm using a 4ft 8 tube solarflare T5 for light, it puts out 760 watts. I have both red and blue bulbs installed.

I would add the mycro, and maybe look into something like liquid karma to add if you don't mind spending a little $.

lock203, those a looking nice. Are you in Illinois? I will be adding to this log sometime in December. Some very nice
member here gave me some reaper seeds. :woohoo:

Thanks roper, yes I'm in Illinois. With a little more luck I should have some pods to send out to members during the winter.

Wow I'm enthused again. My seedlings were a flop so far so slapped a tray of my seeds left into promix and the heating mat an hour ago.
Ill post again when i see action. For those who were successful, did you have yours on a heat mat or under lights. I'm looking for magic combo to get these sprouted.

Nice, I am going to run you down now, going to try something new and do a reaper indoors and see how hard i can push it.

I would love to try one.
No problem, I don't have the best memory so you will more than likely have to remind me when they are ready. If the Cards win it all I will send you 12 to celebrate 12 in 12.

Nice, once you see what you can do to plants with liquid nutes & additives it's tough to go back to soil.

Seems my little excursion to Disney this weekend did the trick :) My official count is 6 Reapers, and a possible 7th seedling popped up between last Thursday and when I came back today. I think they should definitely be ready for a DWC by the time I pull the trigger on getting it :)

1 month old, these guys really started to grow in the last week, especially the ones in coco.

The one on the right is really taking off.

The dwc looks healthy just not growing as fast as the ones coco.

4 weeks from seed? Very nice plants! The coco is going to have more air in the rootzone and less compaction than soil so they will cruise along. Should be able to keep plants in a smaller container too. DWC eventually will pass up the coco if taken care of properly. It takes alittle longer for them initially. I have a single bubbler and played around with it a bit. Too much hassle for my schedule. How big is your grow area? Some of these newer super hot chinese plants get gigantic.
